| Belabras04-20-07, 08:01 PM | It seems WoTC has decided not to let Paizo continue publishing Dungeon and Dragon (see here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/news/20070419a)) Which likely means that we'll see the last Dragonmarks article in Sept. Frankly I find the situation more than a little depressing. WoTC hasn't been particularly good about publishing online so far, and I've no reason to think that will change. Not to mention that I'm going to miss my monthly Dragon in the mail with it's top notch art and articles. :raincloud |
| Kori04-20-07, 11:40 PM | Why? :weep: |
| DyloniusFunk04-21-07, 12:00 AM | Why? :weep: Why what? Why no more Dragonmarks or why are they getting rid of the magazine? For the magazine i have no clue. Maybe it was loseing money, maybe Wizards want sot take more control for thier grand online distribution plan that dosen't exist. Either way since Paizo no longer has the license they can't print any more Eberron material. Now for online Dragonmarks my guess is that will be aprt of the online plan, charge ya 5 bucks a pop for the new D'Marked. |

Because their record at getting Dragonshards published regularly has been just stellar so far. |
| Syltorian04-21-07, 07:00 AM | All we can hope for, amidst the smouldering ruins of Dragon magazine, is that they have been hoarding the actually good stuff they have failed to put on their website for this new plan of theirs... |
| (Psi)SeveredHead04-21-07, 02:22 PM | I see no reason to believe that Dragonmarks won't make it into the online version of Dragon Magazine. |
| Edymnion04-21-07, 04:39 PM | Yeah, its not like the magazines have been cancelled, they're just changing media. There's no reason to expect the online version will be missing anything that the print version had. |
| DBlizzard04-21-07, 07:53 PM | There's no reason to expect the online version will be missing anything that the print version had. I'm not sure there is going to be an online Dragon or Dungeon magazine. Iindeed, I believe there won't be). I believe we'll have a subscription model with a number of features, as long as you pay the monthly fee. See other related threads on WotC's "digital initiative" to see what has been implied by the survey a few months ago. However, we certainly know any online version will be missing things. Rich Burlew has stated that because of this he has several Order of the Stick strips that won't see print and that he is looking for a way of getting them out. |

| DBlizzard04-22-07, 03:55 PM | It won't be labled "Dungeon" and "Dragon" anymore, no, but it will have all of the same material, so close enough. That remains to be seen. Personally, I just expect the same sort of material we used to see for free on the website, just more of it (hopefully). The cynic in me expects that they will give us the old material we used to have, along with some of the electronic tools (such as the character generator the survey suggested, that allows you to save a whole three characters), just charging us a monthly fee for it. The realist expects it will be more that that. However, I don't expect anything as consistent or as strong as the magazines. In fact, Nicolas Logue has already stated: The real bummer is that even though the sequel to "Chimes at Midnight" will come out in the final issue #150 (I'm immortalized in the final issue!!! Bitter sweet!), I have a killer next installment called "Hell's Heart" rarin to go, and now the trilogy shall remain ever-unfinished. There goes the quality adventures. I expect adventures we see will be 4-6 pagers like we used to see as the free web adventures. In fact, Monte Cook has stated that there was always a group within WotC that wanted to cancel the magazines because they were too good a value. That especially applies to Dungeon given you could get 3 good to great qualilty adventures for $7, with additional articles and comics. He thinks this is likely the reason it was canceled. I will be very, very surprised if we see anything even approaching this. |

Then the answer would have been to raise the cost of the magazine, to my mind. I pay 12+ for issues of some Illustration magazines, I would have happily forked out that much for Dragon. |

Wizards got a license fee from the publishing company - and the magazine staff set their own prices. |

The same Monte Cook who left Wizards to avoid, in his own words, the "Hasbro regime" and went off to found his own company? Because if it is, he sounds like a fine, unbiased judge of his former employer. If you want to talk about adventures, go look at the 2007 catalog. There are nine coming out this year, ranging thin modules to big fat expeditions. There are also Goodman Games' lauded Dungeon Crawl Classics to consider, as well as Pathfinder magazine. All the good adventures are not gone. |

And all of these combined don't reach the value of 36 quality adventures a year, using WotC IP, (plus bonus articles) for less than $40 a year. I bet those 9 WotC adventures cost more than $150 right there. (Pathfinder is an odd case because it likely wouldn't happen with Paizo still publishing Dungeon, at least in this format). |

Yeah, I bet you don't use every adventure you buy from Dungeon. It's more likely you pick one from every issue you buy and revisit the others later if convenient. Also, the Expedition series is meant to run considerably longer than any adventure dungeon is likely to print. There's more economy in buying one 35 dollar book that lasts for 6 months of gaming (which was how long Ravenloft ended up taking) than there is spending 40 dollars on a subscription of which only 1/3 is used effectively. I mentioned Pathfinder because you said every good adventure is going away. I think between Pathfinder, 3 Expeditions, 6 Regular adventures, and the 50 preexisting Dungeons Crawl Classics, and stockpiled issues of Dungeon, there should be absolutely no boo-hooing over a perceived lack of adventures from here until the end of time. |

