| Xander Opal06-24-04, 06:21 PM | Steel Smith's In the middle levels of the towers of Sharn, in an out of the way place, is a simple smithy run by a Cyre refugee. An experienced Warforged by the name of Steel Smith decided to open up a shop doing what he knew best-- fixing and crafting. He's a heavy, dark grim fellow whose gruff manner often rubs strangers the wrong way. Once a person gets to know him, however, his better qualities become visible. Primarily, he is honest and hard-working; when he says he will do something, it will be done, barring disaster. His smithy is small, the living quarters in back even more so. He works the day and night 'round, stopping only to get supplies or to see to a customer. What personal effects he has left from the war are stored out of the way in the shop itself; the back room is given over to his apprentice, a young man rescued from Cyre/the Mournland after the disaster. Steel Smith sells a variety of metalworks, specializing in weapons and armor. The products are nothing special for the most part, being only slightly above average in quality. He's been getting something of a reputation for being able to do rush orders in record time due to his ability to work day and night. His apprentice, Jaset Smith, survived the cataclysm by sheer luck; Jaset's parents weren't so lucky. He was wandering in the mists, when he happened upon Steel Smith. They soon made it out into Breland, making their way towards Sharn to seek their fortunes with the tools Steel Smith salvaged from the remains of his unit. Jaset is a bit of an unruly teen, but beneath his veneer of bit-champing, he has a deep respect for the construct that is his only family. Steel Smith may hire the PCs as guards, while the constables begin to 'look into it'. - A customer of Steel has begun commissioning very strange pieces of steel and mithril. Without good reason, he cannot afford to refuse the work, but the components are making him uneasy. Steel Smith mentions this when the heroes come to purchase or browse, offering a discount if they uncover what this secretive person is doing. - Jaset has gone missing for several days. While he may sulk or talk back, he has never been one to abandon his trainer and surrogate father. The Warforged Smith offers the PCs cash, or a greater value in select pieces of equipment, for Jaset's safe return. Just a little something I threw together that somebody might find use for someday. | Darkest9007-07-04, 06:14 PM | This Steel Smith character and his shop are very interesting components that I will definitely use if my characters are in Sharn. Not to be a critic, but I would like to share a couple of changes I would make, in my own campaign: Steel Smith's name I just don't agree with. Sounds too simplistic for me. Smith could be his 'last name' as it is his occupation. Perhaps I will name him something like Salek Smith. The name Salek may be the name of the person who hired him. Could the blacksmith be at a place other than Sharn (since I don't actually intend going there until the book comes out)? Perhaps Breland or Thrane? I would also like to know a little more behind the origins of 'Steel Smith', what he used to do in Cyre and ect. I will also very likely use the mini-adventure you added. - Other smiths are growing unhappy about Steel's industriousness, and have begun harassing the warforged. Steel Smith may hire the PCs as guards, while the constables begin to 'look into it'. However, my PCs might be the ones sabotaging Steel's shop, instead of saving it, since they are little more chaotic-based than normal parties. Or they may be the detectives, hired to discover Steel's enemies and their intentions. |

Feel free to use this in your adventure as you wish, altering as needed-- the person/place was something I came up with that I doubt I'll ever get the chance to use. I may have more of these in the future. Xander Opal |
| Darkest9007-08-04, 12:04 AM | I'll look forward to those! I intend to do such things as well, as I often come up with NPCs, places, items, and other articles of interest that I never use. Thanks again, Darkest90 |
| ChronosCrow07-08-04, 01:40 AM | Hey, I definetly like the NPC. I'll be using it in my next game, they probably won't get around to the hook though until later. This makes me think there should probably be a thread dedicated to describing homebrew NPC's by DM's. That would be a great help to a lot of people I think. I know it would help me and I've got one I'll probably post too. |

Xander, would you be offended/upset/otherwise not happy if we started using this thread for posting our own people/places? |
| MarkB07-13-04, 06:47 PM | I like this character concept a lot, and I love the name, with its double meaning. I might suggest a few levels of Magewright or Artificer to give him a broader skillbase, but aside from that, it's a very neat idea. |

Actually, I'd considered doing other People and Places threads, each about someone and/or somewhere else. Not upset or suchlike, just that I think it'd make your nifty ideas stand out more.
