This question popped up the other day on a website I run that is dedictaed to local gaming. I'm pretty much the authority on Eberron there and interest in the setting is really picking up. I remember this very topic being addressed here back when Eberron first dropped but it's been so long ago that I don't remember specifics. So, instead of rambling about what I remeber, I'll just re-ask the question and compile all the data again. Chances are that I answered properly over there, but for my own interestes, I'd like to here it all again anyway.

So, how is resurecction handled in Eberron? I know that there are very few divine casters of high enough level to cast it, but of those that can, do they? What's the connection to Dolurrh? How do Khorvarian's faith tie into it?

Thanks in advance.

As with so much of Eberron it is left up to the DM. The option exists within the setting to make it easily available to anyone with the coin through House Jorasco and their altars or to make it pretty much take an epic quest or at least A quest for someone like the Keeper of the Flame. I think most go for a middle of the road.

I know that there are very few divine casters of high enough level to cast it,
Well that's the first cap and where Jorasco comes in. A high level commoner with the appropriate dragonmark could use an altar of rez. But it's up to you if only the House Jorasco HQ in Fairhaven has one or if every enclave has one or if the altars don't exist. It all comes down to how rare you want it to be. Interestingly raise dead I think should be pretty common in Eberron which is why I'm sure most murderers mutilate the body somewhat or use a keepers fang weapon. Or pay for the services of someone that will do either.

but of those that can, do they? Depends on their religion. Blood of Vol would feel a duty to always use the spell if they've memorized it for the day. Dying is unnatural and a curse of the gods and all that. At least if they believe in the Blood of Vol and not VOL. ;) It really helps with the conversions. :) The Clerics of Aerenal would rez anyone they felt was worthy or could prove to be worthy of attaining the mantle of undying. An impressive [elven] PC cut down on an important mission would be rezzed in the hopes he would go on to greatness and undying. Or even a non-elf on an important mission for the UC could be raised to help him complete it. Of course you'll probably only be given one second chance.

Of course even they realize this is a very powerful ability and are not just going to give it out like candy. Someone ressed would obviously feel/be pressured to convert and/or at least spread the faith. Or provide service after the fact. SOMEthing.

Other religions clerics are hesitant to rez or even raise dead believing the person is on their way to the sovereigns and that is probably what the Sovereigns want. The Silver Flame would say that person is now part of the Flame strengthening it so taking them away would weaken it. Thus they will do it but only if you can convince them it's in the best interests of their faith. Thus promising to perform a service that will help the Church is usually necessary as well as convincing them the person deserves to be rezzed.

House Jorasco is a source if you want them to be. It's up to you how many members of House Jorasco you want to be able to do it and/or how many altars of rez there are in the world. In their case you just need proof you aren't wanted criminals and have the coin.

What's the connection to Dolurrh?
Ah Dollurh is the kicker. Dollurh's soul-trapping ability is how you rein in even raise dead/rez happy high level BoV clerics or put limits on House Jorasco (if youve made them an easy source for raising) etc. Dollurh let's you put a time limit as severe or lenient as you'd like (since it's up to you when an NPC fails his will save and even a high level PC will fail the increasingly difficult saves.) So that handles raise dead handily. Remember you cannot raise/rez an unwilling creature and Dollurh makes everyone unwilling in time. Ressurection falls into a gray area that's left up to the DM to reconcile.

How do Khorvarian's faith tie into it?

Like I said it makes some clerics more willing than others.

Thanks in advance.
No problem. I had nothing better to do.

I'm really glad to see this thread cause I have been wondering it myself. Like Myth Master Jr I'm the resident final say on just about anything d20.

In addition, who says Dolurrh likes getting it's souls taken back and brought back to life? Your resurrected character just might end up with a Marut chasing him to bring the soul back to Dolurrh...

Ya know, that's an interesting thought! I could actually see that happening given the nature of the plane itself. It would also make for an interesting story arc as well. If you want to keep your soul, you must defeat the Inevitable!
