| heirodule08-08-07, 03:11 PM | I'm trying to develop this for my XE game. The Skarn and Rilkans are supposed to be there, but I'm also trying to play up the idea that nobody really knows about the skarn or incarnum. In XE, the skarn are playable, but it seems that the Skarn observed so far are from the continent of Xen'drik itself. I'm assuming they are splitters from main Skarn society and do not share all of their island sibs characteristics I'm assuming the Skarn are highly xenophobic and arrogant. Also that they've enslaved anyone setting foot on the island in the past, which explains why nobody knows about them. So drow, goblin, human and rilkan slaves, but a rilkan freedom underground, perhaps composed of exiles on the smaller islands. Any thoughts on Skarn Dhakaan Empire relations? They probably contacted them in the past. Maybe they became insular after contact? Anything else interesting on Kapaerian island? The PCs are traveling to Kapaerian island at the behest of a stormlord to conduct trade negotiations. |

| heirodule08-09-07, 11:37 AM | can you help by stating what the skarn and the rilkans are?Races from magic of Incarnum. They are both descendants of the mysterious mishtai, though now divided. Minor reptilian features. Base race has minor incarnum wielding benefits. The Skarn get to lawfully align their arm-spines, and the Rilkans can get knowledge check benefits. Players Guide to Eberron puts them on Kapaerian island, if used. |
| heirodule08-11-07, 05:50 PM | here's what I came up with Knowledge Geography: DC 10: Kapaerian Island is a series of large islands to the west of the Xen'drik's Skyfall Peninsula. The main island is dominated by a race of fierce isolationist humanoids, and none dares to contact them. DC 15: The largest island has some volcanic activity in the north. The island also shows evidence of giant ruins, similar to those found in Xen'drik jungles. None of the smaller islands are inhabited by sentient beings. DC 20: The race of the Kapaerian Islands is known as the Skarn. An airship sent to survey the larger island observed three medium-sized towns and a few smaller habitations. The architecture in these towns was impressive, and eerily beautiful. It is unique, not reflective of known Giant styles or other human architecture. DC 25: The Skarn are rumored to be related to dragons or some kind of reptilian beings. They are exceedingly xenophobic and arrogant. Pre-War, some contacts were made, but the war turned the Skarns even more inward, and now anyone setting foot on Kapaerian Island is considered subject to their rule. Three known recent expeditions have never returned. DC 30: The Kapaerian Islands used to be part of the mainland of Xen'drik, before the fall of the giant civilization when vast swathes went under the waves. RESEARCH. The research feat can discover the report of the Airship, the Calliope, DC 20 sent under direction of house Lyrandar. They were driven off by attacks from the ground, some kind of strange energy. DC 25: The largest of the towns seemed to house about 5000 people. There was a large central elite structure, surrounded by a plaza and flanked by some kind of amphitheater. DC 30: The reason for Lyrandar traveling to Kapaerian island is obscure. They seem to have done it at the behest of an anonymous patron. |
| heirodule08-11-07, 05:52 PM | Knowledge Local DC 15: Skarn are humanoids about which very little is known. On average, they are stronger than humans though less lithe. They keep to themselves and reveal little about their origins. DC 18: Skarn have a small but highly ordered group of town-states in the jungles of the Western Skyfall peninsula. Little is known about Skarn society, since no one has returned from visits to Kapaerian island. They would seem to be insular and arrogant. Skarns are a humanoid race with reptilian traits. They have sharp spines protruding from their forearms, which can act as weapons. DC 20: Skarn culture is orderly, and focused on achieving “perfection of form”, involving physical and mental training and focus. Skarns are also known to have a colony within the jungles of Xen'drik. These skarn seem to have left behind the ways of Islands, and occasionally come into Xen'drik. They have the same strange magical tradition and ideal of perfection, but they seem less arrogant about it. RESEARCH: Ohnal Caldyn's papers and note about his time observing the Skarn are available for study DC 15: The Skarn are highly lawful, exemplifying the concept in a way similar to the way planar creatures are ordered via alignment. They have seemingly equal tendencies to hold high moral standards as low. DC 25: Their highly ordered existence and their pursuit of “perfection of form” lend their interactions to some of the clearest and most strong prophetic indicators. DC 28: Their social order involved an underclass of “indentured servants” or even slaves. The Skarn have rejected that former lifestyle in coming here, and do not talk of it openly. They worry that their divisions might lead to the fall of their civilization. DC 30: Their connection to incarnum implies they could have a connection to any kind of soul imaginable, which would imply draconic, couatl, or even fiendish powers might be at play in their existence |
| heirodule08-11-07, 05:53 PM | Knowledge History DC 10: little is known about the Skarn, or their history. They make claims of a civilization dating back to the time of the Giants, if not further. DC 15: Skarn of the Skyfall peninsula speak of the Mishtai, a progenitor race of the Skarn, who were connected to dragons, or perhaps a kind of extinct dragon. DC 18: The mishtai sought “perfection of form”, a spiritual and physical destination. The Skarn carry on this same tradition DC 20: The Skarn seem to have records that back up their claims of a long-running civilization dating back to the giants. DC 25: This is unheard of. Every attempt to establish a widespread civilization since the fall of the giants has met with failure eventually. RESEARCH Dc 25: Secondary references in texts are made to relations the Skarn had with the Dhakaan empire. All primary references seem to have been lost with the fall of that empire to the Dalkyr DC 30: It would seem the Dhakaan Empire tried to assert dominance over the Kapaerian islands, but met with great resistance. It is conjectured by some that their experiences with the goblins contribute to their isolationism. DC 35: Or there may have been more mutual exchange than the surface would indicate. |
