Lightning Rail sound [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-10-07, 02:30 PM I'm thinking up of a scene for an upcoming session, and decided on using sound-effects to enhance the feel of the moment(My players may very well be fighting on the top of the rail), and I was wondering what type of sounds Lightning Rails make.

I thought of using electric sound-effects, but it sounds very dull when heard for a long period of time.

I thought of normal train sounds...but that doesn't work either.

Thoughts?

That combined with say a semi truck would be a lightning rail.

Edit Actually while looking through youtube tesla coil vids just now I came across this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV2w883CIUc&mode=related&search=). Wait untill its better than halfway through the video, once it burns through that sparkler they hooked up to it.

Looks like they're sending pulses through it, which not only looks really cool, but it almost almost sounds like a old steam train powering up.

With this second Tesla Coil video I imagine this being how lightning rails work. Instead of the standard lightning constanly crawling all over the lightning rail, each time it hits one of the conductor stones it 'flashes' like the pulses in the second video and you get the 'flash of lightning' across the cars. You'd also get that 'whump' sound like in that video which would make it sound similar to a train.

Or you can go with the first vid and have the lightning constantly crackling across the cars.

05-10-07, 04:08 PM And of course there's soundproofing (probably with heavily sculpted Silence spells) for the first class cars. Possibly even telekinetic buffers to provide a smoother ride...
What else do you think would be in there?

05-10-07, 04:36 PM It needs to make the characteristic, rhythmic "clicking" sound a train makes as it moves from one segment of rail to the next, or in this case, as it passes from conductor stone to conductor stone... not sure how you'd do that though.

I imagine the "bramp" as a tendril of lightning reaching out to the next Conductor Stone and the "tzzt" as the trailing tendril disappearing.

Gives it a rhythmic sound reminiscent of the "choo-choo" of steam engines.
