Can anybody recommend some good music, soundtracks etc to run in the background whilst DMing Eberron ?

Dead Can Dance
Vangelis (esp. the score for Blade Runner)
Arvo Part (or versions of his stuff by William Orbit, esp. "Fratres")
The Changelings
Marilyn Manson (the instrumentals, like Resident Evil)
Enya (instrumental and non-lyrical vocal)
Brian Eno
Kronos Quartet
Hafler Trio
Gavin Bryars (the "Sinking of the Titanic" CD is incredibly atmospheric)
The Glove (the instrumentals from the "Blue Sunshine" CD)

For especially dark and Xoriat-flavoured scenarios/adventures, we use...

Diamanda Galas (parts of "Masque of the Red Death" and "Vena Cava" CDs)
Coph Nia (their earlier stuff - very tough to find nowadays)

Handle the above two with care, however - some players may find it too dark for their liking. I use them very sparingly, and they've always contributed to making a very memorable session for my players ;)

08-25-05, 02:08 AM Well, i'd hate to reveal my loser cd collection :D , but here are some i think fit well.
-Episode iii soundtrack, it's got some creepy stuff (particularily good if someones going to betray the party ;) )
-The return of the king soundtrack
-Matrix Revolutions soundtrack

08-25-05, 09:08 AM I'm currently using the Waterworld sountrack for some of the set pieces in Whispers of the Vampire's Blade. There's a few tracks in there that are great for swashbuckling battles. Also the first track in the album is also good for when the PCs look upon Xen'drik for the first time.

08-25-05, 09:28 AM Right before a fight I like to switch out to somthing heavy and turn it up a bit the players cringe(sp?) when they hear "Let The Body's Hit The Floor" and the changeling thief always rolls better for some wierd reason when "I Stand Alone" is playing. during non combat we listen to tons of stuff just turned down lower i find volume has as much of an impact as tone.

obviously pirates of the caribbean (amazing swashbuckling scenes with "skull and crossbones")
arcanum ost for a desperate sharn
angels of venice
warcraft (3 and wow), if you ever want to put war in the campaign
midnight sindacate (official dnd ost, very very dark)
the 3 lotr
willow
solaris ost
kingdom of heaven ost
dungeon keeper , diablo 2,
grandia 2, legend of dragoon and vagrant story

those are probably the soundtracks i use more frequently in my campaign, i hope youll like them

For example, a real-world flautist picks up a Karrnathi flute and tries to play her scales. Is she likely to cringe at the 15-step chromatic scale instead of the 12-step one she's used to?

Basil Pouldaris. Conan soundtrack. Crom would approve.

City

Depending on the city, Celtic might be pretty cool. Clannad or some acoustic Chieftain jams could be cool.

08-25-05, 04:53 PM I find the Eberron Soundtrack CD usefull when i just need background music. I'm not in the thing for dark music, i let my story telling do the job. But if i want to run a Pulp-Noir session in the darker places of Sharn, i like to use something dark, classical is perfekt for this. my favorites:

1. Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata
2. Mozart - Requiem (carefull with this one. Hardcore classic. catholic church music.)
3. any kind of pipe organ music.
4. Enya - In memory of trees.

thats some dark musik that i use, i don't have that much

The scales themselves are largely irrelevant in this case, whats more important for the soundof music is the rythmn. Listen to some late 16th, earily 17th century pieces. They all sound imcomplete when the piece is over, its almost jarring since its not longer common to end a piece of music using the rythmn and patterns that were common during that time period.

08-30-05, 01:12 PM cowboy bebop would be good if you want to add a jazzy feel to game, makes great chase music. The samurai Champloo stuff is pretty good for keeping the pace going while walking around.

Aphex twin Slected ambient works vol 2 has some of the best creepy dungeon music find a track that you like and loop it lower the lights makes for great ambiance

there was a program called dm soundboard that you could set up music or soundeffect to specific buttons.

but as of where to get it i'm not sure i would use sound fx though unless theres a newer edition.. if you can use whatever player program you use.
Make playlists and if you got a specific song just pick it from the playlist.