Too good a value? I suppose if one were to look only at the magazines themselves, that would be correct. However, I've always seen DUNGEON and DRAGON as extensions of the game (as have we all, I reckon). It's because of DUNGEON, in fact, that I bothered to go out and peruse--and of some, eventually buy--many of the splatbooks, due to innovative use of optional material. Viewed in such a light, $6.95 USD + tax may be seen as an investment in my wallet, since--because I now have good examples of how I might use some of the optional material--I'm more willing to spend additional samolians on supplimental books. Call me crazy, but that's a marketing plan that makes sense. |
| Kryptonian Scion04-23-07, 09:42 AM | Do we have to rehash the DRAGON/DUNGEON argument on the Eberron boards? It's taking place all over the Future Releases forums as well as on ENWorld, Paizo, and others. I don't really think Eberron-specific boards are the place for this debate. |

| Kryptonian Scion04-23-07, 03:19 PM | It pertains to Eberron specific material that will likely end with the run of the magazines. Seems pretty topical to me. Your original post was, I agree. But it broke down into debates about the price of the magazine, etc. No big deal, it was just a suggestion. It was nice to have the Eberron boards free of the anger and such going on at every other forum. |
| Grymar04-23-07, 03:46 PM | It has already effected Ebberon. Where do you think all of those articles Hellcow wrote for release have gone? Stolen? I don't think so. They have been sitting on the side waiting until the DI comes out so we'll have to pay for them if we want them. Dragonshards will be released again, but only after you are willing to play $10-15 a month. <the above is my guess about the future> |
| taski04-24-07, 04:56 AM | And here I was expecting a post about a campaign idea involving the disappearance of dragonmarks off of the Houses' backs. Drat. |

To my knowledge, Keith has never said anything about a backlog of Eberron articles for Dragon. |
| Syltorian04-24-07, 12:52 PM | To my knowledge, Keith has never said anything about a backlog of Eberron articles for Dragon. I believe he means the backlog of Dragonshard articles for the website, not Dragonmark articles in Dragon. It could well be that they are hoarding those little treasures to release as part of their Digitial Initiative. It would explain the less exciting period the website is going through at the moment... |
| Edymnion04-24-07, 07:07 PM | Do we have to rehash the DRAGON/DUNGEON argument on the Eberron boards?Yes. It shouldn't be here, it *SHOULDN'T* be 90% of the places it is, but God knows we're not going to be able to stop the self proclaimed martyrs from crying how they're going to leave the game, boycot WotC, etc etc etc. Actually, its getting pretty damned funny. Its like My Little Ponies all over again. The WizO's wouldn't give us a good JOKE that could create that kind of reaction again, but by God, WotC sure did, and they're not joking! :D |

Me thinks you are responding to something you saw elsewhere? |
| PoeticJustice04-24-07, 10:06 PM | You been to Paizo in the past week, Belabras? They're practically burning effigies over there, for pete's sake! Lot worse than what's going on at Future Releases or Enwrold, that's for sure. EDIT: My little ponies? I didn't have an account back then (I think...). Did people actually take that seriously? |
| The White Sorcerer04-25-07, 03:22 PM | EDIT: My little ponies? I didn't have an account back then (I think...). Did people actually take that seriously? Yeah. When they removed the MLP avatars, my rage burnt with the heat of a thousand suns. |
| Belabras04-25-07, 04:21 PM | I thought it was hilarious. I haven't been to the paizo boards PJ, but I believe you. |
| DBlizzard04-25-07, 05:40 PM | EDIT: My little ponies? I didn't have an account back then (I think...). Did people actually take that seriously? What's odd is that the comments I saw suggested that it might actually be a really good idea (getting a new demographic of players into roleplaying). |
| DBlizzard04-26-07, 12:38 AM | The same Monte Cook who left Wizards to avoid, in his own words, the "Hasbro regime" and went off to found his own company? Because if it is, he sounds like a fine, unbiased judge of his former employer. I never saw him use that reference, at least not with that emphasis. Even so, he's gone out of his way to say that he has no ill-will towards WotC. He was just giving his POV that it's a mistake, and mentioning something that he experienced that may have had bearing on the matter. Or are you disputing his comment that there were a faction in WotC that felt that the magazines were too good a deal? |
| Arcane Guyver04-26-07, 01:29 PM | Dungeon, at least, was probably considered way too good a deal. As a consumer, you're faced with a decision - Pay roughly $7 for an adventure module set for one APL from Wizards of the Coast (like Scourge of the Howling Horde) or for an issue of Dungeon magazine (which contains at least three different adventures for different APLs, as well as other things of interest). And if Wizards thought that their current online content was competing directly with Dragon...yeah, that's a little too good to last as well. One of the few good things that might come about from this development is that we might get a more regular dose of dragonshards. Of course, we'll probably have to PAY for them now...:weep: |
| PoeticJustice04-26-07, 04:51 PM | Or are you disputing his comment that there were a faction in WotC that felt that the magazines were too good a deal? Absolutely. When something's too good a deal you raise the price. It's basic supply and demand and that's what the company did with minis and magic. You (being wizards) do not cancel it for being too good a deal. |
| PoeticJustice04-27-07, 10:14 AM | I just read the interview at ENworld that has pretty much confirmed what others have been saying: WotC will create a pay section of the their website to replace Dragon and Dungeon. I am deeply disappointed by this news and am not sure at this time whether I'll continue to buy their products or visit this site. |
