Ok this is a continuation of my previous thread. http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=842804
This is what has happened this far. With the aid of some timely reinforcements and a bunch of undead our intrepid heroes were able to hold sharn long enough to let the civies escape the city.

Sharn is now held by a demonic force that is growing in numbers. The dragonmarked houses can get nowhere near the place for fear of having the power of their marks taken and used to power a gate to hell. This gate is conveniently not powerful enough to fully allow the more powerful demons through. YET.

So where should I go with this?
1) How would the other countries respond and act would they take advantage of Brelands weakness or come to the aid of their fellow man without reservations?
2) How do you think the other bbeg's of the world respond?
3) What of the dragons?

The other nations would support Breland. Nobody wants a portal to hell next door to them. :) Something like this could actually band the nations together an actually start to heal the rifts caused by the war. Yeah Brels suck but do they suck as much as literal demons? :) The response would probably depend on how many demons were talking about. King Boranel being the guy he is I'm sure he'd accept military support from the other nations. So if Sharn is swarming with demons a huge multinational army would probably lay siege to it. Deneith would also contribute forces but none of their DM heirs. If it's a smaller infestation this is what elite military units like the redcloaks are for.

Other BBEG's never respond well to other Super Villains coming closer to success than themselves. This is why they work so poorly together. They'd send their own forces to deal with this extraplanar threat or sit back and wait to see how it plays out and if they can take advantage. Even the LoD wouln't like this situation. They like demons native to Eberron not extraplanar ones. Unless this is some Gate to Khyber? In which case the LoD might lay claim to the city but then the Dragons absolutely start getting involved. They aren't going to like Age of Demons the sequel.

The Dragons sit back like they always do. I suscribe to the "When Dragons get involved they bring so much power to bear that large areas are obliterated. So they let the minor races handle things themselves until a threat becomes large enough to threaten them" theory. I see them getting involved in two situations. 1) If the demonic invasion grows to such proportions most or all of Brelandis threatened. This is bad because the Dragon response isn't like a scalpel it's like an A-Bomb. 2) If the LoD use this to try to jumpstart the second Age of Demons the Dragons will jump in if Sharn falls but still will wait to see if the minor races can handleor contain the threat to Sharn.

The guys that opened the gate were the 2 rak LoD from S:CoT. I hadn't realized they were any different from other demons so did not play them that way.

They opened the gate to the pits of hell but, because of the specialized nature of the opening the only power that they have found to open it and make it wider is the power of the marks. I have it in my head that it now takes both abberant and standard in equal amounts to make it "grow." This "growth" is metaphysical based on the power of the demon so while alot of low level demons and some mid-level ones are poring through the more powerful ones cannot come through at this time.

I did this to make the levels easier for the pc's and more realistic in nature versus the rest of the combatants otherwise the armies of petty humanoids would be swept away.

I hope to get a bit of input from Hellcow on this it being his world I feel his thoughts would be invaluable on this matter (but not absolutley required).

As for the rest of the campaign the trouble I am having is on how far I want to take this.
1) Do I let it spread throughout the land?
2) Do I keep it contained to one country/city?
3) Do the other bbeg's band with the good guys to take down this menace or do they attack on their own? I can see both routes being useful.
4) Lastly what of the world after?

With the crowning gem of the modern era destroyed (Sharn) and maybe more will Khorvaire survive, I could see the dreaming dark giving token support letting the country be demolished and then come to the rescue, Recreating Reidras past. I see a very dark future ahead with what I have wrought.

:pile: It means I'm jokingly referring to the planar incursions of Dal Quor and later Xoriat which did absolutely no harm to Eberron at all. :D I was agreeing with the last sentence of your post.

I refer to the more base meaning of that sentence while its effect will mean nothing in the grand scheme and be but a hiccup in time, to humanity it could very well be the big one :clutches at his heart: (name that quote):D

Hello?
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?

I sometimes feel as though I am speaking to the wall.
Is it just me in here?
Am I writing to myself?
Looking out there I see so many people, but the only answer I get is from the shade.
Have I died, or is this a curse?

Try using paragraph breaks. ;) Alot of people will look at your first post and skip it. The topic also doesn't draw attention. People might read it and fear it is fanfic. You'd have been better off with something like "Help with a planar invasion in my campaign" or "Planar Invasion in Sharn" Etc. with proper capitalization.

