| Loki565408-13-07, 06:18 PM | Assuming House Orien (or some other organization like the Wayfarers, etc.) has the proper facilities in place to handle the request, what would be the ballpark price to teleport a party of 9 characters from Sharn to Port Verge in the Lhazaar Principalities? ADDITIONAL: The party need not teleport all together, nor does it need to be a direct teleport. Smaller groups and shorter "hops" are acceptable, as long as the whole party arrives in the shortest time allowable. |
| Artemel08-13-07, 06:39 PM | I think it was the explorer's handbook that mentioned 5000 gold from Sharn to Stormreach in Xendrik... that gives you a baseline. But... you would need to do it twice because the CL isn't high enough to take 9 characters. And it would then take like 2 days to move them all. And you have to find an Heir of Siberys. And, depending on exactly where they want to go, he may charge double because he won't have any return trip clients. (The Stormreach - Sharn is apparently almost a normal route.) And he might ask for more if it's a dangerous area. Hope this helps. |
| Loki565408-13-07, 06:57 PM | Hope this helps. It does. I'm not looking for an exact number, really. I realize its a difficult question to answer and is dependant on many variables. As the bookworm Artificer of my group, the other players tend to look to me to answer these types of questions. I'm just trying to get a sense of the costs involved before we go to the DM with it this weekend, I'm hoping to pre-solve some of the problems so he doesn't have to. i just wanted to get some Community advice before I suit up and go book diving after work. So I have your Sharn-Stormreach quote and the fact that a minimum CL teleport scroll costs 1,125gp and will cover the caster +3 for a maximum distance of 900 miles. Explorer's Handbook is the top of my "books to check when i get home" list. |
| Cavienn08-13-07, 07:08 PM | Eberron Campaign Setting lists the price of a teleport by House Orien at 10gp/mile. I would assume that covers as many people as the caster level allows. It also has a maximum range according to caster level. So ultimately, it would depend on the person you find to teleport you. You'd have to calculate the distance from Sharn to the destination, multiply that distance in miles by 10 gp, and then multiply that by the number of teleports needed to transport everyone. The Orien heir might demand more on top of that for monopolizing his time for multiple days in order to have multiple uses of teleport, plus, as mentioned above, more for less-frequently-travelled routes, or teleporting into dangerous areas. If you have an Orien house member in your group with Favoured in House, they could call in a favour to get a free use of the dragonmark, to help partially lower the cost. Or, the DM might allow a favour to forego the extra cost for danger or multiple days, if you pay the full cost for distance. See Dragonmarked for DCs for such favour checks. So, partially, it depends on the DM for what caster level of teleport you can find. Hope that helps. |
| Loki565408-13-07, 07:22 PM | Hope that helps. Yes! The other thing I need to figure out is the general distance involved using the correct map scales for the continent. |
| Artemel08-14-07, 11:01 AM | The only problem with the 10gp/mile dealio is that it is talking about the Greater mark... which is teleport, CL 10 + levels in Dragonmarked heir. So, at minimum 1000 miles and 3 people, maximum 1500 miles and 5 people. That wouldn't get you from Sharn to Stormreach (I think that's covered in the very first chapter in Explorer's Handbook.) That's why I went with the Siberys version in the earlier post. And that's only quated at 5000 gp. Which, compared to the 10gp/mile is dirt cheap. After all that 1000 mile jaunt would be 10,000 gp... and less distance than you travel on the greater teleport. Teleporting by Orien across the continent (from Sharn to Lhazaar) is about 3500 miles. That would be a lot of teleports. Even assuming a single 5th level dragonmarked heir, it would be...hmmm... 9 teleports and 5 days. -.- And a lot of money. Still, could be done. |
| Cavienn08-14-07, 12:46 PM | Fair enough. However, finding someone with a siberys mark willing to teleport you for money is probably not easy. Again, up to your DM. |
| Loki565408-14-07, 01:46 PM | Again, up to your DM. Yeah, I've been explaining to him how unfeasible it would be for a direct hop (for us or the quarry we are chasing) and that even a series of short hops would be horrendously expensive. I offered this route: Lightning Rail from Sharn to Vathirond in Thrane Teleport from Vathirond to Gatherhold in Talenta Planes* Lightning Rail to Vedykar, Karrnath Mad Dash the Orien Trade road form Vedykar to Vulyar** Lightning Rail from Vulyar to Krona Peak in the Mror Holds Teleport from Krona Peak to Tantamar, Lhazaar*** and Robert is your parent's male sibling. *About 525 miles, a much more reasonable hop. **About 220 miles, also a good place to catch up to the person we are chasing ***Again, about 525 miles. The DM says he is rethinking the whole scenario and may just go with a straight airship run. |
