Ok so here is the deal. My 12th level knight has recently joined the Breland nobility. The king of Breland has made me a viscount and granted me Baran's Keep and the lands surrounding.

The problem I have is I do not own a single Eberron book and do not know much about the politics in Breland. I was hoping you guys could give me a quick overview so I can live up to my character's knowledge nobility skill.

Thanks in advance,

Vargas

Sorry mate, that's copyrighted and can't be posted here. You'll have to either borrow the books from your DM or buy them. I would recommend the latter, but in the meantime your DM would be happy to let you use his to read up on your Brelish lore.

Keeping it generic:

Breland has a king. He's a war hero and much-beloved by the people. His wife was murdered by parties unknown.

His children are a collection of types unsuitable for assuming the throne (the published material is non-specific about their unsuitability but suggests they're irresponsible).

Breland also has a prime minister and parliament. They're kind of an advisory committee to the king. Some of them would like to be more than advisory, replacing the monarchy with a democracy. Some of them are even willing to go outside Breland looking for help to accomplish that goal.

Breland also has a political terrorist group agitating for democracy.

Politics in general appears to be populist. The common sentiment among the nobility appears to be "let the people govern themselves how they like, but we need to be around to decide anything really important." Making scads of money appears to be a concern as well.

So here's how I see things for your guy:

He should know how he feels about the whole democracy question. Picking sides overtly could be dangerous.

Depending on where these lands are, he could have a monster problem. Breland still claims land on the border with a Droaam and another border is with Darguun. A whole variety of monsters one way, and goblinoids in the other.

Keep the Dragonmarked Houses in mind. Cannith South is a force in the kingdom, and House Medani is "native" to Breland (they appear to be propping up the government from time to time).

Have a look at the Sharn Inquisitive articles on the D&D site; many of them are touch on politics.

I wouldn't go as far as to say they are unsuitable, but rather that the population doesn't believe that they will be able to replace their Father.

As for what your character knows, I think that the DM will have to inform you of most it, because in reality we know very little about the Nobility of Breland.

Yeah. I think we only know the names of around 3 or 4 of his kids. One's statted out in Five Nations, and another is mentioned under the Thunder Guide PrC section in Explorer's Handbook, a couple are off in Karrnath, and then the old Bear's heir is mentioned somewhere.

He's got about, 12 or more kids? Somewhere around that, not including the illegitimate ones.

A bunch. The only one that came to the forefront of my mind, though, was the one that got mauled by the king's pet. That little episode, in my mind, says a lot about the royal household of Breland.

The people genuinly like the King, they don't like any of his kids. He's only got a few years left at best.

There are plenty of people waiting for the king to die so Breland can become a democracy, though that might lead to a civil war.

Pro monarchy or pro democracy?

Which side does your character come down on? Especially now that he has a stake in it... a democratic new government could strip him of the lands and titles he's just been given (think the French Revolution). Lot of people could lose their heads.

If you do support the monarchy, and the aristocracy, how do you plan on keeping it afloat, with so many kids, and no named successor Breland could turn into a 'lil' Last War... it doesn't help that it has Drooam to the left Darguun to the right, and Thrane to the north...

Of course your DM might just keep the King alive for the durration of your game and you wont have to worry about it.

Hey here's hoping right?

I'll just kick in that King Kaius has has at least two of King Boronel's kids under his wing. Seems he started a mentoring program to help keep the peace. Or perhaps to worm his influence into every nation. DM's choice. At any rate the passing of King Boranel will not be greeted with silence from Karnnath.

It goes the other direction, too. The King of Breland has one of the Kaius' kids in his court. Ther political issue, of course, is why the King would be getting so close to someone who is basically a hostage.

Actually I thought it was Kauis III's sibling, or was it cousin.... Anyway it'd be Kauis' great grandsomething.

Anyway it was one of the few people who may have been able to notice that Kauis III isn't who he says he is and thusly was sent away before noticing.

It's Kiaus III sister Halath who lives in Wroat. She started bout shy but has become somewhat of darling of the nobility and a personal friend to the King. 5 Nations goes into detail about their relationship. And it talks about her sadness over her brothers recent mood changes but there's nothing to indicate she has a clue about the full truth. Anyway 5 Nations is what you need.

My bad. That's a rather confused family situation anyway.

I don't suppose anyone knows where to find out who his heir is. I'm running a game soon that will heavily focus on Brelish politics.