And I wouln't take it personally. Rarely has a topic I started gathered much responses.

So where should I go with this?
1) How would the other countries respond and act would they take advantage of Brelands weakness or come to the aid of their fellow man without reservations?

Attacking Breland now is a bad idea, considering the force coming through the gate is little known. Of course, we should not assume the other nation's leaders are necessarily smart or sane. Thrane would almost certainly send a military force, invitations or no. Other nations might "offer" troops in return for "concessions".

Breland would probably get as many wizards as possible to help them analyze the situation before launching an attack. Boranel should know better than to send a heck of a lot of knights to the city right away.

2) How do you think the other bbeg's of the world respond?

Watch and wait. Many BBEGs will not be directly affected by the events, and may assume that the "good guys" will win. If it looks like the good guys will lose, they make "make an offer that shouldn't be refused" and, of course, get to toot their own horn.

Sharn-based villains might go out of their way to oppose the demons. It's a little hard to run a black market operation in Sharn without citizens or visitors, y'know. Other villains will take advantage of the refugees.

I think demonic cultists might show up, of course.

3) What of the dragons?

I wonder if they're strong enough. There are lots of draconic factions; I can certainly picture some of the rasher or angrier dragons getting directly involved.

I think you may have trapped yourself in this situation, though. You've unleashed your plot device, now you need one to end the invasion. The PCs can go get it from Xendrik, Argonessen, or whatever cool place it could be hiding.

You know, your ideas are actually reminding me of some of the plot points from a flash game called "Exmortis 2." You can find a link to it by googling the title of the game, but it is a horror game and NOT kid-friendly at all.

You have the option of REALLY playing up the horror aspects of the plot here. A near-unstoppable army of demons is starting to swarm into the Prime Material Plane, and there is a very narrow window of time during which anyone is going to have any chance to stop them. The stakes are going to be very high, and your players (not to mention the characters) ought to be outright terrified of the consequences of failure here. You should probably spend some time playing up this aspect of it.

As far as plot development goes, I would strongly advise that you develop on your own several ways of defeating the demons and driving them back into Khyber. Feel free to go MacGuffin-crazy with this if you want. ("We can close the gate if only we can find the Orb of Whatever and Scepter of Whosie-Whatsit!") These plans can vary from the subtle (getting the right fiend to betray his fellows at just the right moment) to the extreme (convincing the dragons to nuke Sharn). Once you've figured out several ways by which the players could possibly win, you'll be ready to plant hints and leads that they can follow up on as well as be better able to react proactively if your players come up with an idea that you haven't thought of. (Or rather, WHEN they come with that idea...)

I just realized that I posted that whole thing and didn't even get to your main question, which was how the rest of Khorvaire and Eberron would react to the fiendish invasion.

Let's start with the major human nations. Breland will mobilize its entire armed forces to combat the incursion within its own borders. Boranel has been working hard to develop positive diplomatic relations with Karrnath, so I think it is reasonable that Kaius would send in his own forces to help if Breland made an official request. Thrane, of course, could easily be convinced to commit forces because of the presence of so much organized supernatural evil. (In fact, the populace might even demand it.) That leaves Aundair, and that's where things get tricky.

Aurala is going to see Boranel amass the largest army mustered since the end of the Last War, and she won't like it. She's going to have to acknowledge the magnitude of the threat, however, and the political implications won't be lost on her either: Once Breland is victorious (Aundair's troubles will be much greater if they aren't), Aurala cannot be seen as the one sovereign of what's left of the Five Nations who did not commit forces. In order to preserve her position in Khorvaire once the dust settles, she must aid Breland in its hour of need now. This doesn't mean she can't play the situation to her best advantage, however.

