New player. [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-14-05, 09:31 PM I am an extremely new player and wants to have a paladin for the Church of the Silver Flame. Then becoming an Exorcist. My story would be to purify the corrupt the church ministries. I hope you could give me advice on how to get started and other tings too. Thanks for reading this.

10-14-05, 10:15 PM i am assuming by "new player" you mean new to DnD and not just eberron, but i will addres both.

new to DnD: don't worry about prestige classes yet. "Become" an exorcist in your role first, stats will take care of themselves. use fore shadowing in your converstaions with other players, quote from "prophecy" (you can make this up on your own) Say things like "I will banish this abomination just as D'Rakna did in the book of Flowery delights." Or something like that...

Anyway, set-up your character so when the time comes, being an exorcist will come naturally, as if you were destined to be the greatest exorcist of the silver flame, but show some humility - you are a paladin after all. A paladin is a holy warrior. I would also read about the crusades and the teutonic knights, they seem very silver flame to me. Their motivations were very complex, just as everything is in eberron.

new to eberron: The silver flame is a group known for there extreme beliefs. while many follow this path, the common man is rarely a dedicated to the ideal, but rather holds a superstitious conception of god, sometimes spiteful, sometimes giving. The paladin can be a bringer of wrath or love or, most likely, both. Don't be afraid to play a flawed character with a weakness of some kind, either charity or vice. in eberron, characters are allowed to be more dynamic and prone to darkness because the gods are more distant, and the times are dire.

Exorcists are rarely loving, they have been tainted by the evil they seek to purge. "We become what we hate."

10-16-05, 10:24 AM One of my friends said he would be gnome when I get all the books. I have pictured a gnome wizard with the mark of scribing, a low level member in house sivis. A paladin of the silver flame, who becomes an exorcist when a lord of dust demon attacks them on their way to flamekeep. They lead an investigation about how the demon got in Thrane. They soon discover it was the work of an insane cardinal (CE). They go in search of a sword hidden in Zilargo. This sword is the only way to kill the cardinal, for he is possesed by a demon from the dragonshard he obtained. That is about it right now. I will post more when I start it. It will on a thread because it will take me a long time to get all the books.

Nothing stops a DM from creating a particular NPC who is a fellow adventurer in the party, but this is generally considered a bad move as it is extremely difficult to portray such a character, as clueless as the PCs as to the grand scheme of things, when the one who plays the character in question, the DM, knows just about everything about anything which will come into effect during play.

That's a bit tricky, especially as one-on-one roleplaying can get old, fast (well, at least in my own experience). If you're the type to make things up as you go along (instead of planning out every adventure and encounter beforehand), I think you could possibly pull it off, but I would leave it up the other character to make all the important decisions as it would quickly seem as though you, through your DM PC, are simply railroading him into doing what you wish to do.

My suggestion is to find other players. One person DMs, the others play the roles of PCs.

All in all, whatever floats your gaming yacht is cool. Just be ready to deal with the repurcussions.

10-16-05, 08:47 PM Well, of course there's that, Mystic Theurge. I was just trying to avoid the youngin' getting picked on MORE than one already would in the situation.

Remember, have fun with the game. If you and a friend sitting around your house telling stories together is fun, then roll with it. It's all about enjoyment. So have fun, get some other people to play...

Just don't get hopped up on drugs and go out in the woods to play "FOR REALZ". It'd be too late before you realized that there are no goblins in the woods, and your friend can't really heal you of the stab wounds you recieved.

I would highly reccomend getting some more players. Put up flyers if you have to. I finally talked 4 friends into playing and tehy all are really enjoying it (my group has grown over time and I have got several people into the hobby now, and my area isn't really all that big).

As for using your own PC whilst DMing. DON'T! It is much more rewarding to DM than to DM and play as a PC (or NPC with the party.) It gets really tempting to help out the know nothing others. :P . It is much more beneficiary to the game and its story to just play your role out as DM.
