I noticed that using DragonShards actually seem to increase the price of some magical items. Why is this?

(1st level spell * caster level 1 * 1800 (command word)) * 2/5 (Twice a day) = 720 gp, but a 1st level eternal wand costs 820 gp. Why would someone make it with a dragonshard if it costs more?

1. dragonshards are in nearly all magic items

2. Eternal wands are just a modification of the wand rules, i believe.

But why would you put them in a magical item if they make it more expensive? You don't need them according to the rules. (With the exception of binding elementals, or enhancing dragonmarks) So why use them on normal magical items?

because they don't. dragonshards are the base rules.

why does scroll ink cost so much? cause its mixed with dragonshard powder.

why does the +1 armour cost so much? because many of the rivets are made of dragonshards.

In Eberron dragonshards *are* the base building blocks of magic items.

They have specific sections in the magic item lists for DragonShard items as compared to traditional magical items. So no, all magical items don't require DragonShards.

Plus if they were the base, they wouldn't make items cost more. They would just be the base cost.

Dragonshard items are a specific kind of item, Those that rely on the Dragonshards focusing properties whereas non-dragonshard items use the shards' basic magical nature.

This is an arguement that has been gone over before but Dragonshards are part of every magic item in eberron, its simply that they are the reason magic costs so much.

The Eternal Wand you quoted initially is more expensive than a normal wand NOT because it has dragonshards embedded within it, but rather because it functions differently (eternally, in fact), not relying on charges but working twice daily. Dragonshards are an aspect of the flavor of Eberron and are often incorporated into a wide variety of different magical items, as stated in the ECS. Think of them as magical "batteries" or "reservoirs". They DO NOT directly influence the cost of an item.

The original poster, I believe was asking why eternal wands were more costly than the DMG guidelines for x use/ day magic items.

The reason is because x/use a day magic items take up a slot, usually a ring, so a person must be wearing them beforehand in order to use them. Eternal wands do not, and are in fact far less expensive than the x2 cost modifier to make an unslotted use/day spell item.

And they fit nicely into a wand holster of holding.
