Do you think it is better to gain a Sibery's mark (which lets you cast a SLA 2/day) or a regular which lets you do many things 1 or 2/day? Why? **If yes what is your fav Sibery's mark?**

the Siberys mark for Prismatic Wall. Why? Have you ever just needed to escape a situation and had the following bright idea:

PC1: I ready an action. If that Legions of Doom rush towards me, I'm using my siberys dragonmark of prismatic wall and putting it about 10ft in front of them.

PC2: I ready an action to cast Quickened Melf's acid arrow on anything that makes it through/over the wall.

DM: The entire army is now incapacitated. Except the Daelkyr, who has stopped laughing maniacally and is staring in awe.

It so depends on the House in question.

For certain builds the Sib is ultimate. A Cannith Artificer is better served by Heir of Siberys than he is by the standard marks. The above poster mentions Prismatic Wall.

On the other hand, I think the Mark of Passage and Mark of Healing are better served with the Greater Mark. Mass Heal a couple of times a day is nice, but Assorted Cure Wounds, Resorations, etc, can serve a party better. Greater Teleport is nice, but I'd rather risk the minor glitch of regular Teleport and add Dimension Door and Dimension Leap to my options too.

Depends on the character. With spellcasters, Syberis effectively costs only one character level (the next two have spell progression) while a greater mark would take up either three feats or several levels of DMed Heir.

Now the funny thing with a Mark of Syberis is that you don't have to miss on those other abilities - just get a Dragonmark rod from Magic of Eberron.

I go syberis anyday over dragonmark heir. Their's just something about having power word kill 2/day as a spelllike ability...

What about flavor wise?

So you guys like having some powerful mark 2/day than having a few minor SLA?

As I said: No. I like having both - which is exactly what a mark of Syberis in combination with a dragonmark rod grants me.

Plus, I like the prodigy-feel of a Syberis mark.

Can you do that!?!

Yes, you can. The rod needs a true dragonmark to work and allows you access to every SLA up to your own mark. Syberis marks explicitly count as greater marks for that purpose.

Yes but it's not as great as he makes it sound. It's an expensive magical item (the cheapest is scribing for 30K) that let's you use the lower powers of your dragonmark a certain number of times per day for each level of power. Provided you have a Syberis mark or greater mark and the correct type of rod for your mark. I'm not sure what caster level it would be for a syberis marked. The author dropped the ball on that. You also need to provide the arcane focus and or material components any of the spells require unlike if it was a SLA. And of course this offers you no ability whatsoever to use items that require a least, lesser, greater mark to use such as a speaking stone or wheel of wind and water.

"You use your effective dragonmark caster level" - for Syberis, that's a 15.

Sadly, you do indeed. Of course, that only is a negative side to those spells that have components and foci.

I think it's not a great stretch to allow characters with Syberis marks access to those gadgets anyway.

Ok, I usually prefer to look at the "construction" section which has more reasonable prices (and XP numbers you can get back in about one session of play). *g*

It still remains one item that grants you about three feats - it's worse than the feats since you have to pay material components, but it's also better than them since you can choose between the individual spells which would usually take up more feats.

You could say that except the author then goes on to say 1, 6, or 10 + levels in the DM heir class. Confusing. It's a fine choice to decide the caster level is 15 though. But it is a choice. It's like the author threw in that a Syberis character could use the rod it at the last minute and never re-read to clarify it. Personally I'd not let a Syberis marked character use it. But that's a personal opinion/houserule.

Sadly, you do indeed. Of course, that only is a negative side to those spells that have components and foci.
And a benefit of having them as a mark. No components or focuses required unless the SLA specifically says so. And yeah this screws some more than others. Poor Kundarak using the rod would need components/foci for half the spells while others don't have a spingle spell that uses it. So it's great if you want to use it for the mark of storm or passage. Less useful for dwarven characters.

I think it's not a great stretch to allow characters with Syberis marks access to those gadgets anyway.

It's certainly not an uncommon houserule. I've considered using it. But it is a houserule. The ECS says for example you must have the wind's favor ability of the lesser mark of storm to use a wheel of wind and water. A Syberis marked character does not have that. Giving it to them detracts from the already slightly underpowered least-greater marks.

The price by RAW is at least 30k and even more for the more useful marks. Yeah if you can get an appropriate artificer with the correct mark for your staff to make it for you and give it to you at cost then you might have a point. Seriously doubt that's a common situation though.

That's one way of looking at it. It certainly does grant you the feats if you also houserule Syberis marks qualify you for everything the lower marks do. But that's not true by RAW.

The rod grants you spells per day just like most other rods. Really you could just make a rod with these spells without the restricting it to appropriately marked characters. Of course you wouldn't have quite the versatility some of the rods provide ( a dragonmark rod with all the spells the mark of passage grants is just SO useful) but just because you can get yourself a magic item that uses the same spell as a DM doesn't make the DM useless.

So yes the DM rod is a very very useful tool for Syberis marked. It's not the greatest thing since sliced bread though. Unless your DM (or you as DM) chooses to make it so.

Except for some of the related feats (Protective mark and the other new ones from Dragonmarked), DMs are almost never about power, at least not ruleswise. There are rather few marks which I'd consider worth the investment in feats or levels from a point of pure power. Marks are IMO mainly cool because of the houses they are attached to (yeah, and possibly because of the devices you can use if you have them).

If I didn't make that clear enough: I am (or rather: I will be) the appropriate artificer in our campaign. Otherwise, just do some missions for your house and ask for a rod as payment - they might give you a discount.

Really you could just make a rod with these spells without the restricting it to appropriately marked characters.
Did you do the maths about the price? I'd guesstimate the rod is a little cheaper than it should be to compensate for the limitation.

It's not the greatest thing since sliced bread though.
Well, you can most certainly fabricate a bread slicing machine, so...

No I got it. Just don't think that's the typical situation. Not every marked character is an artificer. In your case that's fantastic. But you can only make yourself a Cannith rod. An Heir that isn't an artificer is out of luck.

It's not so much cheaper as far as I could tell as much as it grants a wider variety of spells to cast. Depending on the mark it emulates of course.

You miss my point as far as syberis marks go there are many things more things far more useful then power kill.

No it's the feel of my gnome wizard eyes going black and his voice turns terrible and he simply whispers to the BBEG
" Death and Damnation, thy name is the Draconic Prophecy and thy voice im myself heir!"

Syberis dragonmarks have so much more flavor then even greater dragonmarks. They are the dragonmarks...

^Sivis^Flavor wise I don't think anybody has grounds to argue, a normal Dragonmark is better than a Siberys any day of the week. A normal mark you can have from day 1, is an instant foot in the door to your dragonmarked house (if not automatic membership), and all of the prestige that comes long with it. Compared to a very rare, very powerful mark that you have to be one of the most powerful people in the setting before it manifests.

I don't know about you, but I would rather be low level and in the lap of civilized luxury than go through all of the total HELL an Eberron character would see before getting a high enough level to manifest a Siberys mark. Especially since if you weren't already a member of the house, you're just as likely to get whacked or put in a psuedo prison as the house quitely makes sure it controls your every move.

Now, I wouldn't go that far - while a mark is always a good start and career boost in a house, as Dragonmarked explained it's quite possible to get up high without having even a least mark.

Actually, you can get very high in Dragonmark houses without having any Dragonmark.
Case in point, the Matriarch of House Phiarlan - Elvinor Elorrenthi d'Phiarlan as shown in Dragonmarked (p.70). She's the mistres of the Demesne of Shadow, makes her home in Sharn... and has not got a mark of any sort... (Well, unless there's some errata about to come out over how they missed putting in a feat or two in her description..;) )

I think he is trying to reference the Sivis Siberys mark's Symbol of Death. Though I still don't see House Sivis marketing that in any way related to the rest of their skillset.

First off, how far one can go in a house with or without a dragonmark often depends on the house. Some put ability high enough to override prescence or lack of any dragonmarks. Others tend to restrict the highest levels only to those who are marked.

Second, not everyone who suddenly manifests a Syberis mark is some guy who now suddenly has to watch out for the house he just discovered a connection to. I am sure it is possible for a character to be associated with a house, or even a member of the dragonmarked family and not have a mark. Some of these people probably end up with Syberis marks too.

That said, the choice between the Least-Lesser-Greater chain or a Syberis mark is a matter of choice. That choice will be influenced by prestige classes, how precious feats are to the player, what the marks do, and the desired direction the player has in mind for his character. Personally, I would always take the lower marks, but that is partly influenced by the group I am in. The other DM who runs Eberron has a shortb attention span, and will have us all generating new characters before I would ever see a Syberis mark anyways. Heck, he often switches mental gears before we even see any prestige class. Although I might manage to become a Master Specialist sometime.

I've never played a character to high enough level to even contemplate getting a Siberys mark, so if the opportunity presented itself, I'd have to go for it.
