| DragonWatcher08-30-06, 11:30 AM | I would seriously consider telling player 2 that you won't be allowing him to play an evil character (by his actions, regardless of his alignment). While I have no problem with evil characters in a good party in general, if the player plays every evil character as a single-minded, backstabbing, baby-killer this is only going to derail your efforts at some point. If most of the characters want to be heroes, then they should all be heroes. This (imo) doesn't prevent a well-played evil character with good intentions (but still willing to "break a few eggs" for the greater good) from being in the group, but it does prevent assassins who just want to kill stuff, from being played by a player who has already displayed a penchant for backstabbing the group. Ultimately, though... it's your call. |
| Wolfwood208-30-06, 11:30 AM | I spoke with my group (whom I had been playing with not DMing) and told them I'd like to run an Eberron Campaign. Looks like there will be five players most likely. Four of which will show up every week. Player 1 - Human Artificer (Favored of House, Least Dragonmark) of House Cannith. Player 2 - Changeling Rogue (planning on going assassin route) Player 3 - Shifter, class undecided Player 4 - Warforged, class undecided Player 5 - Completely undecided I'd suggest you tell the player of the Changeling Rogue that evil is fine, but loyalty to the other PCs is a must. This is Eberron after all, where good people and evil people may frequently end up fighting for the same causes, with only their methods differing. As for setting up the campaign, my suggestion is to make up a short list of ideas, perhaps with a few explanatory sentences, and let the players vote on which one they like best. Some ideas: A sea-going campaign where they fight off pirates and competitors. Working as agents for the government of one of the Four Nations. They could be swashbuckling wand-slingers for Aundair, grim inspectors for Karnath, inquistive priests for Thrane, or hired detectives for Breland. Army special operations squad from Cyre, left homeless in the wake of the Last War. Explorers working to find old and lost knowledge. |

| Thwyvylyn08-30-06, 02:15 PM | IMHO player 2 is an attention hog and probably will continue to be a general pain the neck. Backstabbing the party in my games results in an instant perma-ban from any games I run. I generally also warn as many other people as I can. Those kinds of actions should never be tolerated. |

| Xorial08-30-06, 02:37 PM | I find that in Eberron, it is very helpful to have a Sponser for the group. Like a Chronicle or Morgrave University. It can even be a private person that needs "things" taken care of. The point is that you can make an apprpriate sponser that can help motivate your campaign along. |
| Wolfwood208-30-06, 02:37 PM | Well the campaign I was running was an evil drow elf campaign in the Forgotten Realms. I really couldn't punish someone for acting like a drow normally would. Whyever not? The player is the one making all the decisions. He's the one who chose to make a PC that would act in a way that would disrupt the game. "I'm just playing my character," is never an excuse. But we're getting all distracted by this one guy. Tell me about your campaign in general. What ideas did you have for it? Are there any villains you particularly want to use? |

| Myrddin Wyllt08-30-06, 04:01 PM | I'll probably have House Cannith sponsor the group since this character fits into that pretty easily. In that case, here's a suggestion: Start them out in Sharn, using the module(s) you already have. When that dries up, or the players refuse to take the plot hooks, you could: Send them into monster territories (like Darguun) to transport important supplies to their outlying houses. Many "random" encounters ensue. Send them into the Mournlands in search of Cannith forge parts, lost artifacts, holy relics, etc. Send them to Xen'drik for warforged components, proof of giants building warforged before Khorvaire did, or just artifacts of the Giant-Dragon wars. Send them to the Lhazaar Principalities to search for "buried treasure" left behind during wartime maritime piracy. Send them to the Demon Wastes to stop a cultist of the Dragon Below from completing a great ceremony (and accompanying eldritch machine) from opening a seal and releasing a Rakshasa. Send them to Karrnath to steal necromantic "magi-technology" from their state mages and bring it back, to be reverse engineered and sold back to the Karrns at a discount. Send them to Droaam to fight followers of the Sisters and recover stolen Cannith property (perhaps a set of Schema for making a new Warforged Forge). Send them back to the Mournlands to stop the Lord of Blades from finishing the Forge he bought the Schema from the Sisters to build. I did that just by looking at the TOC of the Campaign Setting book. Let your imagination soar, and everyone will follow you. |

| manneedshaircut08-30-06, 05:29 PM | Tangent Warning! Send them to Xen'drik for warforged components, proof of giants building warforged before Khorvaire did, or just artifacts of the Giant-Dragon wars. But remember, as per Secrets of Xen'drik, the Quori built the first warforged! Even though it makes absolutely no sense for a race of dream beings to have a dreamless servitor race. (grumble, grumble).[/rant] Anyways, Forgotten Forge is a great adventure to start the group out on, especially if you want House Cannith to be their sponsor. Even if you don't follow the adventure path, Lady Elaydren is a good NPC and makes a great sponsor for low level parties, especially if you want to get into the subterranean warfare surrounding the House Cannith split. After all, she is a member of Cannith West working for Cannith South. Another direction you could take it in has already been suggested, that is, a quest into the mournlands to search former Cannith enclaves for schema etc left behind. This could turn into a Lord of Blades fighting campaign, or it could also turn into a "what killed the mournland and how do we stop it from happenign again" campagin. But, as has been suggested, just open to a random page in the ECS and let your imagination soar. (Edited for stupid typos) |

