| DM_Dracophile06-20-07, 08:33 PM | Some of my players have expressed an interest in such things as Moorcock's Multiverse, the 'Myth' series, the Amber Chronicles, and a few other sources wherein the protagonists roam a vast multiverse of worlds, by one method or another. Our game started with Eberron, but I'm willing to expand in the name of fun and adventure. I'm wondering if there's been much discussion, either on these boards or in the source material, about roaming beyond the world of Eberron, and perhaps even beyond the existing Eberron cosmology. They how and why of it are something I can pull together. I'm mostly curious about the reality of planar travel using the Eberron setting as a point of origin. Thanks Draco |

There is a section on the planes. That gives you some of the mechanics. And ideas on how they interact with the world in general. All kinds of stuff can go down when planes are coterminous or a manifest zone is around. Planes have had a huge effect on the world and history of Eberron. There have been two planar invasions both with world shaking/altering consequences. It's a common enough occurence to interact with the Fey of the Plane of Thelanis that there are many stories of lost planar travelers wandering through manifest zones or seduced by fey. There's a even a druid sect dedicated to them. And an unpopular PrC in FoE that is dedicated specifically to planar travel and the greensingers called the Planer Shepherd. Manifest zones are the key to plane travel of any sort in Eberron. Plane hopping through spells/use of magic is a rare and legendary thing in Eberron. Few in the history of the world could ever do it. With manifest zones however it's like haing a little slice of another plane metaphysically sitting right next to your reality. If you can gain some sort of sympathy with the plane in question you can shift yourself there. For example in a manifest zone to Syriana if you travel high enough you might find yourself suddenly there. If there's a manifest zone to Fernia you mightbe able to get there jumping into a pool of lava. Fire proection is highly recommended. :) That's the good news. (And not all of it. I could go on) There are stumbling blocks though. Two planes are cut off and you really do NOT want to go there anyways. Xoriat and Dal Quor. There are ways to project to Dal Quor (Actually just dreaming for most races projects them there sort of) but going there is another matter. Another stumbling block is that the Eberron cosmology is kept quite distinct from the rest of DnD cosmology. Specifically the great wheel. However there is a loophole in the transitive plane of Shadow. Theoretically by traveling through the Shadow Plane you can emerge in the shadow plane of another multiverse. Not easy. I've also heard it might be possible through astral space. I'm not an expert on the Planes in DnD. Hope some of this helped. |
| Darakhoranon06-21-07, 08:40 AM | Yeah, for anything even remotely resembling the fantasy worlds you mentioned, DM_Dracophile, Eberron isnŽt the best place to start. However, you could certainly do it. Discussions about this topic usually spring up more or less regularly around here... But youŽd better be prepared for quite a bit of flaming... |
| DM_Dracophile06-21-07, 10:36 AM | Feh, we Dracophiles are flame-proof ;) You guys have helped a lot already, thanks so much! |
| Millenia06-21-07, 04:19 PM | Just look up the entry for Eberron in The Guide. :D Not harmless. |
| Revvecor06-21-07, 04:28 PM | Just make sure you have your towel ;) in case you come across "Eddie's sofa"! |

| yrogerg06-21-07, 10:13 PM | Just look up the entry for Eberron in The Guide. :D Drat, ninja'd again. You clearly stole my idea from THE FUTURE! |
| Kensan_Oni06-26-07, 03:41 PM | As an alternative, one of the things I considered doing for one game (non eberron) was creating libraries like in the MYST series, where books acted as portals between different universes. There was a centeral respository, kind of like a hub, and the books took you to other places. If you wanted just to try out the concept, you can place such a book in a place in Eberron and they can go someplace else for a while... and when they come back, you can get rid of the book if you don't want to do it again. |
| Demangel07-02-07, 01:39 AM | In the Moorcock books, there IS a story (I think revenge of the Rose) where Elric meets a comical sidekick is really a dimensional traveler (quite by accident I assure you) which has this guy popping in and out of places quite unexpectedly. I would use such a character as a plot device myself... Have some unlikely and unwilling traveler from another dimension "pop" into eberron, the PC's get to know him, and then suddenly he pops out... maybe with something of grave importance to the PC's. Then it would be up to you to devise a way for the PC's to chase him down. Remember, just because there is no natural way for people to accidentally pop from Eberron to other places not in it's cosmology, doesn't mean things can't pop into Eberron and leave a loophole behind for the PC's to follow through. The idea is this: Yes normally there is no way, or the only way is the one hinted at above with the plane of shadows or whatever... But that doesn't mean there is no way to enter Eberron... there is nothing that says Eberron cannot be reached, merely that reaching other places might be a problem. But as soon as someone finds a way to enter (intentionally or accidentally) it stands to reason the doorway might work both ways. You could have the PC's start in Eberron, meet this NPC, lose the thing they need, find a way to chase him down, and like in sliders keep popping between different universes till they reach the NPC and finaly find a way home. Make sure to have your PC's wind up in modern earth in a big city for some real adventures in wierdness! I can just see how the parties warforged PC will be received by people in New York City: "WOW great robocop costume man! REALLY COOL!" |
| Phantomcrossing07-02-07, 10:53 AM | There's a flower shop in Fairhaven, Aundair that one night a month is a natural portal to the World Serpent Inn, an inn with connections to a limitless number of realities. Athas (good luck getting back), Greyhawk, extraplanar locations around Eberron and the normal great wheel, Krynn, Torril (and all four of its campaign settings), and anywhere in creation. |
