| Cazgal03-08-07, 10:05 AM | Hi all Is there anywhere some better, printable maps (than are in the Sharn CoT book) that I give out to PCs ... a 3D map would bb great or something like that ? Has anyone created one ? Or does / can anyone tell me if there is one online anywhere ? Thx |
| The_Robot03-08-07, 07:33 PM | there was a poster here who was working on an interactive 3D map of Sharn. don't know whatever to happened to the project, and with no search function it may be difficult to find. check the archives in this section and maybe the Eberron General section? edit: other than that, i can't recall ever seeing any other maps of Sharn besides the one in S:CoT. sorry. i usually just wing it for my players when they leave their neighborhood (see: map provided on the last page, lower right hand corner is the Broken Anvil, which has become their regular joint.) |
| Seghan03-08-07, 11:55 PM | There is some info in Sharn Maps Help, inlcuding somebody who was talking about a 3D map. |
| Cazgal03-09-07, 03:25 PM | Thx for that :) I am finding interpretting the maps quite hard going atm ... how they all interlink and how the vertical bits work - i.e. when you go up levels from lower to middle or middle to upper is that all within the towers (i.e walkways that run inside towers) or mostly lifts on the outside etc. Or do you just make it up as you go along. Finding it quite hard picturing the city in the vertical aspects - not quite sure why - any tips on this visualisation ? And looking at the lower ward maps there are no defined towers etc - just a lot of shaded in areas - is this because the building etc all merge into one like in the "foundations". I am trying to work out if the towers are basically like medieval shopping complexes where lots of smaller shops congregate all under one roof - external walkways linking to other "towers" i.e. other shopping complexes/living areas etc. is this right ? Any help would be great :) |
| AvonRekaes03-09-07, 03:31 PM | In lower and middle sections of this city, yeah, you get a lot of the "shopping complexes", where most of the city is inside the towers and storefronts and homes are built into the plaza (like at a mall). Also, starting in middle and into the upper sections of the city, you get a lot more bridge traffic. Bridges become wide and might have buildings built onto the sides of them, like a normal street (except the buildings' "back yards" are empty air). Finally, Skyway is like a normal town: relatively flat. There's just a bunch of cloud-stuff forming parks and lawns and stuff. |
| Cazgal03-09-07, 03:40 PM | Phew ! Thank goodness for that - cos that is how I was seeing the ciy. It is very complicated thou - what do the PCs make of it ? Is it half the fun that theyhave no idea where they are and what the city is like or do you find it is frrustrating ? |
| AvonRekaes03-09-07, 03:45 PM | Well the current Sharn game I'm running takes place mostly in lower wards, so I just construct the map as a tightly packed jumble of buildings and say thats what the current level of the tower they're in is like. When they get into trouble in higher wards, I usually just place them on a bridge or a (very) wide balcony off the side of a tower, to enforce the mile-high altitude (and to give opportunity for someone to be knocked off the edge). As a practice, I only draw the area surrounding the PCs once battle starts. I just stick with descriptions otherwise. Also, if you're playing online, I highly recommend the Gametable (http://gametable.galactanet.com/) program. It's what I use. |
| Cazgal03-09-07, 04:03 PM | The game will be tabletop when I start it .... Think I will blow up the maps from the CoT book and then fill in the bits I need. Any suggestions as to the best wards to start in ? Was going to start in and amongst Callestan, Precarious and the Waterfront districts - not a great huge area to start with so the PCs can get use to what the lay of the land is like and enough for the to get their teeth into. Hopefully I can keep them in and around these areas for a good few levels - while we all get use to the City. Looks like from the map that just about all of the Lower Wards are inside with very little if any outdoor space/bridges and that this only really happenes higher up .... guess that is what the rich and well of get :0 Space and fresh air whilst the PCs can cope with dank and murky streets. Last thing while I think about it - how does the Cogs and the under the Lower Ward bits fit in - there again the individual tower structures appear to be seen ...... rather than a rambling of buildings close to one another. |
| AvonRekaes03-09-07, 04:31 PM | I'm not too certain where Precarious is, but Callestan is especially lawless. There's a lot of trouble the PCs can get into there. Drug deals, gang wars, theft, etc. etc. etc., all without the vigilant eye of the Watch. The Waterfrotn districts are nearly as bad. Cliffside is pretty seedy, but the legitimate business trade going through the area ensures that there are Watch patrols and safer areas than in Callestan. As a base of operations for your PCs, if they aren't all outlaws, would likely be better put somewhere in Middle Dura. Gruff, dark, but with some measure of protection from the law. They can venture forth into the lower wards while having some place to return to in relative safety. |
| Pawndream03-10-07, 01:13 AM | There was a pretty good thread some time back describing different posters interpretation of how the city would be laid out. I think it got flushed (or archived though) Sharn Demographics might have been the thread title. At any rate, it's probably best not to worry too much about how the streets all fit together. Just use broad general descriptions of travel as PC's travel from one ward to another, and don't worry about tracking movement across squares as they do so. Let the players imagination run wild as to how the city might be put together. When it comes time where tactical movement is necessary, just draw something up that suits your needs at the time. Only focus on what is absolutely necessary to run the encounter. Oh, in case anyone is interested, I created these maps to correct the error of those in S:CoT. I also broke down the city districts a bit more logically (to my mind) than having districts run through towers and whatnot. I will post links in case anyone wants them. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v161/Pawndream/UpperWardsandDistricts.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v161/Pawndream/MiddleWardsandDistricts.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v161/Pawndream/LowerWardsandDistricts.jpg *Note that these maps are slightly different than those presented in S:CoT. I added skybridges between wards (per discussion on these forums and input from Keith Baker) as well as horizontal lift locations (denoted by black dotted lines between wards). In Case you are wondering what names I gave the bridges: A - Blackgate Bridge B - Dragonlight Bridge C - Granitehall Bridge D - Olladra's Light Bridge E - Boldrei's Bridge F - Market-hearth Bridge G - North Market Bridge H -Sovereign-hold Bridge I - Tavick-hold Bridge J - Sovereign-market Bridge K - Dragonbright Bridge L - Cassan Bridge M - Barrington Bridge N - Deathsgate Bridge O - Morgrave Bridge P - Griffon's Bridge Q - Platinum Heights Bridge R - Crystal Bridge S - Silvergate Bridge T - Ocean View Bridge |
