| Edymnion02-17-08, 08:34 PM | I have a Warlock character (before anybody decides to jump me, I dissallow the Warlock because of the save or die at will invocations, I have no problem with the class as long as those aren't use, and I won't be using them) in a game, and I'm looking to make a custom magic item for him. The basic idea is that I want to make the Warlock Scepter (or whatever it's called) into a gauntlet that runs on action points instead of charges. The scepter (or whatever) as written has charges, and lets you add +1d6 damage to your eldritch blast per charge spent. Set number of charges, not charges per day. So, what sounds good? Straight up +1d6 damage per Action Point spent, with the ability to spend as many AP as you want at a time? On one hand, +1d6 is the standard boost for using an AP on skill checks, saves, and attack rolls. On the other hand, action points are semi-renewable (don't forget DMs are supposed to award action points for particularly cool scenes), and there are feats to boost how many you get per level, so over time you'd get more uses from this than the scepter. On the third hand though, action points are worth more than wand charges most of the time, simply because you can use them for more. So, basic mechanic, +1d6 per AP. Too high, or too low of a boost for an AP? What kind of price range do you stick on this kind of item? |

Due to the limited resources that you have to power it, I wouldn't price it too highly. Somewhere around 4500gp would be my estimate. EDIT: For comparison, a Chausible of Fell Power +1d6 costs 8000gp, and it works all the time, and with Chaotic Spells that do HP damage. This only works with EB, and is limited to your APs - however APs have the potential (with feats etc) to do more than d6. |

How about a variable setting: 1 action point activates the gauntlet on Low, Medium, or High power. Low power: +1d6 damage for 5 rds, Med: +2d6 damage for 2 rds, High: +3d6 damage for 1 rd. That might actually be too powerful, now that I consider it, but it's got to be more than 1 for 1d6, I think... (maybe +1, +1d6, +2d6 for durations above?) |

Low power: +1d6 damage for 5 rds, Med: +2d6 damage for 2 rds, High: +3d6 damage for 1 rd. That seems at odds with the way action points usually work. I think Wih is on to something though. Not quite as potent as I think Edy wants though. Should be interesting to see what others have to say though. |
| Forged_Fury02-19-08, 05:58 AM | How about working within the AP framework? In other words, when you can roll 2d6 and take the higher, the expenditure of an AP grants +2d6 damage to an attack. When it moves to 3d6, you can add +3d6 per AP. Action Boost would change the extra damage from 1d6 to 1d8. That way, you don't have to change the dice mechanic for your AP use. Agree with Wih about pricing due to resource constraints (although a Warlock/Barbarian w/ the Raging Luck Feat would get a lot of mileage out of this). -FF |
| Edymnion02-19-08, 08:58 AM | The effect I'm going for is single shots that can be more powerful than normal. Like... turning a normal energy blast into a Kamehameha type thing. The "Oh crap, he just powered up and took out the whole building" kind of thing. |
