I am starting a new campaign soon and would like some ideas.

One of the things that I am concerned about is if I should make any changes to the setting. If I have run a 10 month campaign that results in the healing of the mournland and WotC buts out a book of Mournland dangers what am I supposed to do?

If any of you have any ideas for a campaign that will not permanently change the setting I would greatly appreciate it.

Stick with your story, and ignore the book. Honestly, I am one of those people that like to stick as close to the "official" storyline as possible, but if you shackle yourself exclusively to what's published, you're reading a novel not roleplaying. ;)

The truth is, in the ECS there are dozens, if not hundreds of plot ideas, and there are published modules that can be used, but none of these means anything if a DM doesn't bring it to life. The only thing that I would recommend avoiding at all costs is running a story and at some point saying, "Okay... remember when we did this... well, it didn't happen that way."

What I would suggest (and this is something that I read here... so I'm not trying to take credit for this) is to work backwards on your plot.

Determine what you want to ultimately happen. Since you brought it up, let's say that you want the group to restore the Mournland. Start out with the assumption that they did it... Huzzah! Now, what challenge did they have to finally overcome to do that? Once you have that, how did they get to that point? Keep working backwards until you have an outline in place. And don't forget to add twists and options along the way.

Just some random thoughts.

1) A clan of Frost Giants has found an artifact up in the ice of Frostfell (Call it the Icy Orb of Ir'Lotari for now), and has pressed together groups of monsters to invade Aundaira. They have built up an impressive little empire, with ports in the Demon Wastes and in the Isles north of the Wastes. Their goal is to find a companion artifact (Call it the Firey Orb of Ir'Lotari) which was kept seperate from that orb, forgotten by House Kundarak in a vault under the the Seawall Mountains, which is where, of course, you start your adventure.

... oh, heck, I could come up with more, but with a start like that, do you really need any more?

Only one slight problem. The Seawall is kinda the place where the ECS put the bulk of the Dhakaani remnant, I can't see Kundarak having a facility there without exposing the secret hiding place of the remnants of the empire. Just a thought.

Make them a cell of gnomes that are members of the Trust. Everything they do has to be on the quiet; setting up an acceptable alternate explanation is part of the job.

So you get changes made (people/monsters who were dangerous to the Trust eliminated), without any public change at all. Some dragonmarked heir tragically choked on an asparagus stalk.

My take is similar to what DragonWatcher implied. I love Eberron and have most of the books, but if published material doesn't fit with my idea, I don't use it. There is a distinct difference between canon material on these boards and canon for the game you run. If you ask a question here, canon material will be referenced, interpreted, argued over, etc. But what is canon for your individual campaign is what you make canon. WoTC creates a book on Mournland challenges/encounters/etc that doesn't fit with what you want to do? It happened your way, not theirs.

To sum up, D&D is not dependant on strict adherence to published material to be enjoyable. Take what you like, ignore what you don't, and run with it.

Now, had I said this on the Forgotten Realms boards, I'd have a mob of torch waving fanatics at my door in minutes. ;)

Don't deny it. You know it'd happen.

As for ideas...hmmm...

Morgrave University suffers from a rash of brutal murders, each victim connected to a recent deal with the Twelve for an expedition to Xen'drik. Evidence is "lost", burials are rushed, and no follow up is made to explain why each of the victim's brains had literally been liquified.

And what if it was the Aurum who put it there?

Interesting place to hide just such an artefact pretty much in plain sight of the people who would be looking for it if they knew...

And then there's the possibility thats just what they want them to think...
lead these giants there and open things up so they can retrieve their cold artefact for their own purposes...
