| matuty7408-12-07, 09:03 PM | A friend of mine is planning to play as a Drow, but is having a bit of trouble coming up with a background story and also both of us lack any real infomation. What would be a few reasons for a Drow not to be on Xen'drik? Also, how would regular people react to on in the rest of Eberron? Finally, where would be a few places to find info on Eberron Drows? |
| mhacdebhandia08-12-07, 09:18 PM | There is good information on the drow of Eberron in Secrets of Xen'drik and, to a lesser extent, Races of Eberron. The latter book's take on drow focuses on a particular (unnamed) tribal culture which reveres Vulkoor the scorpion-god, who can be identified with the Mockery, but is unfortunately written as if this were the only drow culture there is. Secrets of Xen'drik has a better and broader take on the drow. I don't have it with me at the moment, but I'm pretty sure it mentions both the semi-civilised Sulatar firebinders and the Qaltiar, another nomadic tribal culture. The Sulatar and the Qaltiar both appear in Keith Baker's second Dreaming Dark novel, The Shattered Land, and there's a little more information on the Qaltiar in the third novel, The Gates of Night. Dragon magazine issue #330 has "Shapers of Shadow: Eberron's Umbragen", an article which describes the Umbragen drow who live under the Ring of Storms in Xen'drik. They're an old offshoot of the drow who have bound their souls as a race to a force of shadow they call the Umbra - they were a faction in the crappy real-time strategy Eberron game for the PC called Dragonshard, but Keith's article is very cool. The Explorer's Handbook mentions the Ka'ki'kur tribe who live near Pra'xirek, Lost City of the Giants. |
| mhacdebhandia08-12-07, 09:26 PM | I think that people in Khorvaire would react to a drow about the same way that English people in 1900 would have reacted to a member of an African tribe showing up in their country. People in the cities, like London or Sharn, would probably be very surprised to see such a person in the company of their fellow Britons or Breligh but would not be overtly hostile, and the further you go into the country the less welcome or accepted the foreigner would be. In some ways, I'd argue that a drow from Xen'drik would face less overt hostility in, say, Fairhaven than someone who was obviously a Karrnathi veteran - and your average resident of Stormreach probably has more against drow for having lost friends or family out in the wilderness than your average citizen of Sharn. |
| Rekko08-12-07, 10:02 PM | Watch Brotherhood of the Wolf and base your drow character on the native american named Mani. Basically, he is a tribal native american who fallowed one explorer back to his homeland and decided to serve him. Mani's tribe was slaughtered and he is the only survivor. However, your drow character need not to copy every detail of Mani's character. Your drow character could only be one of these curious drows willing to explore the world that is unknown to him. Since he knows Xen'drik, he might want to discover Khorvaire or Aerenal, as some Khorvairians want to explore Xen'drik. There would be tons of reasons why your drow character came to Khorvaire. Maybe he was captured in one of the Wayfinder's expedition and brought back to Aundair by force. Maybe he's part of some exchange between his drow tribe and the explorers or a nation, some exchange to fortify good relation. Maybe your drow was sent by your tribal elders to invistage and discover as much as you can on the newcomers that have settled in Stormreach and come from beyond the sea. Maybe your younger brother or sister was kidnapped by some explorers and you sek to find them and bring them back, or you may discover that your love ones are dead and swear revenge on the killer. An item highly precious to your tribe has been stolen and you were sent to recover it. Your tribe needs specific material to do something special, this material can only be found on Khorvaire, for exemple: Eberron dragonshards, byeshk, etc. You need to perform some task in a manifest zone that you learned was on Khorvaire. What class do you want your drow character? From which tribe does he come? How did he encounter Khorvairians for the first time, or have knowledge of some other northern continent? Rekko |
| The_Gimp08-13-07, 10:32 AM | Well if your player bases his character on the Qaltiar Drow in Keith's Shattered Land/Gates Of Night, Xu'sasar, all he needs to know, is "Kill first, ask questions later" ;) But more seriously though, almost no one in Khorvaire knows about the Drow, probably elves from Aerenal/Valenar a bunch of people who explored Xen'Drik and survived the trip and a few scholars from Morgrave or Korranberg. Daine never heard of Drows before and if my memory is correct, Lei neither (even though she knows a hell of a lot of things!). |
