We've all had it happen atleast once, some have seen it destroy gaming groups, and some have been turned away from the game by it. What am I talking about? A dispute by between the local Rules Lawyer and the DM. Regardless if its the effects of a spell, a combat action, or whether or not a monster would think like that a Rules Lawyer is going to make his argument, and if the DM gives in then the RL will know he can bend the action of the DM. What do you do with that guy who constantly questions your rulings? Turn him into your assistant DM. Say whaT?

Why would you do this? The rules lawyer thinks he knows everything, and if you ask him to assist you suddenly he thinks your admiting that (your adding a little to his pride, but ce la vie), he will be more than willing to dig through the MM, DMG, and PHB to look up a rule (trust me, they do it all the time over how much cover a certain size tree should give). So instead of having an argument every session have a guy that helps you out with those tasks that drive you crazy.

Just a thought. :D

Sounds like you are having some conflict in your gaming group. Why don't you talk to your fellow gamers directly, instead of resorting to a useless rant on the Eberron boards?

Make your judgement, stick by it, tell the smacktard to close his books and that he can make his point after the session is completed. The most important rule in DnD is that the DM is the arbiter of all disputes, your word is final and you need no justification for why things are working contrary to the printed rule in that particular instance.

That was far from useless. It was a universally applicable suggestion. It probably doesn't belong on the Eberron boards, but whatever, it is still a good idea I've used for years.

Nowhere in my first post did I even hint at having problems with a Rules Lawyer in my group. Actually at this point my gaming group is very balanced, and I don't have any problems within my group. Just sharing a thought, as I said, and hoping that someone else out there could use it. Turning a rules lawyer into a help rather than a hindrance is just a plain good idea and I figured someone out there could use this approach.

And now I realise that maybe I should have posted in the main board, but I don't frequent there very often. :D
