New Homonculi [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-15-05, 11:15 AM So the new homunculi are an animate crossbow, and flanker, and a moving treasure chest? Anyone want to tell me why the crossbow is better than a +1 flying crossbow, and what one needs with a moving treasure chest? Just wondering, not attacking, my artificer is very excited for MoE to reach Virginia.

10-15-05, 04:20 PM I don't have the book but I can think of some things.

The bow is animated and can work independently, right? This is potentially a huge advantage in battle. Then there are the stats which may also have an effect on things.

The Luggage [:P] I gather is an usefull helper in the lab/workshop. Sorta' like a nurse in an operating theatre it gives the Artificer the tools and components needed for creating items. Saves time for the Crafter, not having to pause his work to gather the right ingredients and tools.

As said, I don't have the book so I might get something wrong.

10-15-05, 04:51 PM I am not familar with your "+1 flying crossbow" however I can suggest some clear advantages. First your hands are free as it your Homoculi thats doing the shooting. Second is the sensory link all Homonculi have, it can stand some distacne off and provide range support while still being in constant contact. Third it can be imporved, both by hit dice, it's own feats, enchantments, infusions, and the new imporved homonculos feat. Lastly it's still got eyes and a decent spot and listen check which can also be imporved with hit dice.

Ever have problems getting stuff out of your pack? Get a Packmate and always have stuff on hand. Did you get knocked out? The Packmate can help with that. It can also double as a grenade launcher. ;)

The packmate can be upgraded to 3 HD and given the Brutal Throw feat to turn him into a vicious auto grenade launcher...Improve him with +2 str and he can launch better and carry even more. Plus you'll never be down for long with your new Packmate auto-feeding you cure potions when you're KO'd. He can retrieve weapons/items that you need to drop and he can hand them back to you as a swift action. Stuff him into your BoH when you need to split (or Improve him with a couple levels of flight). Slide him under the bed for easy storage. But wait there's more! Take Packmate(tm) to parties to play waitress. Stick him at the front door to hand out candy on Halloween. He can hand tools to you as you work in the garage. Packmate can even feed the cat for you when you aren't home. Buy Packmate(tm) TODAY!

10-16-05, 04:26 PM Consider this for the packmate. Energize Potion from the Book of Exalted Deeds. You energize the potions and it throws them.

I agree these new Homunculi are much better than those offered in ECS. I might actually take one over the standard Homunculus. Inkling you evil little ash cloud, your spot on about Brutal Throw and the Packmate. Also if you give it flight then it could drop heavy items on opponents from hight.

Whether it has thousands of legs or not, there's still the joy of a walking carbetbag of terror; a joy that has been missing from the realm of D&D until lately. Now what I want is Creature Competition 3: Gelatinous Cube vs. Packmate.
