i was wondering, how does the noble houses of the 12 nations, fit into the grand scheme of things?
after all the noble houses were the ones fighting the last war. not just royalty arguing over the crown. the vassels and knights of the kings and queens of the nations were the ones doing the fighting in the name of their leige. they gained and lost power over the long war.
the dragonmark houses are cool and all, but they are the buisness end of things.
i imagine the nations and noble houses to be simular to GEORGE R.R. MARTINS "A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE" SERIES. (i recommend these books for anyone interested in fantasy, they are the best books)
how can the PC travel across Khorvaire without dealig with this aspect. politics, ambition, bad temper and bad feeling over the Last War.
Eberron stands to be a huge political game if everything comes to play, in addition to a awesome combat and roleplaying adventure.
not only do you have the dragonmark houses moving for power but the rulers of the nations and the interaction of the noble houses wanting power also.
it reminds me of BIRTHRIGHT alot.

anyone else have simular thoughts.

we should start a listing of the noble houses and their postitions and motivations.

here is an example of a noble house. this is taken from
http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/Heraldry
this site is based from the song of ice and fire series. it is an unbelieveable cool source for noble houses and knights from the books. with some work they could easily be worked into a campaign (not officailly) but it would add alot of flavor.

example:

An ancient house with the blood of the First Men flowing in its veins, the Starks have existed at Winterfell for some 8,000 years. Winterfell was said to have had its foundation laid by the legendary Brandon the Builder. For at least a part of those many millenia they were the Kings of Winter and were the last house of the First Men to rule a realm before Aegon and his sisters came on their conquest. Their motto is, "Winter Is Coming." The Starks have served as Wardens of the North under the Iron Throne. Lord Eddard Stark is best friend to King Robert, having been fostered with him at the Eyrie and constant companion in the war against the Mad King, Aerys. Lord Eddard is wed to Catelyn Tully, who was intended to marry his elder brother Brandon before his death. They have had five children, of whom his eldest is Robb Stark. Lord Eddard also has a bastard, conceived by an unknown woman during the civil war, Jon Snow.

granted i know this is context from a very detailed book, but its gives a good idea.
i would like to make the noble houses of EBERRON

Indeed. The ir'Kesslan family even founded a new kingdom (Q'barra). A few of the Brelish noble families are examined in more detail in the Sharn sourcebook, and it certainly is a subject that will be discussed in more detail in the future. As it stands, a few critical nobles are mentioned. Darro ir'Lain leads the Knights Arcane of Aundair. Ruken ir'Clarn seeks to end the Brelish monarchy after Boranel's death. Alain ir'Ranek controls the Argonth. Renn ir'Tanar and Charl ir'Loran control the armies of Karrnath, and neither is pleased with the peace Kaius has engineered. These are simply a few character ideas to work with; it's certainly something that you can expand upon and develop further.

So if I understand correctly:

Dragonmarked families use D' as a prefix for surnames and nobles of the various nations use ir' as the prefix for their surnames.

Common folk have neither.

What about houses/families that are retainers (as in knights, and lesser nobles) of the Dragonmarked families and nobles?

maybe minor nobles would take on a portion of his lords family name. House ir'Duuk is a vassel of house ir'Tal'Sarith,
the new house name would be ir'Duuk Tal'Sarith. may not be the best way, names could get long but you get the idea.

now since the dragonmark houses are international. their retainers and "vassels" should include the house they pledge loyalty to. how not too sure
