I've never played Eberron before and a friend of a friend is starting a campaing. I have played a TON of D&D (almost 20 years) but all of it 2nd edition and 3.0, so all the source material is new to me. Here are the creation house rules and character I'm playing:

gestalt (sp?) character, one class must be a warrior-type for at least 1st level and one of the two classes must continue (uninterrupted) to 20th level.

Here's what I came up with:
Shifter Ranger/Psion, with Psion being the continuous class.
At 6th level I plan to change from Ranger to the Shifter racial prestige class presented in Races of Eberron (I can't remember what it's called) for 5 levels, then to a Rogue.

At 20th level: Shifter Ranger 6/ Shifter prestige class 5/ Rogue 9/ Psion 20.

As near as I can tell, most of the source material is available (he gave us 6 books plus PHB 3.5), but I don't have anywhere near the time to look these over.

Any ideas or suggestions as to feats, skills, weapons, roleplaying hooks, etc. would be appreciated (and probably used!). Thanks.

I may be mis understanding you, but I think you have a 40th level character there. Psion is a class, just like all the others, and each level in it counts as one class level. Because the shifter's racial favored class is ranger, you would need to keep your psion class and rogue class within 1 level of eachother or else you will experience an xp penalty.

That being said, I do have a suggestion. Try multiclassing the psychic warrior with rogue. That will give you a warrior class to start with as well as some psionic powers. By 20th level you would end up around Psy Warrior 10 / Rogue 10.

While it may not be quite on par with the concept you had in mind, you might also consider going with a few levels of ranger, then psychic warrior, then the prestige class slayer. You could go something like:
Ranger (w/ racial sub levels) 4 / Psychic warrior 1 / Slayer 10

Assuming you actually go high enough in level, that will leave you with 5 more levels to do what ever you want by then. I would guess yuo will continue with psy warrior to maximize your brain skills.

Melvin, s/he is talking about a varient rule fom Arcana Unearthed when mentioning gestalt. It basicly means you level up in two classes at the same time and take the best HD, BAB, etc.

As feats and skills the Character Op boards would probably help you out more.

For roleplaying it's whatever you want to be. A war-torn veteren seeking to cleanse himself of the Last War through the mastery of the mind? A defender of the Eldreen Reaches? Or a mentor to a youger generation of fighters to oppose the Dreaming Dark.

so gestalt is a twink/powergamer option? My DM would laugh at me if I suggested this.

Actually it's balanced out by throwing tougher enemies at the party. It isn't twinkery unless the DM is still sending out regular bad guys. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

Oh I'm not knocking it, I'd love to do it myself I just don't think my DM would go for it. His idea of adventure is to have everyone barely above average so they can rise to the occasion maybe, if you throw an idea his way that may be just the slightest bit powerful he imediately rejects it with comments like "That sounds too UBER I wouldn't allow it in my campaign." Such was the case with the factotum class from dungeonscape and I hadn't even gotten two sentences in about the class when he said it. Don't get me wrong he's ok with growing into power with a character but classes like the ones in tomb of battle he has decided are to powerful to be played and think that they upset game balance. It can be annoying sometimes but over all he really is a great DM so such is life.:bored:

Just a brief thought. If the DM has to throw tougher enemies at you, then wouldn't that in itself tell you that your character is overpowered?

SSSHHH!!!! :incog: A certain some one might here you. Thats the reason why my DM doesn't like certain classes if he see his fears being confirmed.....

Gestalt characters, in and of themselves, are going to be overpowered unless you pick really stupid class choices in the first place. That's the whole point of playing gestalt characters.

So, yes, of course they're going to be overpowered, and hence, why the DM is going to be sending in greater challenges towards 'em.

Remember that Gestalt is a campaign option. You either play with all Getalt PCs, or you play with none.

It's really meant as a way for smaller-than-average parties to still have all the bases covered.

Sorry I didn't clarify more. We're using gestalt options because there are only two players and a new(er) DM.

I consider gestalt to be a form of "power gaming" (I'm not slamming power gaming) which isn't really my cup of tea, but the friend that I'm playing with and I started gaming together almost 20 years ago. We played a Basic D&D campaign together for about three years. We haven't played together since (either he or I have DMed all the games since then), and we are excited that we don't know the ins and outs of the setting (or the rules for that matter- immediate and swift actions are the s#!t).

Anyhoo. Yadot, you got any depth to your suggestions? What do the Eldreen Reaches need protecting from, or are you speaking generally? The Reaches are the "Shifter" homeland? Also, I have NO CLUE what the Dreaming Dark is/are (though I think I'll let the DM decide what he wants to tell me- or my character-about it).

P.S. The other player is a Changeling Atrificer/Mage, although he will start as an Artificer/Fighter until second level. He also plans to take the Recaster racial prestige class.

The shifter homeland is in sarlona, on khorvaire most of the shifters can be found in the reaches.

the reaches need protecting from the daelkyr(abberations),
the fey, the children of winter(DRUIDIC DOOMSAYERS), and all manner of ancient infested ruins, manifest zones, etc, etc.

Heres another thought, if you have the races of eberron book you might look into making a dreamsite shifter druid and go for the moonspeaker PrC. If you go that route with the whole psion deal you would be a complete stomp monster. This route would also let you become the party tank as needed. Even better, instead of a psion perhaps a psych warrior so that you cover the warrior requirements as well. this route would set you up to utterly destroy anything that moves. If you take the shifter racial druid lvls it would help to optimize your shifter by giving you more shifting turns and more shifts per day. you would lose your pet but gain so much more ie. as you lvl with this regardless of changing classes you would gain a higher and higher score for any one of the physical abilities per day.

I don't think it states that there homeland is sarlona I believe it only says that there are shifters there as well but if I am wrong on this it wouldn't be the first time.:D

IIRC, it states that shifters originated in Sarlona, along with humans and ogres. It also sounded like this fact wasn't common knowledge in Khorvaire, and is a recent revelation that has academics in a tizzy.

As far as concentrations of shifter population in Khorvaire goes, the Eldeen Reaches is probably the largest, with smaller numbers in what is still Aundair. It's not for everyone, but I've always been a sucker for a shifter Silver Flame devotee from Thrane who wrestles with the past of his or her religion and homeland. Oooooh, angsty drama!

Ok first what does IIRC stand for again? Second ok you might be right on that now that it was stated that way I seem to recall something of that nature in SoS. thanks for the refresh.

thanks for the clarification I know DnD but I'm still new to this wholle online chat so some of the abbr. are obscure to me. So my next question is have you built the character yet and played it or are you still working on it?

We're playing in two weeks and we are supposed to have our characters finished (so that we can beign playing right away). We haven't made characters yet, but we did tell the DM what classes we were leaning toward (though he wasn't overly concerned about which race we were, so that is something that is still negotiable- i.e., I can't/haven't decided yet).

I always ran Darksun back in the day and I always enjoyed psionics, so I want to play a Psion (the equivalent of a 2nd Ed. psionicist).

The two fighter-type psionicists (psychic warrior and soulknife) are cool but I'd rather not sacrifice maniferster levels, # of powers available, and # of power points.

Other than that, my other level (gestlat char.) needs to be a warrior class (+1 base attack) for at least the first level, after that I can change freely (within house rules of course). Considering that the only other player is going to be an Artificer/Wizard/Rogue (or some combination therein) type character, my non-psion level pretty much needs to be a fighter-type (see my two posts above for more details).

Thanks again.
