Hey, all. I'm looking to start an Eberron campaign that has its roots in a comic book - both Hellboy and its successor, BPRD (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense). The trouble is, I'm not entirely sure where to start. By its very nature, a group like the BPRD would likely be an international effort - it would be problematic getting bogged down in red tape and bad documents while you were trying to save the world from the Seven-Headed Phlegm God or something. But there doesn't seem to really be anything like this in Eberron - none of the spy organizations would ever be multinational, and none of the dragonmarked houses really seem to have anything along these lines, a group that hunts down and usually destroys bizarre paranormal occurences.

What I would really love to have, then, are some suggestions, if possible - either on the nature of such an organization, or on the nature of the things it would face. This is an agancy that, in a place like Eberron, wouldn't face normal threats - no orc raids or single vampire attacks, it would cover the overly strange and weird. Going through the hags of Droaam to find an ancient demideity, perhaps, or travelling to Xen'drik to find the truth behind the Quori. Unique, amazing, and dangerous - with humor thrown in, if at all possible. So, any ideas? Thanks!

maybe a militant arm of the Twelve who are primarily tasked with hunting down abberant marks that threaten to reach the great powers of those at the time of the War of the mark but also deal with great erruptions of arcane power.

Or a branch of the Gatekeeper druids who deal with planar erruptions.

I think the problem here lies with the nature of the BPRD... it deals with paranomal stuff and keeps it from the public at large.

But in Eberron everyone knows there are dragons magic and demons. Not to say there aren't secrets in Eberron but usually its the bad guys with the secrets... not the good guys.

I think the problem is going to lie in your definition of paranormal. In a world where it is possible to see most anything, what do you define as normal or paranormal? The Gatekeepers exist to block the way for extraplanar threats, but would they say they fight the paranormal?

Actually, there is a house that can do this for you.
House Tharashk, with the Mark of Finding. Its mainly adventurous humans and half-orcs. Sure, they're mainly known as dragonshard diggers and bounty hunters, but they do a lot more than that, and are really the most adventurous of the Houses. They are already accepting of monstrous contacts (a Tharashk agent wouldn't bat an eye talking to a troll to get information), they're already a continent wide house, and with their unparalleled access to Dragonshards, they can build pretty much anything they want. Add to that the influence of the Gatekeepers on the House, and you've got your perfect gung-ho "lets go kick some ass" supernatural defenders.

Your team could consist of a Sahuaguin (or however you spell it), a wilder/pyromancer (the House member) and a half-fiend with a gauntlet-like symbiote.

Abe is more of a Malenti. That or make him one of those aquatic races in Stormwrack.

Liz more so would be a Kalashtar or Elan. I believe this simply because her pyrokenetic abilities are allegedly part of a entity that lives within her. An entity when removed nearly caused her to die as her life faded away. I'd say no psionic class levels save for Pyrokeneticist. I'd have her be a Ranger or Fighter who specializes with a crossbow of some sort.

Now as for Roger...I guess just a really unique Warforged. Maybe one of the prototypes in the beginning? Or a Warforged from a Xen'drik forge. Just toss in some stuff about him looking rather human-like and maybe some electricity oriented stuff.

Hans..(Or whatever his name was)...Now he's a toughy....

Possibly a Quori Mindhunter of some sort...race I'd say just for foriegness go Reidran. But, probably go along the lines the Quori inhabiting him as melded with his corporeal form in attempt to come into the real world only to reduce itself and his body into ectoplasm?

The Zombie guy...old Karnnathi soldier. Possibly, just a Corpse Creature? If not make him a human with the graveborn feats or whatever their called.

Hellboy could be a half-fiend. But, I wouldn't go anywhere along the lines of going through that entire process of template stacking. Just take a Barbazu. Take off its spell-like-abilities, beard, claw attacks, and infernal wound. Give him a higher DR and Con, one big slam attack, and ferocity.

