I do not know whether this has ever been discussed, but what are the warriors of the Tairnadal actually fighting when they are home, in the steppes of Aerenal?

The wars against the dragons have been over for a while, and there is no convenient war going on between other nations there. They are an island, so there is little opportunity to raid anyone else, either; while some speak to bring war to Xen'drik or Argonessen, few seem to actually do anything about that. The area also seems not all that large for a wide variety of monsters to survive the Tairnadal zeal of killing everything that appears to be a challenge for several millennia.

I understand that the opportunity to get into a real fight was what made so many of them answer the call for help from Queen Mishann, but still, to become such great warriors they must be getting some actual practice and experience back home. They don't seem too busy trying to kill each other, either; a few ancestral feuds apart.

So, does anyone have any ideas that would make for a good PC/NPC character background, a campaign, or pure and simple flavour?

They fight monsters in the jungle, mostly. They also engage in ritualized warfare amongst themselves, where they don't pull punches but have most downed warriors treated before they can die.

I'm pretty sure that's unofficial, but it's what Keith Baker has suggested.

It's only mentioned in the ECS but there are actually three groups of Tairandal. The Vales Tariandal who mostly migrated to Korvaire. And there are two others whose name escapes me at the moment. One of them wants to continue the war against the dragons and the other wants to return to Xen'Drik to recover their lost heritage.

Thanks a lot! That's exactly what I was looking for!

Strangely enough, neither of those seem to have actually done anything about their ideals - that we know of, at least.

No major attacks have been led against the Dragons since the big war (and even there, the elves seem to have been mostly on the defensive); though the upcoming Dragons of Eberron might have more on that. Also, there is no Tairnadal colony that we know of in Xen'drik (unlike the one they had in Khorvaire during the Dhakaani empire).