| eehamburg08-13-07, 01:26 PM | So ... if you never heard about a race and then suddenly one of that race shows up on the streets of your city ... how does the populace of that city react? |
| The White Sorcerer08-13-07, 01:31 PM | So ... if you never heard about a race and then suddenly one of that race shows up on the streets of your city ... how does the populace of that city react? With weird looks. Eberron is so chock full of strange creatures that an outright hostile reaction is very unlikely. It also helps that one can just claim to be an elf with black bodypaint. |
| RFrenchJr08-13-07, 01:50 PM | In my Eberron campaign I created two drow races. You have the typical Xen'Drik drow with the white tatoos worshipping their scorpion gods and what not, and you have a second traditional Underdark drow. The Underdark drow were the result of refugees from the Age of Giants taking the "Underdark Railroad" as it were to freedom. They've grown naturally accustomed to the Underdark. They worship Lolth, who is an imprisoned Rajah. In my campaign there is a drow assassin PC as well as a gnoll druid PC (whose mentor was slain and was raped by a band of chaotic drow). They have a constant tension, but are slowly growing more accustomed to one another. The party is rounded out with a shifter ranger, an elven ninja and gnomish warlock. Needless to say they get looks wherever they go, but most just excuse them as "the adventuring type" and ignore them, after double checking their coin pouch strings. |
| N3palm08-13-07, 04:06 PM | I like this idea of a drow being brought to Khorvaire by force, by the Wayfinder Foundation. That would make for a nice character, I'll have to do that sometime. |
| Nerdicus08-13-07, 07:21 PM | I play a drow beguiler in an online game and he was a drow orphan who grew up in the port city in Xendrik( I don't have any books with me). He is much more then a tribal drow. He worked as a scout for adventurers for years before finding a group he felt he should travel with. Now he lives in Sharn and uses his drow heritage to gain ifno in places like Morgrave university. He trades info on the drow for info on whatever teh group is going to be getting involved with. So far it has worked well. But yeah, not all drow need to be tribal and or savage. It is also realistic to have a drow character who grew up in sharn. His parents could have left xendrik many years ago for reasons of their own. It really depends on how creative a person wants to get with the background. |
| Rekko08-13-07, 10:47 PM | Yes, I agree that the Wayfinder kidnapping is a good background from some drow PC or NPC. Other few possibilities why a drow could be on Khorvaire: The drow was some sort of sentry/scout for some Stormreach explorers, they loved him so much they have asked him to join their party. Xen'drik Inspired are mind seeding the drow tribes to become either agents of the dreaming dark or to breed them in similar ways that they have done with the human empty vessels. Therefore, you can have Dreaming Dark drow agents that originates from Xen'drik but are sent to Khorvaire. And you have a possible 'drow vessel' to become inspired. One day, a drow was fishing. He fell in the raging sea. He somehow survived the storm, and swim back to solid ground. However, it was Khorvaire, not Xen'drik. A drow tribe wants to make contact with its cousins of Aerenal/Valenar/Phiarlan/Thuranni. Some scholars studying the Mourning (not the Mournland) think there are similarities Between the Mourning and the events that shaked Xen'drik to its core back in the Age of Giants when they were at war against the quori. Since they find dangerous to question giants, they prefer to question a drow tribe that has kept great knowledge of this time period. Lhazaar pirates captured a few drows to take the place of dead crew men. Either the drows came to love their new way of life, either they have escaped their 'slavery' and are on the run. Vol thinks that a drow lineage may be linked to her own. A drow tribe inhabiting Khyber mined many tunnels in the labyrinth under-realm. They have surfaced to hunt, but they find themselves on Khorvaire. Weird to think that Khyber can connect continents from undersea. House Cannith needs a huge Syberis dragonshard. Unfortunatly, the only one they found is a tribal heirloom and they won't leave the shard. House Cannith has duped the drow tribe that they just need to borrow it for a short time and will give it back as soon as the project is finished. The tribe accepted that their dragonshard was moved to Khorvaire, however, they send drow guards to protect the shard and assure it a safe return. Drow are at war against Breland (or any other nation) and they have some wicked naval power. They have set foot a bit West of Sharn ! Maybe they have some alliances with the sahuagins or other aquatic creature of the sea seperating the two continents. Well, I think that's enough. Rekko |
| matuty7408-13-07, 11:02 PM | Wow, thanks for all the help and ideas. |
