... would a group have to go to heal normally or be able to use cure spells?

That's a really good question.

I have the players waking up in an underground facility under the Mournlands. They were awakened by some Lord of Blades stooges and got in a fight with them. There was healing done in the battle though. I let it work unhindered. So either it is really far down under the Mournlands so the antihealing effect is nulliefied or it is in a Manifest Zone of Irian.

I would guess that the effect of the Mourning would dissipate only after one left Eberron itself and entered into Khyber. For the entire journey from the surface to the Dragon Below (which should probably be the Dragon Within) all healing would fail to function.

That's an awesome question! I was just thinking today on my theory as to how far above the Mournlands you would need to go, so this goes right slong with it.

the way I see it, it shouldn't be a uniform depth, since the Mourning isn't simply a physical phenomenon, but a magical one as well. So, maybe the effect is stronger in some areas (The Glowing Chasm, The Glass Plateau, Metrol) and thus the effect extends far underground.

In areas where the effect is weaker, I arbitrarily choose a distance of 100 ft underground and 300 ft above the surface. In areas of stronger effect, those distances increase. And because the Mourning effect is so chaotic, I think those distances should also ebb and flow over time.

IMHO, the deeper you go, the worse it gets. Particularly anywhere near the Glowing Chasm. Getting any closer to Kyber is probably a bad thing.

I suppose it's just as likely that the Mourning effect came out of Khyber, and thus it cannot be escaped by going under it.

That's easy. As far down as the DM says/is conveniant for him.

Or, 1 foot for every bit he hates you.

Or, "Oh, about 100 fee-OH NO! CARCASS CRAB!"

I like the idea of it being stronger in certain places underground than others. I'd say the bit someone mentioned of 300 ft. above and 100 ft., that sounds like the average area. The more potent spots I'd think it would go higher and deeper.

Then again, its always up to the DM on what actually is going on.

I'd say the entire crust is affected - Eberron through Khyber, and right up to the edge of the troposphere. As for how your party healed, perhaps the factory's unique properties provide a dampening field against the effects. Or something.

Deep enough that you'd never be able to dig that far, IMO.

Well I seem to recall that the dead gray mists have a ceiling, that is a point in the air where the mourning boundary can be found to exist much like it does on the ground...

IE fly up till you break through the mist layer (I clearly recall its effect envelopes the area with a fog/haze ceiling like cloud cover). Of course going into that mist implies the flying creature or navigator suffers the same risk of losing their way that they do when doing so on the ground. Except while flying it might cause the flying thing to mix up from down and possibly cause a nasty crash...

As for how far down can you go, I as DM would likely rule that the effect has no real limit in the downward sense... Short of coming out the other side of Eberron, the effect goes all the way to the heart of the planet... Like the planet itself has been wounded.

Indeed, that could be a fun "cure the mourning" quest in and of itself... And borrow elements from Journey to the center of the earth, using an elemental digging machine (earth elemental I guess), the PC and some artificer NPC go down to explore the deepest depths of Kyhber and find the heart of the world (some massive dragonshard boulder) and see that it is the victim of some kind of spell or attack that has dealt some kind of catastrophic but localized damage on the heart, and that damage is what caused the day of mourning and it's persistent effects :)

Kinda like Gaia as seen in many other RPG's over time, like the planet is really alive, or at least is life like, or has a soul of some kind.

So yeah, I would go with the idea that the factory has some kind of shielding... That alone could be a worthy adventure hook... IE recover the shielding so it's secrets could be plumbed and possibly find a way to make such shielding for people to use in the mourn land for various purposes.

GM caveat. The effects end where you want them to end. If I'm feeling friendly, they might find a zone where healing works properly, or at least at half strength. If I'm snarky, they're doomed. Although, yeah, being near the Glowing Chasm turns me into the Heal Nazi.

'No Healz for you!' Hee hee.
