I'm just wondering if anyone has special house rules for eternal wands with spells expensive material components, such as identify and continual flame, or whether you think that it's largely okay as is (and that there are no 3rd level or lower arcane spells that are horribly game breaking if turned into an eternal wand, even if it's practical and handy for spells like identify).

I personly don't think it's a problem, but I also hate id having an expensive component, and always try to find a work around.

If eternal wands of continual flame are allowed, that dramatically changes the economy of everburning torches. A lamplighting magewright with such a wand, who charged as much as the mere material components of casting it normally (50 gp) would make back the value of the wand back in seven weeks, assuming he could find two cut-priced continual flame commissions per day. Given that a level 3 wizard or artificer could make such an item, there's no reason for this not to happen (it's a pricey item to carry around, admittedly, and a level 1 magewright with such an item is likely to be robbed, but 100 gp/day profits are enough to hire protection: it still pays for itself in a single year if 88% of revenue goes to security -- and that's still assuming that the price for the service is just 50 gp, as low as other casters could go without losing more money than they make.).

But this is just another "D&D and economics don't mix!" post, which I suppose is rather trite and tired at this point. (Like how a level 5, 9th CL spell costing 450 gp for a professional casting turns 5,500 gp of adamantine and related components into 16,500 gp worth of adamantine full plate)

UPDATE: I suppose you could just say that House Cannith makes eternal wands of continual flame, but they charge the same price as more traditional lamplighters, and if anyone crafts an eternal wand of continual flame independently and tries to undercut them, they tend to have an unfortunate but perfectly coincidental accident, or get caught bags of dreamlily in their backpack making implausible denials and claiming it must have been planted.

DMG pp285

Spell has a material component cost...
Item is daily limit...
50x component cost added to item.

That should somewhat balance the issue. Now it simply takes longer to get your money back.
