| Uller99906-06-05, 12:30 PM | I'm not sure if this type of thing has been covered but I was wondering about something. I wanted to create a more obvious separation between people from nations but I don't want to unbalance anything. For example, since all Karrnathi have to attend military service and military service in Karrnathi is important to the culture, would be too much to say that most Karrns have one level of warrior? Or perhaps one combat oriented feat instead of what ever feet they normally would have had? Obviosuly it'd be a bit unbalancing to have every Karrnathi be a warrior but from I know of modern politics two years of military service can give you quite a perspective on several aspects of combat not the least of which is knowing how to handle a rifle if in need so how might one represent this? I mean certainly the average Karrn would be a bit better in a scrap than the average Aundairan. Also besides the thing with Valenar elves having different weapon proficiencies, is there anything that, balance wise, could be done about racial hatreds in Gnomes and Dwarves? I don't think it would make much sense for a dwarf from Aundair to hate Orcs or Goblinoids enough to get a bonus but I don't want to create a host of rules to amend that for each country. Would it be balanced do you guys think to emphasize some other Dwarven racial feature to make up for this? What if non-Mror dwarves getting +3 to appraise and craft and maybe stone cunning instead of the +1 to attack Orcs and Goblinoids or giving gnome an extra illusion spell to cast instead of the Goblinoid bonus? Anyway any advice and this would be cool. Elves are easy and ultimately the human thing isn't going to matter overly much but Dwarves and gnome are something of a concern for me so what do you guys think any of those case? |

I wanted to create a more obvious seperation between people from nations but I don't want to unbalance anything. For example, since all Karnathi have to attend military service and military service in Karrnath is important to the culture, would be too much to say that most Karrns have one level of warrior? or perhaps one combat oriented feat instead of what ever feet they normally would have had? I don't think it'd be a good idea to give "most" Karrns a warrior level. A few reasons: 1) It artificially weights the Karrns towards "higher level," when Joe Short-order Cook is a War1/Com1. 2) Mandatory military service is one thing; having combat duty is something else. You might end up as a supply clerk (Expert), "mechanic" (Magewright), or run supply routes as a "driver," or a cook (Commoner). 3) Feats are in such short supply, that it'd be pretty lame to require that Bill the Karrnathi Diplomatic Aide (Expert 1) needed to pick Mounted Combat instead of Skill Focus: Diplomacy (or Gather Info or whatever). I think you'd probably do better just to require all players to come up with a "What I did for my mandatory military service, or how I escaped mandatory military service" background footnote. If you really need it, give out a freebie skill point or two for an appropriate military skill (Profession: Soldier). I won't really speak to the Dwarf/Gnome thing, because I don't recall the specific details and the laundry list of possible replacements. On some level, I don't really think losing the +1 hit/damage that they get is a major loss in the big picture. Sure, the number crunchers may complain, but really...If you're not fighting goblinoids or giants, who cares? Especially considering that goblinoids aren't the evil expendable stormtrooper minions they are in other settings ("Goblinoids are people, too! Thronehold sez so!"), it's not as useful as it might be elsewhere (...where you can practically guarantee hacking on gobbos for your first few levels). If you really must, yeah, maybe grant an extra skill point or two to "appropriate" regional skills. Zil gnomes might all get an extra point in Gather Info, thanks to the "Big Little Brother" environment. Give Dwarves another freebie skill point into a Craft or Profession skill, maybe, being the industrious types they are. |
