Karrlakton: [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-29-08, 04:54 PM Karrlakton is the home of my principle character in Eberron, a khoravar detective named Bastian Tierandiel. As such, I've done quite a lot of thinking about the city in an attempt to develop it into an interesting place.

The city itself has a old place of narrow winding streets, perpetual fog, and endless intrigue. Aesthetically, I imagine the city to look something like a cross between the London of Bleak House and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes combined with St. Petersburg, Russia with more than a dash of general baroque decadence. The Sentinel Tower dominates the north-western portion of the city and it is here that the houses and the richer merchants do much of their business, but there is far more to Karrlakton than the tower and the Houses.

Some Places of Interest

The Labyrinth: In the heart of the city, like some festering sore, is the area known as the Labyrinth. Here the very poorest and most desperate of people live in a tangled knot of winding streets, crazy dilapidated houses, and cold, damp squalor. Nothing is torn down in the Labyrinth and buildings seem to almost grow upon each other, like blighted barnacles.

Nine Stairs: Karrlaton is a hilly city and in more than one place great stair cases are are needed as a means of conveyance. The district known as Nine Stairs contains, unsurprisingly, nine such stair cases along which shops and houses are arranged. Nine Stairs is home to a large number of immigrants especially from the east and Sarlona (the Mror, the Riedrans, and the like). Strange goods are freely available in the markets here, and the distinct is known to play host to several dream lily dens including the slightly reputable Silver Sun.

Highgate: Located in the southeast of the city, Highgate is home to a large Cyran refugee population as well as a disproportional number of "Prophets of Doom".

Coffee Houses: Karrlakton is the home of Karrnathi coffee culture and there are a large number of coffee houses specializing in the thick, strong, dark coffee favored by Karns. The coffee houses are places of social interaction and public debate and popular among the clerks, civil servants, and other members of the professional classes.

I love it so far, I am very grateful that you shared this with me. It fits really well with my plans for the town.

I was considering giving it an extensive criminal syndicate driven by Kenkus (MM3). And a really depressed feeling as described in the ECS.

I will return with more info, NPC and such when I have statted them out.
