09-16-07, 12:13 PM I'm looking for input and suggestions on the Blood of Vol in Stormreach (though I'm certain this will be covered in the future in Stormreach: City of Dungeons).

The BoV is banned in Karnnath, and viewed with suspicion throughout most of the Five Nations. Yet my impression from reading SoX and other source materials (FoEb and ECS) is that Stormreach is a bit unruly, like the Wild West, and that it is quite possible that the BoV's rituals would be practiced openly in a temple in Stormreach, especially since some scholars believe that the religion shares some things in common with the Qabalrain. (After all, the Sov. Host temple is of the draonic sect.)

Has anyone thought about this issue? Would the BoV have an open, active temple in Stormreach? I'm inclined to say yes (especially since the faith focuses on the divine within, a tenet that would find favor among explorers). How much support would such a temple have from the Stormlords? Thanks.

The BoV is not really banned anywhere. It's no longer the official religion of Karrnath, but it isn't illegal, and followers still represent a significant minority of the population, with open followers in various positions of power. There are temples all over Karrnath, and in many of the larger cities in the rest of central Khorvaire.

I don't have Secrets of Xen'drik, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were a Blood of Vol temple in the city. It has temples of all the other major faiths in Khorvaire, and after the Host and Flame, the Blood is the most widely practiced faith.

How the temple would be viewed would depend on the purpose you want it to serve or the vibe you want it to give off. Personally, I'd imagine many Lhazzar sailors in the region, and the BoV is common in that region, so there'd be plenty of people tolerant of the faith, if not open practitioners. I would also imagine that the local leader would be interested in finding secrets of the Giant and Elven cults there that laid the foundation for the modern Blood of Vol faith. I wouldn't be surprised if they and the Emerald Claw used some more questionable methods including killing adventurers and stealing their finds, paying off officials to cover their tracks, and other badguy stuff.

Yes, I realize that the BoV isn't entirely banned, but it certainly seems to be a taboo faith in terms of operating large-scale temples (save the temple in Atur). I didn't even think about Lhazaarians; that seems like as good a reason as any to have a temple in Stormreach (SoX doesn't include a temple to the Blood).

The reason I ask is because I've decided that in my campaign, one of the Stormlords is an adherent of the BoV (as per SoX suggestion). Basically, I'm trying to figure out how open the Stormlord is with his faith. Does he visit the temple regularly or in private? Does he personally sponsor events to raise funds for the faith? What do the other Stormlords think of all this (esp. if he has ties to OoEC)? Anyway, that's why I was asking....

Yes.

Not much. Even if one of the Storm Lords is a seeker, the others aren't and he/she keeps his/her faith to him/herself.

At least, that's the five-month City of Stormreach preview. You're free as always to handle things differently in your campaign. ;)

Thanks for the response, Hellcow. I was hoping that you would weigh in on this topic. May I press my luck and ask if we can expect to see anything more concerning the Draconic sects of the Sov. Host in Stormreach? I was disappointed that the sect wasn't covered in detail in Faiths of Eberron...

Given that the book is so far away, I honestly can't tell you; there's still time for things to shift around in editing and development. However, given the mention of the draconists in both SoX and The Shattered Land, it seems like a logical subject to be addressed in Stormreach.

Beyond that, you'll also want to check out Dragons of Eberron, which does at least discuss the true DRACONIC opinion of the Sovereigns...

This far from publication, all I can safely say is "Maybe." I won't know anything for certain until it's through editing and development.

And just to clarify, SoX actually says "Here are four coin lords, here are five backgrounds for coin lords - match them as you see fit". The Harbor Lord isn't in question, and the identities of the Coin Lords aren't in question... simply the secrets they are hiding.

Minor distinction, but the point is that the identities of the five Storm Lords are fixed in canon... it's whether one of them is aligned with the Emerald Claw (and if so, which one) that's in your hands.
