Upon seeing that the light of the believers had gone dim, a great demon bound beneath the ground said unto himself, “See, their light no longer shines, and my shackles have become as threads where once they were mighty chains. I shall free myself, and return to the world and subdue it for, for none remain that can oppose me.” So, we are given a warning here. It is the strength of our conviction that allows the Silver Flame to bind away the evils of the world. These people forgot this, and were lured away by the fast and easy ways of the world, they lost sight of what was truly important! And as a result, their faith faded away, releasing a great evil upon the land. Turn with me now to the 6th chapter of Turian, to see what happened next. “And though great champions and heroes of every calling did battle with the demon, it did smite them as easily as the reaper doeth reap his harvest, and they fell to the ground as stalks of grain which have been cut down. Men across the land hid their faces in fear, and the women cried out in their despair. ‘Can no one stand before this evil god? Where are the protectors of our forefathers, which did bind the beast in the ages of old? Why have they forsaken us?” So far gone were these people that they thought the Flame had abandoned them, when it was actually they who had abandoned it! Brave men and women arose to fight the demon, but without the light of the Silver Flame in their hearts, they had no chance of defeating it, and it cut them down like stalks of wheat at the harvest. Oh how the ground beneath it’s feet must have been soaked red with blood, because no force of arms could beat this demon back down to where it belongs, no! Only the faith of the true believer is an effective weapon against such creatures, as we see in chapter twelve. “And then the beast did come to the village of Sheliah, which was not wicked as were it’s neighbors, but who had kept the words of the Silver Flame close to their hearts. The demon strode upon the ground to the gates of Sheliah, and did demand that they bow down and worship it, but the people refused. Enraged, the beast did prepare to lay ruin to the town for their opposition, as it had done to Enbroch and Morrack, but held it’s anger for a moment when a small boy did dare approach it. The boy, who’s name was Turian, said unto the beast ‘Demon, I fear you not, for though you may destroy my body, my spirit is shielded by the Silver Flame, and you can claim it not.’ Emboldened by the boy’s brave words and fierce heart, the rest of his village came forward in ones and twos to defy the demon, and the light of the Silver Flame from within their hearts did shine forth. One by one, the light of each did fall upon the demon, and though no one light had the strength to subdue it, the combined light of all, working as one, did overwhelm the beast and renew it’s bonds. Knowing that it had been defeated, the demon sank back into the earth to await again the day when the light of men’s hearts would grow dim, and it could once more walk the land.” So, even in that time of darkness, there were still some who remained faithful and stood up to the beast. Others had tried that, like the villages of Enbroch and Morrack, but they tried to resist with the strength of their arms and not their hearts, so the demon just walked right over them! It wasn’t until it reached the small village of Sheliah that the pure unwavering faith of a child stopped the demon in it’s tracks. That boy was brought up right, wasn’t he? He knew that in the big picture, the demon couldn’t really hurt him. Sure, it could cause him pain and even kill him, but it couldn’t attack his soul, because he had already given it to the Silver Flame. And once you’re protected by the Silver Flame, thats it, nothing in this world or any other world can change that. You might turn your back on the Flame like the people at the beginning of this book did, but the Flame itself will never forsake you. So what happened after Turian stood up to the demon? Everybody else did too! One person standing up at the right time is all it takes to make a difference, isn’t that right? And while we don’t know if the light in their hearts really did shine out where you could see it or not, we know that it was strong enough to send that demon straight back where he belonged, am I right? But remember, he’s still down there, just waiting for a chance to come back again! Its only our continued faith and vigilance that keeps him chained up, so remember that the next time you get tempted by the world. Sure, it might be quicker and easier to do things one way, but stop and think before you go and do something, is this the RIGHT way to be doing it, or is it just the EASY way? Now I’m not saying something is evil just because it’s easy. Saying your prayers is easy, after all, but that’s definately not a bad thing, its a very good thing! I’m just saying that sometimes doing the right thing is hard, but you still have to do it! Now, turn to page 73 in your songbooks... |
