Has it ever been mentioned somewhere the estimated number of surviving Cyrans? I see from Five Nations that the estimated population in Cyre around 992 YK was about 1.5 million. Not much of that could have survived the Day or Mourning.... The city of New Cyre has a population of about 4,200 and I figure not much more than that went to the other main towns Cyran Refugees fled to. So maybe someplace around 20k -30k survivors???

There were different army groups out of the borders of Cyre on the different fronts, Karrnath, Breland, Thrane, and Valenar. The navy of Cyre was quite large too and many of these ships would have not been in the Mourning, it stoped at the coast line. The one city in the south Seaside, the mist stopped at the docks and many people had ran out on to them, they lived. Then there are people that were prisioners at the time, soldiers, goblin slaves, and spies. and the battle lines and borders shifted so people of one country would find themselves on the rough side of a new border not able to move back to their homeland If you look at the old border of Cyre in the Player's Guide and the borders of the Mournland large amounts of Valenar and Darguun are made up of Cyran land. The someof the people their may still call themselves Cyrans

That said I would put the count much higher. Maybe even three times the 20,000-30,000. They just are spread out over the Khorvaire. The fact is after years under Valenar rule many of the people that were once Cyran may only see a distent link to the kingdom that was Cyre. Cyre is far more then just her people she was the wonders that the land held, remeber that Cyre was the crown jewel of the the old Empire.

About Valenar, bear in mind that the description of it's human people indicates they don't care who rules them, indicating most don't feel strongly about their Cyran heritage.

The poor never really care but if the Elves were to leave then Valenar would be a perfect place for Cyrans to flock to make a real "New Cyre" as it was part of the old.

Thanks!

But there's no sourcebook that says the exact number right? I was doing the math last night, and if my numbers were correct, fully 99% of Cyre's population died. Even at 3 times my number, that's 96% of the population of Cyre was killed. Wow.... Talk about a genicide....

There are enough survivors for whatever the DM is planning is usually my rule of thumb.

With regards to the speculated numbers of survivors: 96% of 1.5 million is death on a scale that's tough to comprehend, really. I mean, I'm not sure just what the highest casualties-per-single-event record is, but even both nukes in Japan was only something like 200k total.

Ya... but that's definitely an eye-opener to PCs who are from Cyre. I think I'll stick with the 96%... 60,000 survivors. Thanks again everyone!

Something fairly important to note, is that while the listed refugee enclaves are fairly small (e.g. New Cyre @ 4500), not all of them are mentioned.

If you consider the fact that while the permanent population of Cyre may have been 1.5M, there's a healthy amount of that population that was not present at the time. Between merchants, refugees (ie those that fled to Q'barra or the Lhazaar), military forces, etc, and probably dozens, if not hundreds of small refugee communities (pop 30-100) throughout the remainder of Khorvaire, you could very easily break the 100,000 mark.

Consider: while New Cyre is the nominal "capital" for the refugees, there's a pretty healthy number of refugees scattered throughout just the neighborhoods of Sharn! I'd even wager a possibility that Sharn actually contains more Cyran refugees than New Cyre! The difference, is that they're not nearly as concentrated (or politically unified) as the residents of New Cyre.

Agreed. There's probably a higher population of Cyrans in Sharn than in New Cyre just from people there on business or for diplomatic or educational purposes.
