| satyre07-17-07, 04:34 PM | Has anyone created or know of an Enviromental map of Eberron? I might start to work on one soon, at least one of Khorvaire (sp?) and Xen'drik. When I say Enviromental I'm talking Cold Forest, Warm Desert, Temperate Plains, Warm Forest, etc., etc.. |
| Alex_07-17-07, 05:21 PM | As far as I know, there is no enviromental map. The basic maps in the ECS show the locations of forests, deserts, plains, etc, and the descriptions of the regions gives more insight, so that would be a good start for creating such a map. In general, southern Khorvaire is tropical with muggy rainy summers and moderate winters, middle Khorvaire is temperate, and northern Khorvaire has temperate summers with colder rainy winters. IIRC from Five Nations, the weather and its patterns tends to be a subject of great interest to the people of the Five Nations. The Central Western seems largely wetter and more forested than the Central Eastern ones. The mountains seem to seperate the Demon Wastes and Q'barra from their respective regions, which could be an attempt at implying that they have some sort of micro-climate thing going on. Well not exactly "micro" but you get what I'm aiming at... right? |
| Amaril07-17-07, 05:49 PM | You mean a climate map like this (http://en.wikivisual.com/index.php/Image:Australia-climate-map_MJC01.png)? I wish we had one. Sometimes I forgot to consider climate as my players are darting around Khorvaire. |
| OctaviusIII07-17-07, 10:39 PM | What I do is imagine east-to-west winds, which would mean rainshadows on the western sides of the mountains, and ocean currents rotating clockwise in the north, counter-clockwise in the south. Then, I think about prevailing heat bands from north to south (south = warm, north = cold), and think of those bands as changing based on the winds, currents, and how the terrain changes those. For example, Eldeen Bay has a rotating current that takes a lot of cold from the rest of the Bitter Sea, which has a semi-independent current. That brings a lot of wet from the North, which explains the northern forests. That moisture is from the south, which is diverted by the Hoarfrost, Ironroot, and Endworld ranges north rather than allowing it to enter the bulk of east Khorvaire, creating the Plains and the Blade Desert. Southern Khorvaire is influenced by the northern Thunder Sea, which brings up warmth and moisture from the equater and Xen'drik. |

Sometimes I forgot to consider climate as my players are darting around Khorvaire. That's exactly what I meant. I tried tracing the Khorvaire map from the ECS but it doesn't lend itself well to that. So much for the old fashioned way. I guess I'll have to cook something up in photoshop. @Alex_: Yeah, the basic maps in the ECS show the forests, swamps, mountains, etc.. Which helps quite a bit. It is a bit more difficult to get a description from the chapter about the world. Well, not difficult, but I'm lazy. It's going to take a bit of reading on my part. Maybe we should get a list going? Here's what I have so far... Aundair: Temperate Plains Breland: Warm Forest, Warm Plains, Temperate Plains Eldeen Reaches: Temperate Forest Shadow Marches: Temperate Swamp, Temperate Forest Q'barra: Warm Forest Talenta Plains: Warm Plains, Warm Desert Zilargo: Warm Forest |
| yossarius07-24-07, 01:51 PM | I thought of this before, but forgot about it in thr crush of all the other stuff I have to do. I'm not running a game right now, so I think I'll look into doing something like this in campaign cartographer. |
| satyre07-24-07, 02:13 PM | campaign cartographer? Explain, please. :D |
| Amaril07-24-07, 02:14 PM | campaign cartographer? Explain, please. :D It's a mapping program. |
| satyre07-24-07, 04:08 PM | Wow, I just looked it up... wonder if there is a similar program for Macs? |
| yossarius07-24-07, 05:41 PM | While I'm at it, I think I'll dig out my old 1st ed wilderness survival guide to design a random weather generator based on the system in that book. Not too closely, mind you (copyright issues, after all), more like using it for inspiration. I expect I'll need help, though. Khorvaire is a big place. In a couple of days, I expect to post a preliminary map that will ask for weather facts of specific areas on the continent, so that instead of a static map (this area is temperate forest, that area is sub-tropical desert, etc), it will be a dynamic system that gives an overview of the weather year round. Incidentally, anyone care to theorize as to latitudinal coordinates of the southern and northern most points of the continent? |
