I was wondering which NPCs or Factions caught other DM's eyes for their potential in adventures.

Personnaly I see Merrix d'Cannith as being a great NPC to have in a game centered around Sharn, Breland or Xen'dirk especially if there is a Warforged in the party.

He comes across in the limited space in the book he got (I expect to learn more of him in the Sharn sourcebook and maybe The Shadows of the Last War adventure) as a great NPC. I plan to portray him as someone who will do anything to further his experiments short of revealing them or jepordizing his House's prestige and his position within it.

For this reason I don't see him as a villian, more of a patron who is perfectly willing to sacrfice the PCs to further his ends but always lurks behind agents (as he does in The Forgotten Forge adventure in the CSB) to hide his invovlment so any smart PCs can't possibly figure out what he is up to. His only goal is to continue the experiments his father and grandfather began and he is perfectly willing to sacrfice a few adventurers to do so. I think he also likes to work with groups featuring Warforged characters when possible because in monitoring the groups missions what the Warforged gets up to might lead to some inspiration for his next round of tests and ideas.

He may not be the nicest patron be in the long run doesn't really mean the PCs harm; he doesn't care engough about them to have any strong opinion.

As a side benifit, The Forgotten Forge adventure already sets him up along these lines. ;)

Well those are my thoughts, what are yours and who caught your eye?

I reckon that both the Lord of the blades and King Kaius would make great villians.

Was it just me, or does anyone else get the feeling from the Half-Elf Extreme Explorer in the "Sample Villains" section is an homage the the villainous archeologist "Beloq" from the movie "Raiders of the Lost Arc"?

I recall that, when reading the description, the line "You and I are only passing through history, the Ark *IS* history." passed through my head.

LoB and Merrix d'Cannith are the obvious. But as smaller campaigns get started, I see a LOT of potential for the 2 large (the one in the mountains one and the lowland one, no names I don't have my book at work... today...) hobgoblin clans of Darguun. And thet guarantee the involvement of lower level goblinoids that even if they're not "evil" PC's will still enjoy battling.

I rather like Lhesh Haruuc. I don't see him as a villain, though. Rather, I see him as an honorable general fighting a losing battle against time and entropy. He wants to be the leader of a great nation, but he's more like a school principal. You could have adventures that involve the PC's finding and training a suitable heir to Haruuc's throne.

I also think that the daughters of Sora Kell would have a great legacy. Despit 2 of them being evil, they are trying to forge a kingdom for those who have been shunned.

Mordain the Fleshweaver seems like one of the most powerful (18th level transmuter) with a penchant for "creation".

He seems like an ideal contact for the daelkyr to seek out.

Kaius as a villain? He struck me as more of a stand-up guy who's made some mistakes. (Big, big, catastrophic mistakes, yes, but mistakes nonetheless)

Kaius might make a good patron/adversary... but he's not really a villian.

I think Vol the lich will make a great villain. She has ties to just about everyone through the Blood of Vol cult and the Order of the Emerald Claw, and PCs will have a hell of a time sifting through all of her plots and minions.

I think a great adventure hook to use in a game centered in the Lhazaar Principalities would have to do with that one high-profile guest at Darkhold that the book never went into big detail with.

The book also never went into big detail with Kaius the III... the younger one.

Catch my drift? ^_-

Vol has no where to go but up! I mean...where else is she gonna go? She's already had her whole bloodline blown away.
