I was reading threads when I got this idea. What if somehow someone discovered a way to move the manifest zones, or portion of it. Basically this magic item would have to be charged within a manifest zone to be imprinted with its planar connexion. Then when the itme is moved out of the manifest zone, it radiates an aura of a few feet that grants the same effects as if you were in the manifest zone.

Here's an example. Sharn is built in a manifest zone to Syrania, the azure sky. Sharn artificers have built many technologies around the power of manifest zone like the soarsle which is a floating disk that flies yourself around. Out side the manifest zone, the soarsle is almost ineffective. Now imagine a portable Syrania manifest zone imprinted in an amulet. A pirate airship has stolen precious goods, dozens of city watch guards are on soarsles pursuing them over the city. The airship flies out of the manifest zone and is at full speed, the soarsles of the city watch are 'low in battery' and start to slow down and lose height. However, a group of 4 soarsles are still in motion and at full speed coming closer to the airship (PCs with the portable manifest zone) Will they be able to stop the pirates from stealing the goods?

Also, you are surronded by undeads, hundreds of them. Your cleric might need the little boost that Irian's manifest zone could give to his cure spells or his turn undead.

Imagine, such a technology in the hands of Aerenal and the Undying Court, or in the hands of the Quori, or even in the hands of any Khorvairian nation.

Any thoughts?

There's an item like this already. The Planar Orrery in the ECS's magic items section allows you to create a minor manifest zone to a single plane once per day. It's also small enough to travel.

And the Planar Shepherd PrC does something similar.

I knew about the Planar Shepherd PrC from FoE, however, I totally skipped the Orrery of the Planes in the ECS.

In my idea, it was kind of like the Planar Bubble ability of the Planar Shepherd put into an item but instead of mimicking planar traits it would mimic the traits of the manifest zone in a way similar to how the Orrery of the Planes does. However, the difference between the portable manifest zone and the Orrery of the Planes would be a smaller radius (from 60ft to 20ft or even 10ft.) and it could be movable (unlike the Orrery)

I've always narrated infusions as being creating little links between the item and the appropriate plane, like an artificer going "cure light wounds" as being able to tap in just a little into Irian, the Eternal Day.

I plan on running an adventure where the NPCs have unwittingly found an item that links directly to Xoriat, and it's slowly creating a manifest zone to it.

The Orrery is movable. IIRC, it's about the size of a basketball or something. Not easy to shove in a backpack, but then again by the time you get your hands on one a bag of holding isn't unreasonable.

Let me correct myself. The Orrery of the Planes isn't movable while it's in effect (see ECS p.271 at the end of the item's description)

You let artificers have infusions of cure light wounds?

Actually, I just went one further in my campaign. I created an eldritch machine that created a permanent "stargate" to a plane. It wasn't dialable: each machine connected to only one place on one plane. Whoa... terrible, you say. Not if you give it to the right people.

My chosen ones were the Sulatar. They are a powerful people with a singular motivation -- destruction of everything, sort of. They're not going to use it to create a horde of Eberron destroying outsiders, like the Quori or Daelkyr. The inhabitants of Fernia aren't interested in a cold realm like Eberron.

The Sulatar used these portals to fund trade between various Planes. I don't need to go into the details of exactly with whom, but suffice it to say that in every plane, the inhabitants want stuff, and quite often the rarest stuff is not so rare on other planes. That can be exploited to gain what the Sulatar really want -- knowledge of elemental binding and other destructive magics obtainable from the inhabitants of Fernia.

(Where did the portals come from, you ask? Well, as usual in Eberron, from an ancient Giant research facility. The Ginats would have been wanting to launch counterattacks directly on Dal Quor, so a permanently open portal to the place would have been strategically valuable.)
