Elemental Vessel, Folding... [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-16-08, 12:57 PM Just kicking an idea around, part of the general funky concept of taking your average "Boat, Folding" concept but then shifting it to add in a bit of Elemental goodness...

Could the old khyber shard for binding elementals be including in the creation process of a Folding Boat to make them elemental powered vessels?

Rather then the plain old rowing boat have either an "air skiff" or variation of "4 person wind-galleon" (ala the hydrofoil/racing skiff from the old Batman animated cartoon).

And instead of the 24 ft long 5 banks of oars and square mast, go with more of the Elemental Sloop. (in the vein of Yvka's vessel in the Blade of Flame books).

Or depending how much variation to take it.. make the bound elemental a Water one... make it Undersea boat/ship (of course, that might take it a bit too "James Bond"... :cool:

Well, that's the basic thought. No actual crunch behind it, but I'm curious what it might start others thinking....

I take it you haven't read Grasp of the Emerald Claw yet? ;)

As far as crunch, you'd have to consider the added cost of the dragonshard and the elemental binding process, as well as the potential increase in caster level necessary to create such a vessel. (I'm not sure of the minimum level for Bind Elemental off-hand.)

You're also looking at the likely inclusion of a wheel of wind and water into that figure. The good news is, you can justify reducing the price a bit due to the fact that the ship can only be reliably used by characters with a narrow set of specific characteristics.

All of that considered, this would be a very interesting and Eberronian twist on an old magic item. Kudos. :)

01-25-08, 06:08 PM That's it, the original folding boat has a list of requirements of:
CL 6th, Craft Wondrous Item, fabricate, 2 ranks in Craft:Shipmaking.

Crunchy wise, Bind Elemental needs a CL 9th, so with the other general aspects, I was going to think making it a CL 12th or so to make a folding Elemental vessel. Plus a few more ranks in Craft:Shipmaking (due to the inherent differences/difficulties in designing for elemental binding).

Replacing the assorted sails, anchors, oars etc with the elemental struts, and elemental control. (maybe making the Wheel of Wind and Water inherent in the boat rather then a seperate/removable item).

Fluffy wise, the possibly too James Bond feel would be more for the "transformable" nature of small box to air skiff to undersea vessel (I just keep getting flashes of the lamborgini turning into a submerisble...)
Not just having it go to the Undersea version.

Of course, if you're going to go that far.. it might be an idea to have more then just two "vessel" forms. (great for the smuggler needing to do a quick change on his vessel).

02-09-08, 01:00 PM I'm trying to picture what such a contraption would look like. Having it fold into a regular box seems so... anticlimactic.

Maybe some sort of odd-looking arcane globe, such as might be found orbiting the center of an orrerry?

02-19-08, 10:42 AM Well part of it is the whole idea of it folding up into something an Adventurer can carry easily... in a large pouch or such.. hence the original folding box..

Of course making it a strange spherical object that fits in the hand might be a way to go as well..

02-24-08, 07:45 AM What would happen to the bound elemental while the vessel was folded up? Would it still be visible? Could it be detached (like a dragonshard pommel stone), or would it be permanently fixed?

I rather like the idea of an fire-elemental-bound vessel which folds up into (what appears to be) an everbright lantern.

02-24-08, 05:15 PM Well, in an elemental vessel you can command the Bound elemental to return to the khyber shard thats part of the vessel...

So there might be an "autosave" function that when you give the command to fold up the vessel, it automatically sends the elemental into the khyber shard..
