Hola!

I was reading the PHB 3.5 and it says that SLA DONT need foci. Then I was reading the Eberron Campaign Book that a Scrying Crystal thingy for someone with the Mark of the Shadow (Scrying). The Crystal can be used as a focus for the spell.....WHAT? I am confused! Do they need it it? This question also applies to other Dragonmark powers that require a focus in the spell description.

P.S: I am talking about the one for Dragonmarks, not just for the scrying spell.

Well SLA by default do not require a focus unless stated so in their description. Does the MoS say it requires a focus? If not then it doesn't.

It'd be helpful when talking about confusion in a book to mention the page number of said book.

Well considering the Scrying spell creates an image on the focus, I don't think it could be used without one.

@jonci
I doubt it'd be a great leap in imagination to say the image is conjured in thin air or the mind of the viewer. Otherwise, it would be equal to saying "Well, considering a fireball comes out of the bat guano, it's impossible to do away with that component."

The PHB also says that a SPL takes a standard action. So if an elf has the scrying mark it wouldnt take 1 hour to cast?

Look what the SRD says:

A spell-like ability has a casting time of 1 standard action unless noted otherwise in the ability or spell description.
So no, it still takes an hour.