After the fiends have been defeated, she's going to have her own army inside the borders of a dramatically weakened Breland. She'll want allies, so she'll make a timely and generous "charitable donation" into the coffers of certain influential (and extremely corrupt) bishops within the CotSF. Imagine the effect on public opinion in Thrane once the local churches start to decry the whole affair as being the obvious result of the rampant immorality of the Brelish people! "If the residents of Sharn had been righteous Flame-fearing people instead of hedonistic atheists, none of this would have happened!" (No, it doesn't matter whether the sermons have any basis in truth at all, as a matter of fact.) Soon, the people of Thrane will be demanding that Action is Taken, and Aurala will have her forces already in place to lead the charge. Breland will find itself under attack by both Aundair and Thrane before it's had a chance to recover from the battle with the fiends.

Maybe Kaius will stick around long enough to help his "friend." Maybe he won't. Who knows? He's probably been away from home too long already, since the lich-who-shall-not-be-named has probably been having a field day with the power vacuum left in Karrnath when all of the military left to fight a foreign war.

Heh. You think all of the children of Gallifar would unite to battle an extraplanar threat? Keep an eye on your watch, buddy. It ain't gonna last long.

Very Informative Sal I thank you. I think I can work with these ideas, in fact I especially like the thrane/aundair aspect I think I can work this in somehow.
I don't see Kiaus leaving Karrnath. I do see him allowing the contents of fort bones and fort zombie to spew forth along with a healthy brigade or two of regulars for support.
I think what I may do is have the dragons send forth a representative and inform the little manlings that they have X amount of time to handle this or the dragons will handle it for them, thus turning Sharn and the surrounding area into a heaping slag of ash, glass, ice and acid pits.
The after math and where to take the PC's afterward is still an issue I am having.

Quick question do you see any of the major NPC's like the respective kings and queens dying in this ordeal? What would the queen of Thrane do in this situation would she try to use it to wrest back control and how?

Whether he personally leaves or not would actually be a moot issue. The important part is that he can only help Boranel by critically weakening his home guard. (Don't try to run the numbers on this. You can just wave your hands over it as the DM and declare it to be true. "Our Republic Credits are good here," and all that.) With the army (or significant portions thereof) elsewhere, Karrnath itself becomes vulnerable to infiltration by other factions not involved in the conflict with the fiends. The list starts at Vol, but can be extended to include the Aurum, the Deneith insurgants (from Dragonmarked), or anyone else you want to bring in. Kaius is probably going to have his room-temperature hands full trying to deal with all of the troublemakers who will start to pop up out of the woodwork.

I think what I may do is have the dragons send forth a representative and inform the little manlings that they have X amount of time to handle this or the dragons will handle it for them, thus turning Sharn and the surrounding area into a heaping slag of ash, glass, ice and acid pits.

Better yet, the dragons might not send out a warning at all. Think of it in terms of the Vorlons and Shadows from Babylon 5: They never warned anyone that they could take out entire planets, they just amassed armadas and started to blow stuff up. The dragons might very well consider themselves several evolutionary steps above mere humanoids, and thus believe that any beings that are incapable of stopping the fiends on their own are beneath notice. Exterminators don't bother telling the ants that they're going to take out a nest of rats, after all. Maybe the warning will come from a member of the Chamber acting on its own (at almost the last minute, risking terrible censure for its actions from the other dragons), or maybe the players will figure it out from some other clues that you give them. Don't do it by way of an "official emissary."

Quick question do you see any of the major NPC's like the respective kings and queens dying in this ordeal? What would the queen of Thrane do in this situation would she try to use it to wrest back control and how?

I think you can be sure that almost every major power in Khorvaire (and beyond) will be doing everything they can to manipulate the situation for their own personal gain. You don't really have to kill off any heads of state to radically shake up the status quo in Khorvaire after the Sharn Incursion is dealt with (although you could kill off one or two for fun if you wanted to). Basically, your major BBEGs/BBEOrgs are going to want to sow massive international chaos which will weaken the individual nations and give themselves lots of room to work with without having any heat on them. The leaders of the major nations, however, are going to want law, order and peace everywhere... under their own rule, of course.

Many of your points will make good story fodder for adventures beyond and after the war. I think my DM's block is starting to break down finally between you, shady and psi I think I can start to put together a cohesive story. If you like where I am going or if anyone else does I hope you'll continue to posta bit and I will try to keep you all updated on the events as they occur. What about Syrania, sharn is a manifest zone to what is effectivly heaven. The demons don't only have a foot hold one the prime material plane they also have a stepping stone their ultimate rivals home base. Would the angels help out or remain passive. Personally I think they'd work behind the scenes, perhaps providing information on whatever is required to close the gate.

