Being at work, and not having books, will make this hard to explain, but I've noiced a slew of feats that, if I read them correctly, sound something like this:

This feats gives you the ability to make a second save, or skill, roll a limited number of times. This feat must be declaired before the original roll is made AND the results of the second roll must be kept, regardless if they are better, or worse, than the first.

I don't recall that they say that you can declair and intention to use the feat, make your first roll, and on failure, then make a second roll...keeping the results.

It sounds more like it says that you declair the intention to use the feat, make your first roll and virtually ignore it, make the second roll and keep it. In essence, you simply make one roll.

Does anyone know the various feats I am referring to, and can you clarify what they are really saying? I really can't believe that the second case is really how they are intended.

So, the way those work (and I don't know the names, but there are a lot of feats and class features like that) is you roll your save.

Note: The DM should not be telling you what the save DC is.

Then, you look at what you rolled, and the DM DOES NOT tell you if it was a successful save.

You then decide if you want to keep that roll, or reroll using your feat.

If you decide to reroll, you roll again and use the new roll.

Then the DM tells you if the save is successful.

In one of the games I DM, I'd say it would go along these lines:

Situation 1:
*Something happens, where you are asked to make a roll*
DM: Roll for XYZ
Player: Okay, since I have the feat QRS which I might use on this one.
DM: Alright. Make your first roll
*Player rolls a 2*
Player: I'm going to use the feat for today.
*Player rerolls a 17*

Situation 2:
*Something happens, where you are asked to make a roll*
DM: Roll for XYZ
Player: Okay, since I have the feat QRS which I might use on this one.
DM: Alright. Make your first roll
*Player rolls a 14*
Player: I'll keep this roll
DM: Alright, but the feat will have been used for today regardless.
Player: That's fine.

It sounds like you're talking about the various Luck feats from Complete Scoundrel. Generally speaking, they work identically to the special power of the Luck domain - the player rolls, and then may decide to use the ability/feat to reroll (but only before the DM announces the result of the initial roll). The flipside of this is that the player must take the result of the second roll.

Ok, this makes more sense now, and now it seems to be pretty much what I was thinking it *should* mean.

I guess it just read wrong to me, almost like, regardless of what you got on the first roll, you were required to roll again and keep the second.

Thanks for the clarity!

You bet.

You could be a really, really, really mean DM and make those feats work that way!
