Prerequisits: Two weapon fighting, weapon focus (rapier), weapon focus (dagger)
Benefits: When you are wielding a rapier and a dagger together with the dagger (main-gauche) in your off hand, you may choose to attack with only the rapier and gain a +1 shield bonus for wielding the dagger. If you do this, you may use your normal attack bonus as you are fighting with only one weapon. You may also use the dagger to make a disarm attempt as if you had the improved disarm feat. If you do, you sacrifice the +1 shield bonus and must apply the penalty for two weapon fighting with the feat to your attack roll(s) for that round. You may not make another attack with the dagger if you make the improved disarm attempt with it.
This is intended to represent the main-gauche fencing style that was popular in Europe during the rennaisance era. In real life, it is not a practical fighting style, but it is flashy and fits Eberron pretty well. Can't you just see some laughing swashbuckler jumping from one airship to another to fight with the rapier in one hand and dagger in the other like it's a casual duel? :)

Seriously, what do you think? Does it need more prerequisits? Should that shield bonus be a +2? Should it be usable with longsword or rapier? Is is crap?

02-13-06, 11:01 PM seems close to the crescent blade style feat from CW, which while it has more prereqs. it is useable with more weapons. i believe it lets you disarm as well, but not a shield bonus. you could just figure that in to the original feat though.

Second, seems the only thing that differentiates this from Two Weapon Defense is that it allows you to use the off hand weapon as a disarm attempt. Perhaps you should just make Two Weapon defense a pre-requisit for this feat, and give it some other characteristic to make it worth taking.

I actually think it's a bit weak for all those prereques.

My plan was to combine those two feats, but limit the weapons it can be used with to balance things out. I also was honestly hoping to apply this to a level 6 human Swashbuckler.

This is intended to represent the main-gauche fencing style that was popular in Europe during the rennaisance era. :teach: Main gauche literaly means left hand in French. It is also the name of a type of dagger intended to be held in the off hand and that has a triangular knuckleguard. It was popularly used with a rapier for fencing and dueling by Europeans during the Rennaisance era. The dagger was used to guard from your opponent's strikes and to make attacks should the opportunity arrise. Main gauches were also commonly designed to trap the blade of an opponent's rapier so that the opponent's sword could be disarmed or broken (think of the DnD sai).

The germans had a particularly interresting version that included a tiny switch in the hilt. When opperated, the blade would split to a 30 degree angle. A duelist could surprise his opponent by snapping his blade much more easily or could attack to inflict two stab wounds instead of one. :)

The main gauche style, in real life, is obselete because fighting with a single weapon is much easier and gives your opponent a smaller sillouette. It was never even meant to be a real battle style. It was used for formal duels and for sport. It is still used for demonstrations, but nobody competes that way because it's stupid to do so and against the rules. This was intended to give the character a more regal, classy feel: he uses an old dueling style favored by snobbish aristocrats even when he's in battle. :cool: (Dumb, yes, but also :cool: )

That said, maybe the feat should look like this:MAIN-GAUCHE STYLE

You may also use the dagger to make a disarm attempt or a sunder attempt as if you had the improved disarm feat or improved sunder feat. If you do, you sacrifice your shield bonus from this feat, and from Two weapon defense. You must apply the penalty for two weapon fighting with the feat to your attack roll(s) for that round. You may not make another attack with the dagger if you make the improved disarm or sunder attempt with it.Of course, Improved sunder is just about worthless. :twitch:
