| Romulus LoneWolf03-08-07, 08:51 PM | After all, Fire doesn't count, it's a chemical reaction. They're not called "Reactionals", you know. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0423.html) |
| Darth Syntax03-08-07, 09:04 PM | Of course, by that definition, none of the classic four count. Air is an admixture of gasses Earth is an aggregate of many different minerals, compounds, and the like Water is a compound Now we're all doomed :evillaugh -- One might see the elements as states of matter water: liquid air: gas earth: solid fire: plasma -- All of that said, I would love to see a Molybdenum elemental |
| The_Robot03-08-07, 10:12 PM | Of course, by that definition, none of the classic four count. All of that said, I would love to see a Molybdenum elemental is it safe to assume then, that things like Plutonium and Uranium don't exisist in Eberron? because...if they do...:plotting::evillaugh |
| Darth Syntax03-08-07, 11:03 PM | Why wouldn't they? I would assume that physics and chemistry still work. Now finding the material in question could prove an adventure it itself. |
| jonci03-09-07, 03:28 AM | I wondered how long it would take before I see a reference to OotS's "elemental". It wasn't long. |
| KillerGM03-09-07, 04:46 AM | After all, Fire doesn't count, it's a chemical reaction. They're not called "Reactionals", you know. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0423.html) You besieged me with SCIENCE!! |
| Edymnion03-09-07, 01:07 PM | is it safe to assume then, that things like Plutonium and Uranium don't exisist in Eberron? because...if they do...:plotting::evillaughPlutonium is very rare in nature (as it's half life is only 80 million years), and generally it has to be made from Uranium. Uranium itself is common enough, you almost always find it in some quantity when you find lead, but in it's natural state it is only mildly radioactive at best, and isn't really dangerous. Heck, the best way I can drive that fact home is that in the first nuclear reactor in Oak Ridge Tennessee (just an hour or two north of me, been there several times) they would check to see if the uranium had been loaded into the reactor by OPENING THE DOOR AND LOOKING AT IT. Seriously. When the reactor wasn't running, even the refined uranium they were using was so weakly radioactive that it was perfectly safe to be around. Sure, you could make a Uranium Golem, but whats the point? What are you going to, have it follow somebody around for 20 years on the off chance they might get skin cancer from it? |
| DarkWarriorKarg03-09-07, 03:27 PM | Depleted Uranium Golem: Attacks ignore hardness and ignore armour & shield bonuses. Plutonium Elemental - Very Rare - Special attack is Vile Meteor Swarm Hydrogen Elemental - Explodes as a fireball equal to HD when exposed to flames. helium Elemental - The bane of bards everywhere. Actually less threatening than a common kobold. Prresence gives -2 to all social skills except for perform(comedy) |
| ArcTan03-09-07, 05:05 PM | is it safe to assume then, that things like Plutonium and Uranium don't exisist in Eberron? because...if they do...:plotting::evillaugh Since plutonium can only be created in any useful quantities by a nuclear reactor, I highly doubt plutonium exists in a fantasy world. |
| Meloncov03-09-07, 06:05 PM | water: liquid air: gas earth: solid fire: plasma Now I want to put my players against a strange matter elemental. |
| Darth Syntax03-09-07, 07:28 PM | Or a non-Newtonian liquid 'elemental' |
| Macrovore03-09-07, 09:06 PM | is it safe to assume then, that things like Plutonium and Uranium don't exisist in Eberron? because...if they do...:plotting::evillaugh does that mean we can have uranium swords? :D |
| Darth Syntax03-09-07, 09:42 PM | Sure, if you want a really heavy sword that isn't going to hold much of an edge. |
| Edymnion03-09-07, 10:12 PM | does that mean we can have uranium swords? :DSure, long as you don't mind that uranium is about as hard as lead. |
| Macrovore03-09-07, 11:30 PM | I was making a joke. it originally came from this thread, which turned into a big flame war. http://boards1.wizards.com/wotc_archive/index.php/t-657376 i'm not sure if that's exactly the flame-war thread, but it's similar. |
| Korhal IV03-10-07, 12:35 AM | is it safe to assume then, that things like Plutonium and Uranium don't exisist in Eberron? because...if they do...:plotting::evillaugh Fun fact: The Earth's oceans currently contain 3.5 billion tons of uranium. Then there's all the huge uranium mines in Africa, for starters, and deposits scattered around the world. Uranium is quite easy to find - it's more difficult to make it useable. |

| Bluebrush03-12-07, 09:23 PM | Sure, you could make a Uranium Golem, but whats the point? What are you going to, have it follow somebody around for 20 years on the off chance they might get skin cancer from it?Two possibilities: -One, it says something. To some it may say "I'm an idiot who wastes his time making relatively useless golems no-one wants to live next to." To others it says "I can afford to make uranium golems just to harass you. Imagine what trouble you'd be in if I really wanted you dead." -Two, make two uranium golems, have one follow your nemesis around and, when he least expects it, have the other jump onto the follower from atop a tall building. Oldest trick in the book, but gets them every time. And of course, don't forget the Plutonium Dragon from Munchkin. The only dragon to get smaller and weaker as it progresses in age categories. |
| Edymnion03-16-07, 04:58 PM | To others it says "I can afford to make uranium golems just to harass you. Imagine what trouble you'd be in if I really wanted you dead." |
| ArcTan03-17-07, 04:26 AM | After all, Fire doesn't count, it's a chemical reaction. They're not called "Reactionals", you know. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0423.html) To be fair, there were Greek philosophers who theorized that only the first three elements have a defined physical place in the world -- "spheres" of earth, air and water that make up the land, sea and sky -- while fire doesn't have a place, but represents the dynamic energy that moves from place to place through the spheres. (I.e. the first three elements are *matter* and the fourth is *energy*.) |
| ArcTan03-17-07, 04:29 AM | Depleted Uranium Golem: Attacks ignore hardness and ignore armour & shield bonuses. DU is only useful because it's very dense. It's really the fact that we can put so much kinetic energy behind it with modern weaponry that makes it useful. Otherwise it's just like very heavy lead. Plutonium Elemental - Very Rare - Special attack is Vile Meteor Swarm Enh. Hydrogen Elemental - Explodes as a fireball equal to HD when exposed to flames. Double enh. You know hydrogen is far from the only element that burns really fast, right? helium Elemental - The bane of bards everywhere. Actually less threatening than a common kobold. Prresence gives -2 to all social skills except for perform(comedy) Triple enh. The fact that helium is a cheaply available gas that's lighter than air isn't at all the most important fact about helium (and how does it make sense that standing in the same room with a helium elemental means you're inhaling huge gulps of it?). ...This is why I think these lame attempts at "chemistry jokes" are dumb. The only really funny thing about the OotS idea was the sudden and unexpected appearance of the "Titanium Elemental". Extending this gag is just painful. |
| Bluebrush03-17-07, 07:00 AM | Well before the fun is entirely drained out of this light hearted thread something this chemistry stuff reminded me of. (http://askdrscience.org/view.php?idtag=2295) |
