Peace movements during the Last War? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm just wondering about what kind of anti-war movements there were during the Last War, and how the Five Nation's governments responded to them.

I imagine that Boranel sometimes made use of anti-war Members of Parliament, trying to use them against more pro-war MPs who thought he wasn't being aggressive enough, or that he shouldn't be negotiating, or whatever. On the other hand, if the anti-war Members of Parliament tried to do something that would inhibit the war effort, like cut the military budget or put a ceiling on the Brelish debt, he would go to the pro-war MPs for support.

In Karrnath, Kaius himself wanted peace as soon as possible, but I don't imagine he had much sympathy for conscription resisters and the like, so it might be an interesting mix of promotion of a sort of "legitimate" peace movement, while ruthlessly cracking down on those who espoused things like civil disobedience.

In Thrane, the peace movement would likely to a religious turn. Some Silver Flame priests were probably anti-the-Last-War. Even though the Silver Flame is generally a militant church, many probably felt that this wasn't the right thing to be militaristic about.

Generally speaking, I wonder if the peace movements in the individual nations were linked into a broader, Khorvaire-wide peace movement, so that peace advocates in Breland had contacts with peace advocates in the Mror Holds and such.

Thoughts?

I can easily see Flamers of all nationalities opposing the war. "There are evil spirits out there, things that do not care who sits in the chair in Thronekeep, so why are we wasting our time with this when there are better things for us to do?" That said, I think that this attitude would be much less common in Thrane itself, as Thrane is too close (in all respects). I see the average followers of the Blood of Vol also opposing the war, and for almost the same reasons. "We oppose death itself. This war has resulted in the deaths of countless people, people that need not have died. Why should we support it?" And yes, this attitude would be much less common in Karrnath.

This is a very old topic, but I'm still disappointed no one had more speculations :).

Anyway, I suppose I don't see much of a peace movement in Aundair or in Cyre, but I don't know much about Cyre, really. Aundair just seems to be pretty much loyal to Aurala and her associates, without very much dissent, and Aurala's a hawk.

I imagine that Kalashtar were rather prominent in whatever peace movements existed on Khorvaire, both because of how the Inspired would exploit a divided and weakened Khorvaire and, more generally, they just seem like they wouldn't like the war. I just can't see many Kalashtar saying "rah, rah, Breland! Let's show those Aundairan jackasses what we're made of!" A few might have been nationalistic, or have been Galifarian loyalists who backed a specific monarch for the throne, but I doubt many were.

I just got the mental image of a group of warforged sitting around a fire playing lutes and singing "Give Peace a Chance."

I know most of y'all don't really like the idea of the 'mature' titles in Eberron, but once I proposed a warforged mutiny leader (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10313572&postcount=2) for a warforged cleric saint (the idea of a warforged cleric saint was the OP's). It didn't get any response (maybe the OP, Baboon_King_Zabimaru, found it helpful. Maybe not). I'm not entirely satisfied with it, because the character leading a mutiny then escaping and leaving a lot of other warforged in the regiment to face retribution seems unsaintly. Wasn't really sure what to do there.

I figure that pretty much everyone hung those who were guilty of 'treason' and there was now allowed dissension that the war must go on.

Well, while Cyre still lived, she was the nation with the rightful claim to the Throne of Galifar. Any peace, but through victory, would probably be seen as a loss by much of Cyre's leadership.

Ah, but aren't we overlooking one of the biggest peace movements? I believe Q'barra was founded on the very premise of "Hut, two, three, four/ We don't want your f*ing war." An entire country of dissenters! I imagine that for a lot of doves, Q'barra became the "safe" alternative to service (as long as one overlooked the lizardmen tribes).

The topic of hanging warforged for crimes came up the other night in my gaming group. If a warforged commits a crime in which the punishment is "to be hanged by the neck until dead" the nation carrying out the sentance is going to need alot of replacement ropes.

Picture it ten years after the execution begins, the executioner takes the warforged home with him everynight after watching him dangle at the end of the rope all day. Day after day, reporting to the mayor or representative of the crown that "the prisoner is still alive, I'll hang him again in the morning."
