Need Help with a Strange Player Request [Archive] - Wizards Community

Ok, the backstory to this request: My group has a tradition (from way back in 1st edition I believe, way before I joined the group. It has adapted over the editions though) where at each character level, a player gets a single "Divine Intervention": It is a 1% chance (rolled on a d%) where if I roll the players chosen number, their request is granted. It's primary purpose is for life or death related matters (Ie, avoiding a blow/spell that would reduce the to -10 or more). However, when players are about to level up (and thus lose their current levels DI) they often spend their DI on a silly request. The "rule" is that the request can't have any major impact on the game or setting and it follows the same restrictions as a wish spell (that is assuming they get their 1%). So no matter what they request, the DM has full reign to twist it as far as they want. DIs, are by their nature, meta-game and/or OOC type requests rather then IC. Also, a DM has every right (and generally will) say no to requests they don't like.

Now, to the request: My groups warforged warblade, who goes by the name Jayne (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jayne_Cobb), asked for a town somewhere that treats him like a hero and is called "Jaynestown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaynestown)." Well, he actually succeeded on the roll and it is now my problem to find out where to put it XD

Any good ideas where to put it? The town is going to be have a bunch of semi-slave/peasant type workers who work in the mud all day. They'll also have a ruler/leader/slavemaster who is the only one who profits from their work (a good plot hook in the future if I need one).

You should try to work the events that lead to him gaining the heo worship to fit to the Song about him. Every one talks of Bards sining of the Heroes deeds heres a chanse to show it.

Either:

Q'barra: jungle, lots of rain and mud, possibly among the lizardfolk.
New Cyre: It may not be muddy, but it's poor and needs heros.
Shadow Marches: go with Wymarc's suggestion of dragonshards.
Droaam: add "insult" to injury, and have Jayne made a hero by kobolds.

Here are my current idea from the suggestions so far: (note, why it is called Jaynestown will have to be figured out after talking to the player in question).

Jaynestown, Shadow Marches
The town of Jaynestown is a small encampment on the western part of the Crawling Swamp area of the Shadow Marches. It is placed on top of one of the richest Eberron Dragonshard deposits not controlled by by House Tharashk. This in part due to a modified Private Sanctum spell placed over the area (it blocks scrying but and certain message type spells but not vision). Jaynestown (formally called Shurakan 'tah) is controlled by the Zuruash orc tribe. This tribe was an old enemy of one of the clans that eventually formed House Tharashk. They have over the last few months (years?) been attacking and capturing ships that travel along the western coast. They primarily do this for the supplies but they also conscript the crew and passengers of the ships as slave labor for their Dragonshard operations.

Droaam: add "insult" to injury, and have Jayne made a hero by kobolds.

XD thats an awesome idea. Expecially since there is a kobold in the party :) I'll have to work on that idea. *researches area*

Gotta be the Shadow Marches IMO.

I don't suppose your group fly around in the battered Airship? Captained by an ex-sergeant from Cyre whose battalion was decimated in an infamous valley during the Last War?

Just wondering... ;)

Not yet anyway although my group is new to Eberron and I'm not sure if i've told them about how the setting has Airships yet :) Since I am currently running them through the forgotten forge => Shadows of the Last war => Vampires Blade => Grasp of the Emerald Claw adventure line, I fully expect them to steal/borrow/"find" an airship at some point :)

EDIT: Hmm.... On that thought: Airships normally require an opposed charisma check to operate. However, a ship equipped with a Wheel of Wind and Water piloted by someone with the Mark of Storms can be piloted without the checks. Would it be possible to Jury-rig one so that someone with, say, the Mark of Passage could pilot it? Not as well, of course, as someone with the mark of storms but better then just a normal opposed charisma checks. I mainly ask this because none of the party is particularly Charismatic but we DO have someone with the mark of passage (plans on going into the blade of orien PrC).

Thats actually been discussed, and the only thing stopping Orien from using Airships is pretty much exactly that. I'm not sure where that thread went, but some digging would expose it, and if I recall correctly, the Hellcow himself posted on the matter.

Short answer: no. But why not just hire a pilot with good charisma?

If the character is a warforged you could also place it in Thrane or Karnath, as the warforged there are still enslaved (indentured servants) and he would make a great hero there.

What if he must help someone found a new city. A group of ex-cyran (or to make something different what about a group of humanoids trying to leave droam/darguun?) want to found a new city somewhere (droam, xen'drik, q'barra, the demon wastes even) to start a new life and hire them to escort them and help deal with eventual locals

... you know, that's probably why Wash would be able to pilot an airship in Eberron. He has pretty damn high charisma to be able to tell jokes like that and not get punched (excepting Jayne.)

That said... did Jayne become a hero here becuase he dumped a crate of Eberron shards that he was attempting to steal off the back of an airship so he could get away?

I would think that would be the case but 1) I haven't had a chance to discuss it with the player yet and 2) The character in question is somewhere in the Lawful Good to Lawful Neutral spectrum.

in vampires blade they will have a chance at an airship almost right at the beginning of the adventure if they're fast enough and fight quickly.

Generally, noone beside a Lyrandar Heir can fly an airship reliably for a longer time. Of course, if you want to take the parallels further, Serenity isn't exactly reliable either, especially with the primary buffer panel coming off...

First off, does it have to be because of something that particular character did?

He's a Warforged. Its quite possible that there are other warforged from the same production run who look identical to him running around. I believe that the symbols on their foreheads are always unique, but what if the symbol in the statue of the town's benefacter has eroded or chipped to the point where it looks the same as Jayne's.

Why did Jayne take the name he did? Is it likely that another warforged who served in the same unit and had similar experiences would have picked the same when they were freed and had to choose a name?

If Jayne is generally good, make it a group of Lawful Evil Kobolds, who venerate their benefacter for wiping out the peaceful community of gnomes who used to live in their mine. (He was only after repair materials, and left all of those useless soft metal discs and shiny rocks lying around where he dumped them.)
Have them lavish increasingly disturbing praises of the details of the massacre on him whilst in front of the rest of the party.
Have some Trust agents amongst the gnome slaves try to take revenge on him. And pass news of his presence back to Zil reinforcements moving in on the mine right now.
Have the original Jayne be released from where the scheming Kobold sorceror/priest (who has been keeping all the 'tribute' the kobolds dedicate to Jayne) secretly keeps him entombed, even more psychotic than when he started.
Have the loyal little Kobolds jump in front of the PC Jayne to take the disintegrate meant for him.

Let the PC Jayne duke it out with his killer namesake whilst the other PCs work furiously to prevent the flood/rockfalls/lava flows created by the gnomes as they escape from reaching the kobold hatching grounds. Fighting off the undead minions of the Sorceror priest who sees then as a threat to his position all the way.

Any thoughts?

I like it. Very 'wish gone wrong' style, with a good adventure tied in. Very nice.

Ooh... I really like it. It makes it even more interesting since there is a kobold in the party :) (He's chaotic good though). So would it be in Zilargo then? Probably in the Seastone Mountains?
