| DM_Dracophile05-02-07, 07:21 AM | Is that the name of the uber-prison in Eberron? If so, where might I track down more information on the place? Thank ye |
| Fabius Maximus05-02-07, 07:55 AM | Yes, that's it's name. For more information, buy Dragon #344. |
| Syltorian05-02-07, 08:52 AM | For more information, buy Dragon #344. Really good article; I'd definetly recommend it if you want to make Dreadhold part of your campaign. Incidentally comes with a free web enhancement (http://paizo.com/dragonissues/344/DR344_Supplement.pdf) (link will open pdf). |
| Identitystolen05-02-07, 09:33 AM | There also a adventure booklet from the Mark of Heroes campaign that had the PCs break out of Dreadhold. I don't think it's available in stores, but you might find it on E-bay or something. |
| allenchan05-03-07, 02:29 AM | And I hear its also featured in the Eyes of the Lich Queen. (I hope thats not a big spoiler). Now, perhaps if someone has been able to see all three, give their opinions on which they liked best? (if the one in EotLQ is any different then Keith's) |
| Bluebrush05-03-07, 06:47 AM | I've skimmed EotLQ's and it looks pretty different. I think the KB article is better since it actually does seem like the dwarves have covered pretty much all of the bases. (And you get some information on the more incredible prisoners.) |
| ekomega05-04-07, 06:47 AM | The Dragon article prison is a fortified, nigh-impenetrable fortress. They have CR 12+ parties roaming around defending it, and all kinds of magical wards. Plus, half of the prisoners will kill you even if you set them free. I can't imagine how they didn't tone it down for EotLQ. They had to. The Dragon one is almost impossible to break into, and I like that. |

Now, perhaps if someone has been able to see all three, give their opinions on which they liked best? (if the one in EotLQ is any different then Keith's) I DMed the Mark of Heroes version. I didn't think it was very good, and definitely didn't feel as high-security as a facility run by the House of Warding should be. Plus, there was a strange warforged trap (yeah, warforged trap). The section of EotLQ that takes place in Dreadhold is a quick look at the Deep Wards. It actually goes pretty well with the DRAGON article, although I picture the Deep Wards as more isolated and lacking a hidden, underground port for ships. As usual, Keith Baker's article was great as an overview. When I ran an "Escape from Dreadhold" chapter in my campaign, I used the article. However, the slaughterstone eviscerators are VERY powerful and will quite easily annihilate any party who has had their gear stripped from them. In fact, even after they recovered their equipment from the Vaults, my PCs were unable to do much damage to one of the constructs, and had to run away. It could be possible to use all three incarnations of Dreadhold as one. For lower level characters, use the Mark of Heroes adventure. I'm not sure where you'd place the huge cavern where all the factions dwell. It might be translatable into a minimum security area like the Red Ward. For mid-level characters, you can steal directly from EotLQ or just use the adventure itself (it's pretty good, IMO). Dreadhold as envisioned by Keith Baker is pretty much inescapable by anyone who hasn't earned the title "hero" or something close it ("villain" comes to mind). Breaking out of the prison as presented in DRAGON is an endeavor for characters of no lower than 12th level. Hope that helps. |
| Salathiel05-09-07, 10:14 AM | I've had a question about Dreadhold for a while now, and this seems like as good a thread as any to ask it: How do you keep an Orien Heir in prison if he doesn't want to be there? I guess a permanent anti-magic zone would do the trick, but don't those get kinda expensive? I'm sure there's got to be a practical way of doing it, but I'm not sure what it is. -Sal. |
| Syltorian05-09-07, 10:27 AM | 1. The Lamannian manifest zone Dreadhold is built on strengthen stone and wood to such an extent that teleporting through is very, very difficult. You need to beat a very high SR (Dragon Magazine #344, p.74). 2. Turn him into a statue with flesh-to stone. Statues cannot teleport or dimension-jump away. Also saves money on upkeep. (Dragon Magazine #344, p.75). 3. Use some kind of collar or magic handcuffs that are enchanted with dimensional anchor or banish dragonmark (Dragonmarked p.149). Also, never mind expenses. Dreadhold is not for petty thieves. This is a high security prison, where you go a long way to make sure people stay there. And pay a lot to make sure they do not get out. |

In addition to all that, Dreadhold does in fact have a handful of anti-magic cells in the Deep Ward, but they wouldn't be wasted on a mere Orien heir even if he does have a chance of beating the wall's spell resistance. That's what dimensional shackles (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm#dimensionalShackles) are for. |