Interesting thread. I've run a couple of sessions of what basically is a BPRD/Planetary organization based in Karrnath, and partially funded by the Covert Ministry and the Ministry of the Dead. It basically handles Cults of the Dragon Below, Planar Incursions, and monsters from the Mournland. And prevents such threats before they can spiral out of control, and endanger the nation or the peace.

I've been trying to come up with more session ideas but most seem to deal with a particular Dragon Below cultist, and attempts to unleash a Daelkyar. Our group consists of a Tiefling Warlock with amnesia and possible undefined connections to the Lords of Dust, a Warforged Knight, an Artificer archaeologist, a Dread Necromancer NPC (now deceased), a Soulblade from Adar, and an old Karrnathi Marshal. I rather like that not all the characters are directly based on persons from Hellboy.

The first session (which I ran as a pickup game) dealt with the defection of the Dread Necro who was convinced that vampires had taken control of King Kaius, and was determined to reveal the truth and save the kingdom. The rest of the group endeavored to cover this up while apprehending the fool, they tracked him cross country to Blackpit and accidently killed him after interrogating him (ahh healing the Tomb Tainted...)

Why not make it an arm of the Chamber.

You could just make the BPRD just a special wing of the Brelish government tied to tracking down and killing the big bad things that go bump in the night, that come from another plane, or just your good 'ole doomsday cults ( but I guess mainly undead and aberrations).

That's what I always kinda saw it as. I even kinda thought that Prof. Broom ( I know his name is pronounced broom, not spelled as such, but my comics elude me atm) Could instead be Boranel instead (although, he wouldn't die and turn into a toad like he did on like page 5 of the first comic, [curses the hellboy movie and its inaccurracy]).

As for the team itself.

Hellboy:
Half-Fiend Human. special, Artifact-level magic guantlet, mainly just fucnctions as a huge +1 gauntlet, despite hellboy's size, he can wield it with no penalty and in all respect it should be treated as a natural attack. Hellboy is fighter or Warblade and I kinda wanna say Artificer, just because he always seems to have the tool for the job (trinkets, charms and unused gear he's kept onto from various other jobs).

Abe:
If you've read BPRD, you'd know what abe really is, all in all, he's just a Human with the Aquatic template from stormwrack. If your going crazy-alien, mind-reading movie abe, then I guess he would be something along the lines of a Melanti. He's the sneaker of the group, i'd say Rogue mainly seems to fit Abe, perhaps even Bard or Wizard.

Liz:
Kalashtar pyro, the flame within is almost its own living thing.

Roger:
In his simplest form, a warforged. Otherwise i'd say a flesh golem with that living golem template from Savage species. Roger is a beatstick, through and through.

Johan:
Human Ghost Seer (I believe its seer or telepath). His mental powers were so great that when his body was destroyed his spirit lived on. He now uses that bubble suit to house his essence.

Capt. Daimio:
Some type of Zombie or undead, or simply a vet that has been raised from the dead. Def. a Karnnathi. Most likly a fighter or warblade with lots of white raven maneuvers. He's a strange bird, for the most part he's still just a mortal human, he even gets hurt like one, but during the black flame series, instead of seeing a medic after an injury, he simply sees a "China-man", who is obviously performing some mystic healing mumbo-jumbo. Perhaps he does just have the Tomb-Tainted Soul feat chain, I dunno, they really need to go into more detail about BPRD's new captain.

Why not make it an arm of the Chamber.

I was thinking the same thing ... a group with diverse abilities brought together by a dragon or two who believe that purging Eberron of certain "paranormal" (for want of a better word) influences is critical to the unfolding of the Draconic Prophesy.

Using the Prophesy means that any plot hook you develop always makes "sense" and is justified. The Prophesy is so complicated that not even the dragons understand the whole thing and it's the best plot device written into Eberron.

The group could be operating without general oversight by the "standard" Chamber, but still receiving help and funding when necessary.

Being associated with the Chamber automatically puts the operative above any and all law ... they'd answer to the dragons!

Of course, the law enforcement agencies in the various nations wouldn't necessarily see it that way so there could be great moments of tension when doing something "for the good of Eberron and the Prophesy" is in direct conflict with a Brelish law!