Or perhaps the gate has destabalised the manifest zone causing towers to fall (especially skyway).

You my friend are a freakin' I had completly forgotten about this and it gives me the perfect answer to who would give them the info on the schema/s to close the gate. I think the angels would help behind the scenes due to the fact that they are now fighting a battle on their own front door as the demons swarm not only the material plane but also the Syrania plane as well. Heres an idea.

You know how there are lots of molten rock areas down in the cogs. Well you could easly say that there is a manifest zone to Fernia down there

The gate is actualy a fully opened gate from Fernia to Syriana and it is the scene of repeated incursons/battles between the angles and demons. The two Rakshasas have found a way to "bore" into the gate and let through some low powered demons.

The Angles have not had any sucess in closing the gate from Syriana so they are faced with two options

1: close the gate from the material plane using the "bore" the Raks made

2: Redirect the gate so that it is closed to syriana and fully opened into the streets of sharn.

BTW I need to thank you for providing me with the metaplot that I have been searching for for my campaing. I finaly will give my players more to do than grind and loot

Here's my own suggestion on your planar breach idea. The 5 Nations get mentioned quite a bit in these posts but if you look geographically, one of the closest "nations" physically to Sharn itself is that of Droaam. Thus they would have a great deal to lose if a potential gate to hell is opened right at their front door, spewing demons everywhere.

Maybe I'm a bit insane but seeing an army of charging minotaurs and ogres, supported by medusa generals and harpy air support with troll shock troopers, all marching alongside some or all of the armies of the 5 nations would be awe-inspiring. :D

my hook was the capture of a favorite DMPC/NPC if you read the pther post I listed in the begining it goes into more detail.
It's kind of funny but this started out as a new war of the mark but as a semi-new DM I started to get in over my with the low level PC's I had so I brought in the group of 10th and 11th level PC that had run through all of the premade adventures that have been put out. I like that especially since the gang that originated from droam has lost their home in the cogs. At one point in the fighting I describe an ogre come rushing out of an alley way an begin to get torn apart by a group of demons. At another point the PC's were hiding and trying to get behind enemy lines to scout and to try to draw them into battle I described a group of 5 goblin children run down and mawled in front of the PC's hiding place (they have a goblin wizard from the cogs in the group.) This tore at their heart strings but they knew they would probably fair no better so had to hold the goblin down until they were gone.

Which government? Some overly ambitious Karnathi warlord or Lhazarite prince perhaps. The Sisters with their inscrutable purpose might have. I think you are thinking of Jorlanna d'Cannith who unknowingly has ties. she's the leader of Cannith West.

I don't recall Aurala, Adal or Darro having any ties. It wouldn't be hard to give Adal or Darro ties. Especially Adal with his search for powerful apocalyptic magic, desire for the throne and willingless to kill innocents.

After the harrowing retreat from sharn and the demons take over of sharn our intrepid heroes have been sent to the Eldeen Reaches and then to the demon wastes in search of some kind of devise to close the demon gate.
What I plan for them is to go after the three broken parts of a schema as the legend goes this "stone of Binding" was shattered long ago which allowed a great demon lord to escape this demon was recaptured by the binding flame the tribe in the waste worships. each of the three pieces were blown to the winds and landed in different places if brought together they may just be powerful enough to close the gate.
I won't go any further unless someone wishes me to but I thought I would update my story to the board for those who care.

I made a post related to what is going on in the people and places board called eldeen reaches beastiary.
The campaign began with a group of pc's that worked their way to 11th lvl. These PC's now lead a merc company calling themselves the "black company" but after an influx of players I started a new group at 3rd lvl they know each other because they are followers/mercs that are a sqaud in the black company.
It is because of their low level that I have them doing the questing prior to attacking and attempting to retake Sharn.
The three pieces will be in the demon wastes, Q'barra with the black dragon/fiend or near there, and either in xen'drick or frostfell to the north?
If they are smart they can accomplish all of this and be in the teens lvl wise by the time they get back to Sharn or whats left of it I have set a time limit in my head so if they don't complete them in that time frame the dragons will intervene.
