Subtle Knife

A thought I had - apply the abilities of a Runestaff (from the Magic Item Compendium) to a weapon! A boon to any character or NPC who meshes melee or ranged combat with arcana! In principal, such a weapon might be enchanted as per any other weapon; in order to balance this, I thought that Runeweapon could be considered a +1 property (with respect to current and future crafting costs), in addition to the price applied for the spell-specific qualities. These weapons represent an artificer's craft lost with the decline of the Dhakaani empire, and a remarkably rare finding. Crafting one would require both Craft Magic Arms and Armor and Craft Staff, as well as either study of such a weapon or study of ancient texts describing their craft.

I was thinking of making one as a quest item for a player's Barbarian/Duskblade character, with several touch spells incorporated into it! Any thoughts?

I think if you look in races of stone you may find a prc there for making rune items and feats related to it. This may help and allow you to come up with some quests for lost knowledge.

That's a pretty cool idea, I agree. However, didn't the Dhakaani Empire not favor arcane magic much? I could be wrong, of course. Personally, though, I think it might be more appropriate as a Xen'drik artifact or House Cannith invention.

Well, the Dhakaani did have important bards (dirgesingers?), but as far as I know, we have no "official" stance on the presence or absence of (large) numbers of arcanists in the goblinoids´ empire.

My thoughts run thusly: whether the Dhakaani had large numbers of wizards, sorcerors, artificers, duskblades, etc. is not important. There would have been some arcane spellcasters and artificers, if not many. It only takes one individual to invent this form of craft and make a few weapons for them to be present, if remarkably rare. And while I know that the novels are not canon, there is mention of powerful artificers within the Dhakaani Empire in the Dragon Below Trilogy.
I'll post my plan shortly!

There's also Rune Magic from the Forgotten Realms (FRCS p58). A medium-sized object or weapon can only carry one rune at a time, but its a start.

For korcheck and gaerfindel - you are missing the point. If you can, look at the Runestaffs presented in the Magic Item Compendium. My intent is to create some (rare) weapons that have similar capabilities. I know of the Rune Magic and Rune Items presented in your posts, but they do not accomplish what I am looking for!
