RavenGraygem 01-26-07, 02:36 AM	I recently scared up some cash, and I'm looking at the following three books: Ghostwalk (I realize it doesn't belong here, but why make two threads on the same subject.) Magic of Eberron Races of Eberron I like Eberron on it's own and bought the Eberron Campaign Setting, but I'm mainly looking to cannabalize material for my generic campaign. Now, I'm buying Ghostwalk, since the premise intrigues me and it's dirt cheap ($5 and change), and I feel it's better to have a book and not like, than not have it and go nuts wondering what I'm missing out on :D . That leaves enough cash for one more book. RoE obviously has information on the warforged, but how good is this info and how adaptable is it to generic settings? Are there any "must-have" feats, items, spells, and such for warforged in it? MoE would presumably have information on artificers and elemental binding (big parts of the magic scene in Eberron after all), but what goodies lie inside? Are the psionic artificer and "psiforged" I heard about inside? I'd like as much info about each one as I can get without infringing on any copyright information. Of course, if anyone has these books for $10 or less (including shipping and not involving eBay), I'll definitely be willing to buy.
mhacdebhandia 01-26-07, 04:19 AM	If you're planning to use these books for a generic campaign, Races of Eberron is the most useful choice. Its flavour is all Eberron-specific, but I think that its feats and whatnot are more useful to a different setting which uses the Eberron races than most of the material in Magic of Eberron.
Darakhoranon 01-26-07, 09:01 AM	I canīt really talk from experience (I usually prefer generic books and thus have neither), but from what Iīve read on these boards, RoE is... a bit hard to swallow... While itīs tailored for what you seem to plan -"borrowing" things from Eberron - it contradicts practically every other published source. Iīd go with MoE. Apart from the fact that I enjoy reading about new ways to blast those poor paladins (Yes, I AM evil.:devil:), ignoring or even changing the background of some item/spell/whatever is usually easier and more fun than having to choose between two versions of the same thing without getting anything new.

Since he's not planning on actually playing in Eberron but instead taking bits and pieces from it for his own setting why is that a big deal? I think for that purpose RoE is an excellent book. It gives you some very good (imho) writeups of the backgrounds for the new races as well as going over the way the classic races are. I don't have my book in front of me so i can't comment on specific stuff but overall i think it makes an excellent 'Races" book, perhaps not the best "Eberron" book

I see it as a case of two or more sages working on the same project, not having the slightest darn idea what anyone else is writing, and then having all of that erroneous, contradictory, and just plain biased information printed by someone who cares more about page count than what's actually on the pages :D . (A great example I've seen in fantasy literature is the preface for the three books of David Eddings' Tamuli trilogy. Each was written as a chapter for a "historical" document examining the events of the trilogy in general and that book in particular, and the author of each particular "chapter" is definitely biased, both concerning the events themselves and the other authors.) But back to the matter at hand, I've got two in favor of RoE and one for MoE. Now I plan to get both eventually, I'm just trying to figure out which one comes first (money's tight, so I really have to plan ahead for each purchase, ambushing bills in the night and robbing pennies from them :P .) I read a sample of RoE, which just happened to contain the first few pages of the warforged entry (oh frabulous joy!) and I definitely liked what I saw, including a section that hit home; warforged in generic settings. Sure, it was just a sidebar, but that's the kind of stuff I want to know. So unless MoE has the artificer and psionic stuff (particularly that psiforged I keep hearing about) I crave, I think I'll go with RoE to start.

Psiforged and Half-Daelkyr characters. Psionic Artificers. More Artificer geared feats. More Infusions and spells. More Magic items, including elemental grafts (Woo! I can move through earth like an earth elemental!) and artificer focused magic items (Spare hand, ring of master artifice, and cannith goggles). A new type of magic item (Minor schema - kinda like a 1/day scroll). They're both good. :D
Darakhoranon 01-29-07, 07:36 AM	Well, since you donīt really care about contradictions (same as me), it boils down to what you prefer: Fluff or crunch. For fluff, I suggest RoE, since the Races series offers quite a lot of that. For crunch, MoE would be better.