| Dwarven Godfather08-31-06, 02:10 AM | These two ideas I was going to work on before real life hit me: 1: The group is a security force for either a Lightning rail or an Airship: Cargo equal to the Money train for the dwarves of Mror Hold and these are their adventures. 2: A Mad Dwarven Artificer wants to create his own Warforged and would need the components of a Creation Forge which would take the characters all over Eberron and even into Xen' drik for adventures.. The Five Nations book has alot of good adventures ideas under the Nations and would help you out alot. |
| Shady31408-31-06, 06:32 AM | You guys are great! Thanks for being a sounding board for me. Came up with another idea, not sure what you think.... The House Cannith artificer will have made a group of four or five warforged. They aren't typical warforged as each is specialized. The names are generic for now just quickly thought up. 1) Warforge Rogue (Pierce) Feats undecided 2) Warforge Monk (Silverfist) Mithril Body 3) Warforge Druid (Oak) Ironwood Body 4) Warforge Wizard (Mystical) Unarmored Body 5) Warforge Fighter (Player 4) Adamantine Body I want to work it into the story that the PC Artificer was experimenting with different versions of warforge (up above) and came up with some interesting and new technomancy (sorry I'm a White Wolf geek too). I could see Player 2 (evil rogue) as being a mole from another house. They basically tell Player 2 to protect the Artificer at all costs and learn from him about his creations. Perhaps try to steer him into creating a new forge some day (near epic levels) so they may try and take it over. No real point here, just throwing some campaign ideas out there. If you make the changeling rogue a mole it could be for the Cabinet of Faces. As followers of the Traveler they'd have a great deal of interest in "creation." Plus the Cabinet is very very Eberron. Another house doesn't make much sense. Warforged creation forges require the mark of making. Plus making more is forbidden by every nation. If you just meant see what the Artificer makes it could simply be another branch of House Cannith. Remember there are 3! And intrigue is also very Eberron. If it is their first Eberron campaign I highly recommend starting them out in Sharn. It too is pure Eberron. It definitely leaves a mark on players as to what the world is like and I haven't seen any other city that encompasses everything Eberron is when it comes to magitech, monstrous races, intrigue, the dragonmarked etc. Plus it has it's own sourcebook. A fantastic one filled with more adventure hooks than I could ever use. And as the HQ for Baron Merrix plenty of possibilities for the artificer of the group. In fact I don't think there's a single other NPC in the entire world (except perhaps the LOB) with more of an interest in the WF and no one more likely to be a patron to this guy if he is such a genius with warforged. Merrix seems to be obsessed with them. It would also easily merges you into the published adventures Forgotten Forge, Shadows of the Last War and Grasp of the Emerald Claw. All easily modified which leads a group of 6th level pcs to Xendrick to uncover warforged mysteries. Which sounds like exactly what you're leaning towards already. |

| Koesherbacon08-31-06, 04:40 PM | If player 2 wants to be an assassin like character he could go down the PRC "Dark Lantern". They're in the Five Nations book. They're basically good assassins who hunt down evil people... so far as I can tell. If you need the info I could PM it to you to not waste space on this board. As for the others, tell them to play what they want to, not to feel the need to fill a position in the party. If I were joining your party I would probably go with Ex-Paladin Master Inquisitive. That could lead to some really fun roleplaying with that party. :) |
| Lafarallin08-31-06, 05:01 PM | deleted |
| Shady31408-31-06, 05:10 PM | From there I'll work the other players in. I might have the rogue work for the Shadow Cabinet (like the above suggested). The Shadow Cabinet of the Aurum? Did you maybe mean the Cabinet of Faces? I could see how you might mix them up with the Cabinet of Faces there's like 6 power groups that use the word Cabinet in their name. Either way if the player wants to play an "unstable" individual I see no reason either Cabinet wouldn't geas him before giving him such a quest. The geas is simple. He must always do everything in his power to ensure no harm of any kind befalls the artificer. That's specific enough but also a little vague enough to create plenty of opportunities for roleplaying. The changeling might get very paranoid and feel the need to protect the artificer from something like having his heart broken. |
| Lafarallin08-31-06, 05:30 PM | deleted |
| Shady31408-31-06, 05:38 PM | The Geas gives you a good in story excuse to kill him at least. Add a no plotting cause to the Geas. You will not make any attempts to subvert this geas or place the artificer in danger. The geas would kick in the instant he started trying to betray the group. Or anytime he does anything stupid that you can say puts the artificer in danger. If he is talking to a fiend and makes plans to sacrifice his group to it he may change his mind when the 3d6 damage suddenly hits and he is sickened (rogues have poor fort saves). |

