One of the things I'm interested in trying out is having a playlist for when PCs first enter a new locale, to have it play in the background as they explore and role-play. To this end, I've kinda figured on the Valenar as having a middle-eastern theme. Loreena McKennit's "Marco Polo" really resonates with me for the Valenar. What about the rest of you? Instrumental only, or at least very little singing (or nonsense/foreign singing).
Cavienn 08-24-07, 04:54 PM	I have had extensive playlists for my D&D games for over a year now, each with a different theme: Journey, the Unknown, Civilization, Evil, Battle, etc etc. I have a huge collection of video game and movie soundtracks that I mostly draw on for those playlists. Sometimes, for major places, I'll do up special playlists. One I did just yesterday was for Sharn, since I'm running a campaign there soon. Zlam Shuffle, the theme of Zozo from FFVI was a favourite for that, along with a number of noir-type songs (though many had lyrics, which understandably you're trying to avoid and which I usually try to avoid). Leonard Cohen's Thousand Kisses Deep is one of these... Also music by The Bedouins, but they're a very obscure Canadian band I only know because one member is a family friend. One option for good Eberron music would be the Eberron soundtrack found in Sharn: City of Towers! Some great stuff in there. Looking forward to hearing what other people have for different places :)

N3palm 08-25-07, 04:06 AM	Yeah, game and especially movie soundtracks work great for this. Like, the soundtrack from The Illusionist (Phillip Glass ftw), yeah anything by Hans Zimmer like the POTC series, the Gladiator and the Last Samurai (and did you know the new Simpsons the Movie soundtrack is by him too :P). Also, you could look into blues and jazz for a lot of instrumental music (really good music too), you can find jazz with influences from any kind of music. Also on that note, I liked the stuff David Holmes did for the Oceans films too. Game soundtracks to look at are the obvious Final Fantasy ones, I liked the Gears of War soundtrack too, lot of suspence and tense atmosphere there. Also the World genre might have what you are looking for, I don't have any names, since I don't really listen to that genre much, but if you want music for the Talenta Plains or Xen'drix, music from Arabic or African origin might be what you're looking for.
JulesCARV 08-25-07, 04:26 AM	At high society balls and such, you play Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, for mounted chase scenes, play the William Tell Overture, etc. Just kidding; I know Eberron DMs are more original than that. ;) I suppose it depends on the atmosphere. Maybe we could try think of good "theme songs" for places (Arcanix, Sharn, the Mournland, Xen'drik, etc), people (Queen Aurala, Cardinal Krozen, etc), and circumstances (chases, coming upon the site of a recent tragedy, etc). I wish I had something more useful to contribute.

Moonlight Sonata should come after someone dies, or a haunted wood. I can't think anything else but there is a lot out there.
N3palm 08-25-07, 04:42 PM	It seems that the music for fantasy settings is mostly ochestra or at least live instruments. But what about the more electronic (hip hop, rock or even things like drum & bass) music styles, would they fit Eberron? Or al least some occasions in that world?
Ryuu_Tenshi 08-27-07, 12:18 PM	Some of Enya's more instrumental pieces might work (wonderful call on the Loreena McKennit, by the way. I'm also fond of Santagio, though that's better for action sequences) I can see Less than a Pearl or Watermark working for some lost and forgotten ruin, possibly something that belonged to the... the couatl based yuan-ti who'se name I can't spell. Cursum Perfico might work for somewhere... the song always makes me think of Atlantis, for some reason, so some doomed city might work. The River Sings strikes me as a thriving port city, full of people and light and laughter... Water Shows the Hidden Heart perhaps for parts of Adar. I personally also like videogame soundtracks. Sacred Moon from Kingdom Hearts II would be perfect for going through a Quori city, I think.
Subtle Knife 08-27-07, 12:28 PM	I've used a few other soundtracks not mentioned so far - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers, Princess Mononoke, Lord of the Rings, Conan the Barbarian/Destroyer, Stargate, and The 13th Warrior; I'm still trying to get my hands on the Hero soundtrack.