Or, for something completley different, the PCs could all be members of the Edgewalkers (Secrets of Sarlona). They're government-funded, secretive, and protect a very cosmically-ruckus country from outsiders. Unfortunately, they're the bad guys.

That could be easily made a feat, pay an action point and you "magically" have the item you need on you, only under a certain market price of course and works only for a use, or for a short time, then if it is not a consumable you just "forget" it in in your pockets again.
and Hellboy? Barbarian "I'd be the first to admit that I've no shortage of faults. But if I had to pick one [...] if would be that sometimes I get angry" (seeds of destruction) In combat Hellboy is pretty straight forward, most of the times he don't use fancy tactics, just hit things until they stop moving. when that don't works he try something else :)
(no half fiend, IMHO too much special abilities, hellboy don't even have darkvision)

Your absolutly right. In that same comic he talks about how running into a dark room isn't the smartest thing to do.

I guess in the end he would be a unique demon or devil to say the least.

Yup. I could see barbarian aswell now that you mention it. Perhaps a barbarian with the educated feat?

BTW, what do people think Rasputain would be? A warlock or a Sorcerer? I know the project ragnorok guys are all just abunch of artificers (Rupert is an artificer, not a sand mummy assassin [**** I hate that movie]).

House Jorasco. They make mad money with few material requirements; they could easily find funds for something like this.

rasputin could be a cleric of Ogdru Jahad (or a favored soul, maybe? I'm not really familiar with the class, but it sound right)
Just remember that in any Hellboy inspired campaign you should use the Incantation optional rules from unheartened arcana, so use of magic is not a limitation in the choice of class, so rasputin could even be a monk if you wanted it :) .

A division of the Dark Lanterns might be a cool idea. I had thought of running a campaign like that. I had the idea of having a group track abberrant, and devious arcane entities that threaten the crown. Going to have a lot of espionage, investigation, and horror elements. Its a cool idea. DnD kinda lends itself to this sort of gamestyle.

Granted, the group could always hunt down evil spirits and abberations. World could use a lot less of them. And they usually go bump in the night.

Since Daimio actually *is* dead-but-walking rather than simply a living person who acts in some ways like an undead, I would say Necropolitan is more appropriate than Tomb-Tainted Soul.

I think it'd be easier to incorporate this kind of concept as a secret branch of Morgrave University. The institution already has access to a fountain of information concerning the occult, has contacts in the most remote regions of the world, and regularly organizes expeditions into these locales in search of esoteric information and relics. It wouldn't be odd to see members of the faculty organizing a group to protect the people of Khorvaire against secret threats the University comes upon.

I only know hellboy from the movie, and know it to be inacurate to the real story.

How ever, i thinkt his group should represent a team brought together form across Khorvaire, possibly each selected for specific reasons. They would be exemplary individuals, each with something unique to bring to the team. now for who runs it? I think the Aurum would be great for this, they would ofcourse run the team under the auspices of some benevolent group seeking to rid the world of evil, unatural, and dimented plots. But int truth they are simply eliminating competition. Eventually the group could discover this and "go rogue" for a time, the possibilities would be endless.

In some ways i think this kind of campaign screams "epic" have the group be very good atw hat they do, but have the oponents they face be truly monstrous and beyond the ability of most of Eberron to handle.

as a final thought, perhaps Good ole Mordain calls them in to hunt down his rogue experiments...... that sounds like a great adventure hook good for at least a few nights of gaming.....:goes to scribble some notes:

I'd say Hellboy would be a Daelkyr Half-Breed. I'm not a big Hellboy reader, but Half-Breeds are touched by evil. Plus, he could get the Crawling Guantlet.

Where did you get that? It only says (from when last i've read it) was that he was dead for 3 days and just spontaneously re-animated. Can you sight a specific passage where they confirm that Daimio is actually a walking corpse?

You could be in Sarlona and have them be Edgewalkers :D

But I'd actually recommend a subfaction of the Sentinel Marshals, since they're already kinda like interpol.
