Mask Aberrant Dragonmark [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-22-07, 10:06 AM The spell Mask Aberrant Dragonmark (Dragonmarked p.152-3) lets the caster treat his aberrant mark as a specific, true dragonmark for the purpose of casting spells and using magic items related to that particular mark. However, it does not grant the true mark's spell-like abilities - the aberrant-marked keeps his own spell-like powers.

This spell seems rather interesting (especially once the Houses find out about it), but I am having some problems figuring out how to apply this spell in practice to some of the items.

For instance: how does this apply to dragonshard items that

1) Enhance spell-like abilities; e.g. the Bag of Bounty (ECS 261, requiring create food and water).

2) Require a special dragonmark ability, but no actual cost of a daily use, such as a Wheel of Wind and Water (ECS 263, requiring wind's favor) or Lightning Reins (ECS 262, requiring dimension door?

3) Grant extra uses of spell-like abilities without naming any in particular, such as the first two benefits of a Diadem of Sharpened Senses (ECS 261)?

Personally, I'd say 1) would not work: one cannot enhance something that does not exist. But I am more confused on the other points.

03-22-07, 03:45 PM I'd say anything that enhances or requires the use of the dragonmark will fail. The spell merely tricks an item like you would use a spell to hide your Evil alignment from a Good-aligned weapon. So for items that grant extra uses of the dragonmark, it won't work. However, for an item that gives stat/skill bonuses, that would work. So the Diadem of Sharpened Senses would still give the skill bonuses, and nothing else. Though since that item has to be worn for 24 hours to be effective your spell would run out before then.
Since it doesn't give you the spell-like ability, you wouldn't get to use any item that requires a certain spell-like ability from a dragonmark. You can use items and spells requiring a true dragonmark, but not one requiring you have create food and water.

Thanks. That's pretty much what I was guessing the answer would be. So Lyrandar does not need to fear that House Tarkanan is suddenly able to fly their airships without any risk whatsoever.