According to Secrets of Xen'drik, the Quori built the first warforged... in the respect that they are golems. They are not sentient in any way, and thus have no real bearing on the true origin of construct sentience. The quorforged merely resemble warforged. All we *really* know is that the quori built humanoid constructs, which doesn't actually mean ANYTHING as to the origin of warforged, as Keith has commented on before. The origins of warforged are still a mystery to be filled out by the DM. The giants may very well have been the ones to imbue the quori with sentience, or it could be any of a thousand other sources, from channelling warlike remnants of souls from Shavarath or stealing faded souls from Dolurrh to arcane logic matrices to anything else you can think of. On top of that, I can think of many, many reasons for the use of quorforged off the top of my head, from simply having soldiers to fight the giants who could get to places warded against the quori, to having material vessels that quori could control... |

| Xorial09-01-06, 10:08 AM | Well I now know I'll have: Human Artificer Warforge Fighter Shifter (something or another) :) Changeling Rogue The last guy hasn't decided at all yet. Shifter can play razor claw & eventually, with the right feats, or a forgiving DM, the warforged can throw the shifter into the middle of combat. LOL, I was running a one-shot game this past New Year's were this happened. For all of those old-school X-men fans, this is a "Fast Ball Special", ala Collosus & Wolverine. Very corney, but when they got the idea, it became a very fun & memorable situation. |

| eehamburg09-01-06, 12:29 PM | Remember this when dealing with party interactions. Even if you have an evil character in the midst of good characters, that can still work well together. It all depends on the motives of the evil character. Remember that evil can do good and good can do evil. Eberron is about shades of gray. In addition, think of it this way... maybe the evil character is doing things that benefit his own agenda. Therefore, they may appear to good things or things that the rest of the party would want to do, but that this character is doing them as long as they benefit his agenda and his plans. For every action, there can be a twist or reaction that changes things. Not everything is as it appears. |
| Lafarallin09-01-06, 12:38 PM | deleted |
| eehamburg09-01-06, 12:46 PM | yes ... but even so ... even evil doesn't always do things just to be evil ... think about it ... what character walks around and says "I'm evil". No one. Everyone has a reason for what they are doing. And in Eberron this is just as complicated as it is in the real world. Maybe it was the intent of your character to make the mage go nuts? I don't know, but it worked. On the other hand, while in the situation, you could be saving the child because it will help keep up the pretenses of you being good and as that is happening, you could be accumulating more power behind the group's back in an effort to seize control or conquer a nation or whatever-have-you. It is all a matter of perspective. I don't think that the Dreaming Dark for instance view themselves as being evil or nor do Vol or anyone else. Each has an agenda and a reason for that agenda and it is merely how they wish to carry it out. Don't think of evil as "ooooo bad" ... think of it more as morality. Good would be more moral where evil could be loose or no morals. Stuff like that. What is right for one person is wrong for another and vice versa. Just my 2 cps. |
| Lafarallin09-01-06, 01:52 PM | deleted |
| eehamburg09-01-06, 02:42 PM | That is exactly my point. There are many flavors of evil. And just because someone is evil doesn't mean that they fit into the stereotype. They could be evil in that they are only looking out for themselves. They could be evil because they have loose morality. They could be evil because they get pleasure out of the harm of others. Evil can be played on multiple levels and it doesn't necessarily mean that the person is going to kill/rape/steal from everyone around. To give modern examples, the guy who cheats on his taxes and fudges them could be evil because they think that they'll never get caught. The guy who speeds too much and then lies their way out of tickets could be considered evil because they believe that they are above the law. Stuff like that. Evil can be simple. Evil can be selfish. Evil can be just as easily layered thick. Evil is as evil does. Good on the other hand has a much more difficult time because they have to think of others first. They have to be aware of the laws of society. They have to constantly worry about the consequences of their actions and to be careful that those consequences will not harm anyone. You can be evil and still be "good". It is more fun that way. |

| Bubbatron09-08-06, 07:58 PM | another idea you may want to tryis to runshadows of the last war and then expand on the named cannith facilities in there or alter the symbols on the map ie in my campaign i added a warforged face to tallis hence a creation forge, but had it overrun by duergarwho had mined under the facility, this also came in handy as i had a warforged paladin in need of a special mount so i made a warforged type warhorse, and had it as tallis was experimenting with new kinds of living constructs, i had warforged harpies, warforged horses and i ended with the creation forge being fused with a dragon to dreate a half dragon warforged, i know this sounds a bit ot but it had a decent enough backstory set before the day of mourning |
