| Incudine02-26-07, 10:13 AM | "Yeah dude, I am an half elf, man!" Hi all, please bear with me Introductory question: House Lyrandar dragonmarked members (or at least some of them) have the power to control the weather right? Can they control waves as well? (nothing drastic ok, no tsunami kind of waves) I think they do… The Idea is born: An Airship is attacked by another airship while flying over the ocean, the airship 1 is destroyed and is falling toward the sea, all the crew is killed but the captain (dragonmark of Storm) survives and manage to shipwreck on a deserted island…. Having nothing to do he sits on the shore looking for help. A single wooden door is carried by a wave to the beach…. An idea is born!! The half elf grab the door, jump on it, invoke his dragonmark so that a wave is formed behind him, rolls for a balance check… Surfing is invented in Eberron!!! After a few hours of surfing, the Half Elf reach another island, this time populated, and manages to get back to civilization. The kids on the island (non dragonmarked), seeing the half elf surfing, want to try but there are no waves today, the half elf use again his dragon mark…. Surfing is becoming popular in Eberron!!! A few years after StormHome is renown as the best Surfing paradise and holiday resort in all Khorvaire, warm climate the whole year, all possible entertainment is available, enough Dragonmarked half elf to guarantee that there are always good waves, and easy transport by airships from all over the continent. Half elves of Lyrandar practice Surf as kind of national sport, but all races can try it , as heirs of the house can summon waves for them… Some creative heir decides to try something different, using a small elemental powered boat and a rope he pulls a friend over the water balancing on a board… another invention!!! Wakeboarding!!! Waterskiing!!! A joined venture with House Ghallanda and Lyrandar is created and rich people from all over the world can now enjoy Surfing Holiday Packages (travel by airship, food and accommodation, water sports activities) at discounted rates (ok, relatively discounted) Surfing becomes a business!! $$$$ Somehow I started to imagine StormHome in a whole different way: People on the beach, enjoying the sun between surfing, a band is playing Roots Reggae, Ska and Surf rock, little Halfling are serving cocktails and beers to clients on the beach, Half elves with sun bleached hair (some with dreadlocks) are teaching how to stand on a board to Karnathi girls on a spring break :o) |
| UnderworldLord02-26-07, 11:00 AM | While I wouldn't make it Stormhome, as that is supposed to be a business center, that would be an awesome idea. Perhaps a mutual point where ghalladra and lyrandar have set a place. Lyrandar is making waves, Ghallandra is serving Drinks, Cannith is making boards... sounds like some attept at a peaceful venture by the twelves to create an amusement park. Vadalis pony rides [and I can see them coaxing a magebred dolphin into some cool tricks], and an Orien Roller Coaster maybe? A hanful of healers on hand for accidents. Kundark security measures keep it safe, with Deneith mercenaries on standby to make sure no attacks occur. The only problems I forsee is that the house[s] of shadow tend to take the entertainment buisness, and that if there are twelve dragonmarks running a fair, then their are probably some high end costs. But then, the Shadowmarked could have a large circus set up there, and since its financed by the twelve itself, it might not be that bad. Not sure how to fit in the house of finding yet... in the case you lose your child there? :) |

Perhaps a mutual point where Ghallanda and Lyrandar have set a place. I hate to correct you, UL, but that "mutual point" really would be Stormhome. On page 51 of Dragonmarked it says that Lyrandar's magic has pretty much turned the semi-arctic island into a "paradise," and that there are several Ghallanda resorts on the island now. If we're going to have surfer dudes anywhere on Eberron, Incudine's original location would be it. |
| UnderworldLord02-26-07, 11:29 AM | Unfortunately, I don't have D'marked, so I guess my view of it as being a more somber buisness place wouldn't apply. *shrugs* Okay then. |
| Incudine02-26-07, 12:06 PM | Some other ideas: Surfing Surfing require a balance check of 10+ wave height in feet (Ex. 20 feet wave DC 30) “Professional” Surf manoeuvres Require a Tumble Check to do the manoeuvre and a Balance check with a DC equal to the Tumble check to “land it” Here are some items, (I am Cr*p at creating and balancing items/ costs, please feel free to do it :o) Cannith Surfboard +X to balance skill check for surfing QuickSteel Surfing gear (Wet-Suit) Keep you warm in the water and helps you float when you fall in the water (+X Swim check to avoid drowning) “Chawabunga!!” International surfing competition Held in Stormhome every year, surfers from around khorvaire gather to watch the best of them compete, the name was once shouted by a surfer that disappeared under a wave, never to resurface again, since then it has stuck. Surfers have 4 runs each (one run is 10 rounds) to try to impress the judges, waves bigger than usual are summoned (15 feet), each surfer roll each round to stay on the board, each round they can try a manoeuvre, the higher the check the highest the score, judges add up the three highest scores of the 4 runs, to get the final result. If a contestant falls that is the end of the run. A special event is run where a gigantic wave is summoned (said to be the same size of the one that killed the surfer that gave the name to the competition) and surfers can try to ride it,…. In the history of the competition no one has ever managed to do it and often ended up dead or injured (if lucky) but every year at least one foolish surfer tries to beat the wave. (Maybe using the Tsunami spell from the Spell Compendium??) Balance DC= 50 (40 ft high wave). If the surfer falls in the water, he takes 10d6 of non lethal damage (no save), and must make a Swim check of 30 in order to fight the underwater currents and resurface. |
| UnderworldLord02-26-07, 12:25 PM | So... whats the prize if a PC wins? Also: this is noir, so we need some plot hooks involving this surfer. |
| Incudine02-26-07, 12:32 PM | A band of Lyrandar surfers disguised as the 5 Kings/queens of Galifar are robbing banks around Khorvaire, will the Deneith Sentinel marshal sent to infltrate the surfers manage to arrest them?? :) |
| Romulus LoneWolf02-26-07, 06:39 PM | Great... Now I'm picturing the members of House Lyrandar speaking with a Californian accent.. "I'm High on Life! Stormhome is the best, fer shyur..." |
| goblin_pride02-26-07, 07:27 PM | Great, now I can't get the song Barbara Ann out of my head..... |
| sooperspook02-27-07, 02:54 AM | "Round, round, round, I get around..." - snippet of song by a group of half-elven bards. |
| JeckAndon02-27-07, 08:36 PM | I love the idea but would the dragonmarked members of house Lyrander and their wave controling powers be seperate dragonmarks or would they be side effect powers of having a dragonmark. Also how powerful would the wave controling power be, for instance could a lesser dragonmarked character summon up to a 10 or 15 foot wave? |
| Rikku03-01-07, 07:54 PM | I agree with the post above. |
