Whats up thread members!! I need some advice on campaign idea i trying to put toghther. I'm a little new to the Eberron setting, so some seasoned vets of the settings please feel free to add your input. The campaign takes place on the Bitter Sea in Eberron. I have gathered various sea adventures from modules, dungeon, and online sources. Where I'm stuck is what should be the theme for the overall campaign (i.e stopping pirate raids, looking for lost treasure etc.) My overall vision of the campaign is to have it run various adventures like the Age of Worms or Shackled City.

Thnx

Wandering refugees seek happiness and a new home; that can be good.
Set it during the Last War and you have instant motivations.
Perhaps a crewman (or PC) is carrying a MacGuffin that is sought by the Emerald Claw, gnomes of Zilargo, the Aurum, etc.

How about your part is searching for a missing person from the last war. You could run a huge scavenger hunt campaign giving them clues of the missing persons where abouts and sending them on adventures.

Thnx!! D-001 for the suggestion, should the missing person be dragonmarked or someone with high influence in a particular region?

I was thinking along the lines of a lost prince of cyre maybe, one that could possibly change Khorvaire again, or maybe a member of house cannith that may know what happened on the day of mourning and went into hiding after the disaster struck. Maybe the PC's are sent out to silence him so that he dosent tell anyone of house cannith's involvement in the disaster, or depending on how you run the campaign house cannith didnt do it but the man the PC's are searching for knows who did and is hiding from that person(s) and the PC's are searching for him to find some truth in the day of mourning. If you want to know anything else you can email me at Lunchboxreturns@yahoo.com Thx for considering my idea.

A MacGuffin is just that ... an item that people want; it doesn't matter why, or how much it's worth, or if it even does anything at all. It's a plot device, and nothing more.

The "Maltese Falcon" was a MacGuffin.

The Schema and Patterns are MacGuffins.

It's whatever you want it to be.

I believe that Alfred Hitchcock coined that word, but I'm not sure.

Indeed, the MacGuffin is the item of interest to the plot.

If your characters have a key component of a creation forge, they have something that the Lord of Blades and Merrix d'Cannith will pursue them and connive and scheme to get.
If they have the medallion showing the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant, they have a MacGuffin the Nazis and Americans want. If it gives the resting place of the black dragon who founded the Gatekeepers or an important dimensional seal, then druids and aberrations may chase them.
If they have 'proof' that the King of Q'Barra is directly descended from King Jarot, then Q'Barrans and most intelligence agencies of the Five Nations will chase them.
If you've got a device to recreate the Mourning, everyone wants it or wants it sunk to the bottom of the sea...
If you're the world's only bearer of an aberrant mark with Siberys-level power, you are the MacGuffin. Quite frankly, a dragonmark that causes plagues, earthquakes, meteor storms or oversize flame strikes will draw huge attention. And if you've got the Mark of Death, the Emerald Claw, the Chamber, the dragons, the Twelve, Houses Phiarlan, Thuranni, Blood of Vol, and Matt Forbeck will all follow you to the ends of the earth.
In more of a niche-power mode, if your machine can transfer a dragonmark to another person, that'll draw huge amounts of attention.

Thnx for the input fellas. I'll have to really think about how to incorporate the MacGuffin into an overall campaign as a series of adventures (i.e Age of Worms), and what impact the grand finale will have on the world of Eberron.