| mhacdebhandia08-14-07, 12:06 AM | I play a drow beguiler in an online game and he was a drow orphan who grew up in the port city in Xendrik( I don't have any books with me). Stormreach. |
| yrogerg08-14-07, 12:36 AM | Keep in mind that while those Drow that live in Xen'drik worship Vulkoor, the rest of the Drow worship the Fury. |
| Nerdicus08-14-07, 01:44 AM | Zol, my drow character worships money. :$$: |
| The White Sorcerer08-14-07, 06:32 AM | Keep in mind that while those Drow that live in Xen'drik worship Vulkoor, the rest of the Drow worship the Fury. Who propably has a striking resemblance to a certain demon goddess, and is propably called Lolth by the drow. Yeah, MM4 Eberron sections = t3h fail |
| eehamburg08-14-07, 09:07 AM | Keep in mind that while those Drow that live in Xen'drik worship Vulkoor, the rest of the Drow worship the Fury. That's not true. While this statement might hold true for some it doesn't hold true for all or even most. His Infernal Bovine has stated on more than one occaission that there are many MANY different drow in Xen'Drik from some that are semi-civilized to tribal and they all worship different things and thus there is a wide variety of drow. Not just 2 (Vulkoor and Fury (lloth)). Keep this in mind. Do NOT limit yourself in your thoughts and ideas. |
| Rekko08-14-07, 09:36 AM | No doubt that there might be some drow tribe/culture/civilisation that venerates the Blood of Vol (called in another way, obviously, maybe just The Blood) since the Blood of Vol was said to originate from Xen'drik in the Age of Giants. Considering the environment they are in, God of Hunt and Beast, Jungle and Wilderness might be other good picks. Maybe some tribes venerates the lost giants that were once their masters. Maybe they revere the moons. Maybe they venerate that caterpillar they saw yesterday. Who knows... Rekko |
| The_Gimp08-14-07, 10:23 AM | Why not worship the great spirits that are in the final hunting grounds? The Qaltiar venerates Vulkoor, but how about some who venerate the great serpent or the great boar, how about more civilized Drows that live in the remnants of ancient Giant ruins, or some that worship spiders (heck why not a group that lives in Khyber?), or drows that moved to the frozen parts of Xen'Drik near Everice and are like a tribe of Eskimo's? That would be totally fubar! |
| The White Sorcerer08-14-07, 10:24 AM | That's not true. Notice the ? Your detect sarcasm spell must be faulty. |
| eehamburg08-14-07, 11:32 AM | Notice the ? Your detect sarcasm spell must be faulty. I roll a 1 on that every time  Maybe they venerate that caterpillar they saw yesterday. Who knows... ...I think I will name it Pinky ....All Praise Pinky the caterpillar! Why not worship the great spirits that are in the final hunting grounds? The Qaltiar venerates Vulkoor, but how about some who venerate the great serpent or the great boar, how about more civilized Drows that live in the remnants of ancient Giant ruins, or some that worship spiders (heck why not a group that lives in Khyber?), or drows that moved to the frozen parts of Xen'Drik near Everice and are like a tribe of Eskimo's? That would be totally fubar! Why not a tribe that worships the greatest drow of all "drizz't" ? Now ... THAT would be fubar! |
| yrogerg08-14-07, 02:59 PM | Who propably has a striking resemblance to a certain demon goddess, and is propably called Lolth by the drow. Yeah, MM4 Eberron sections = t3h fail Honestly, the thing that peeved me the most was the strong implication that *most* Drow don't live in Xen'drik. |
| Hellcow08-14-07, 08:00 PM | Why not worship the great spirits that are in the final hunting grounds? The Qaltiar venerates Vulkoor, but how about some who venerate the great serpent or the great boar... As a note, the Qaltiar specifically DO respect a host of spirits, not just Vulkoor. Check the glossary of the Gates of Night entry on the Qaltiar. Other spirits they venerate (which Xu calls on from time to time) include Hul'drac (the shifting panther, AKA displacer beast) and Kura'tra (tlixin bird). Vulkoor's swell, but there are other spirits in the wild aside from the Scorpion. |
| Hellcow08-14-07, 08:03 PM | Honestly, the thing that peeved me the most was the strong implication that *most* Drow don't live in Xen'drik. This baffles me. Obviously I haven't read the thing in question. All I can say is that I would take ANY MM suggestion with a grain of salt. There's a number of things in MM entries that directly contradict core setting material, and Dragons of Eberron takes a different path with Tiamat than what's suggested in MM IV. In my opinion, the MM suggestions are like Eberron Expanded - suggestions, but not canon. Obviously, I don't have the offical power to back that up, other than to say that there are multiple cases in which the core "I say Eberron on my spine" books contradict the MM entries, included DoE which is coming out AFTER MM IV. |