| Cavienn08-14-07, 02:19 PM | Ah, airships. What can't you solve? But yeah, travel in Eberron is lengthy and expensive. But it can also be fun when you start introducing chases and pirates and hijacking and battles on 30 mph lightning rail car roofs or airships thousands of feet above the ground... Erm, but don't mention those things to you DM, he might get ideas ;) |
| OctaviusIII08-16-07, 02:34 AM | You can take the Rail from Gatherhold to Vulyar - the line going to Vedykar comes out of the Mournland, at least according to the ECS (not sure if that's how it is with the poster map). That means your route is now: Lightning Rail from Sharn to Vathirond in Thrane Teleport from Vathirond to Gatherhold in Talenta Planes Lightning Rail to Krona Peak in the Mror Holds Teleport from Krona Peak to Tantamar, Lhazaar Much more manageable. According to the Explorer's Handbook, the total cost for the lightning rail would be: 84.72gp (steerage), 564.8gp (standard), or 1412gp (first class), and it'd take 3 days, 22 hours of your journey. An airship would cost 3500gp or so and take over 7 days. Sailing would be even worse. And for the fun of math, if you walked in a straight line it would be 146 days, and riding would take 103, although those are really quite bad for pricing: 73gp for rations each for walking, and 51gp for riding. For only 11.72gp more you'd be in steerage! With free food! And there in 3 days, 22 hours! Well, except the Mournlands... |
| Loki565408-16-07, 01:10 PM | You can take the Rail from Gatherhold to Vulyar - the line going to Vedykar comes out of the Mournland, at least according to the ECS (not sure if that's how it is with the poster map). Hmm, you may be right. I'll have to check out the map in the ECS. The poster map on the site (which I can't access now, thanks 4DVENTURE!) shows the breakdown. The Explorer's Handbook seemed to support the breakdown. Thanks for the heads up. Fortunately, it seems the DM is readjusting the storyline a bit (including a rewind/replay of certain events, to eliminate mistakes) and the cross-continent travel may take place differently. |
| OctaviusIII08-16-07, 08:28 PM | Do the 143 day hike! :D |
| Revvecor08-16-07, 09:00 PM | Do the 143 day hike! :D Just make sure you have plenty of coconuts:king: |
| hecknoshow08-23-07, 10:53 AM | Just make sure you have plenty of coconuts:king: HAHA, Brilliant. One thing you haven't mentioned is your final destination. If its a popular destination it may cost less than normal, maybe even have a teleportation circle that goes there. Unlikely since its a 9th level spell but you never know. |
| Gurv08-31-07, 06:14 PM | I disagree with those who have suggested that circumstances would commonly alter the price. If you were hiring a independent wizard to teleport you somewhere, then yes, the price would depend largely on what was convenient for him, what kind of risk he was willing to take, and so on. But the advantage of hiring a dragonmarked house is that they have an established system in place. 10gp per mile is a incredibly expensive way to travel. House Orien is making a lot of money no matter which way you slice it. Sure, you might run into some irritating customers (aka PCs) once in a while. But far from complaining that these PCs are using up an heir for several days, a real business is thrilled when they have guaranteed income. They'd be even more thrilled if there customers for the return trip, sure, but they'd see that as a lucky break, not a requirement. I estimate Cape Far to be about 3600 miles from Sharn. But don't forget about astral beacons when figuring the maximum distance they can cover in a "jump". There might not be a beacon at their destination, but there should be some in major cities along the way, reducing the number of jumps significantly. The variables are too numerous to be able to give a good price, which is why I think House Orien would stick with their flat rate. They might not make as much from one group of travellers as they hope to, but they'll make ten times more than expected from some others guys. |
| Wih09-18-07, 02:13 AM | My gaming group had a look through Explorer's Handbook etc, and found it insane. It ended up being easier for the party to get to Greenheart by finding some local Greensingers, persuading them to let them use a portal to Thelanis, and then go through the Twilight Demense to get to Greenheart. Then they got back from Greenheart by getting a Transport via Plants from the druids there... But then again, I suppose that's the problem is a game with a low level magic base - it's hard to find that Teleport you need, and when fast transport is hard to get (being a psuedo-medieval/gaslamp setting)... |
