survival, healing, treasure,
in cryre----what do we have? what can i do, what can i find?

i need to give suggestions to my dm

what might i find at the explosions epi-center, where would that be anyway? i'm looking for anwsers in the campagin.

idea i'm picthing is when we get to the inner working of a cryre city or vault while exploring- searching for the cause of the day of mourning. the party runs into a group of elves on their own mission. what that is, i could use suggestions.

the elf group is made up of a beguiler13, a wizard8/war weaver5, and a ranger/rogue/mix-dread commando5 a pretty nasty combo of characters especially with a few dammage spounges to slow down the battle.

need to give them an entourage maybe hired lower lev warforged any other ideas please suggestions

treasure: one of my goals is to find a darrens instant fortress, an item noone in eberon has the cl to make...

The Headquarters of House Cannith was in Cyre. This is the Holy Grail of treasure hunters in the Mourning. What more needs to be said? Their vaults could contain pretty much any magical item you want. Either because some great artificer of the past made it or Cannith procured it (such as a relic from Xendrik) to study and attempt to reproduce.

These elves can simply be rival treasure hunters.

Not only House Cannith. House Phiarlan and it's priceless treasures was located there. AND the greatest vaults of House Kundarak were located in Cyre (which was the economic and cultural center of Galifar). I would suspect that many of the great treasures of the Sovreign Host could be found in the Mists, as well as those of ancient noble houses.

Basically, anything you want could be found in Cyre--and there are people who want to get those things out.....

Where did you read that about Kundarak? Dragonmarked says their greatest vaults are in their HQ... in the Mror Holds.

Of course their greatest vaults are in Mror. But perhaps their greatest ones were in Cyre... again, like i said, Cyre was the economic and cultural center of Galifar. The richest and most interesting people are going to want their goods stored nearby.

Moreover, the more recent stuff is going to be in Cyre--the nice stuff from Cannith and Phiarlan, Cyre's more interesting weapons... Cyre is the place to go to storm Kundarak's vaults.

I don't see it. Their best vaults will be where they are most powerful which is going to be their ancestral home and HQ. There's nothing written anywhere to suggest Kundarak had the BEST stuff there. Why would the proud Dwarves put their best vaults in Cyre just because it was the richest of the 5N? Mror Holds isn't exactly poor. Makes no sense. All the houses have their best stuff in their HQ which is in the place where they were founded.

Goods stored nearby? Have you not read anything on how Kundarak Vaults work? They have limited teleportation abilities to address this issue. And I'd think most people would prefer the best protection money can buy rather than it being nearby.

Still there were major enclaves there that anyone would be happy to loot but the sourcebooks have so far showed the biggest target is the Cannith HQ. There was stuff there you might not find anywhere else in Khorvaire.

In a way, the Mror Holds aren't exactly the safest place for Kundaraks to stash the profits of their business, beeing in conflict for a while now, caught in distrust and jealousy of those who bear a mark. And secondly, the banking and safeguarding business of the house is more tied to Khorvairen society as a whole than just to the dwarves. While it looks like the most logical choice to have their richest holdings on home grounds, when economics come into play, there's also a lot of logic to locate the heart of your empire where the most blood is circulating, so Cyre would make a plausible choice.

It wouldn't be the first, eh? House Phiarlan and Thuranni aren't exactly on "home grounds" with their institutions either, so aren't the halflings.

Anyway, Yakman does make sense and has a point. Just because it's not written anywhere doesn't mean it's impossible, and his conclusion is as good as yours. They both work.

Just because the biggest target the sourcebooks name is the Cannith hold, this should not imply everything else is false (damn dogmatic following of sourcebook text >_> )

Someone help me out, is it actually official that one was dealing with an "explosion" that has an epicentre in the mundane sense? I dunno, maybe the source is actually not in the "middle" of things, but rather somewhere off in a corner, where no one might expect it....

Yeah and Cyre was fighting a war on all fronts. Protecting stuff is kind of what Kundarak does. And in the Mror Holds Kundarak holds a LOT of power. Dragonmarked makes that very clear.

And secondly, the banking and safeguarding business of the house is more tied to Khorvairen society as a whole than just to the dwarves.
? The Kundarak clan have always been protectors and wardens. This is theorized to be why they developed the Mark of Warding in the first place. They fulfilled the role of bankers, neutral parties and protectors among the dwarves before they were ever part of the 5N.

While it looks like the most logical choice to have their richest holdings on home grounds, when economics come into play, there's also a lot of logic to locate the heart of your empire where the most blood is circulating, so Cyre would make a plausible choice.
It makes sense to have banks and vaults in Cyre of course. As I said obviously there would have been a major enclave in Metrol. But their HQ is in the Mror Holds and their HQ is obviously their biggest and baddest vault. It's said to be easily on level with a fortress. And when the rich people using your vault can use the lightning rail, airships, Orien teleportation, and your banks can teleport goods between them location becomes less important.

You want to talk economics and politics. The Mror Holds used to be part of KARNATH. So there's more of an argument for their best vault to be in Karnath than Cyre,

It wouldn't be the first, eh? House Phiarlan and Thuranni aren't exactly on "home grounds" with their institutions either, so aren't the halflings.
Yes and there's very good reasons for that and that's been detailed. Haven't heard anything about a Kundarak split.

Anyway, Yakman does make sense and has a point.
It does NOT make sense.

Just because it's not written anywhere doesn't mean it's impossible, and his conclusion is as good as yours. They both work.
It's not as good as mine. Mine follows logic and the sourcebooks. Of course you can always change things but let's try to remember the request of the OP. He is bringing this to his DM. What will serve him best is canon he can bring to his DM not wild theories cooked up by posters on the board.

Just because the biggest target the sourcebooks name is the Cannith hold, this should not imply everything else is false (damn dogmatic following of sourcebook text >_> )
1) Try to actually read what I wrote. I never said Cannith HQ is the SOLE target of any scavenger. Obviously there are whole cities of valuables out in the Mournland and there ARE vaults from Kundarak. They had major enclaves in Cyre. But the biggest target is Cannith HQ because it was their freaking HQ! And every house has their best stuff at their HQ.

2) I'm not slavishly devoted to canon. Wonderful strawman. I think people are just forgetting what started this whole topic. The OP needed to know what's OFFICIALLY in there to do he can bring to his DM. I never said you can't Rule Zero.

Someone help me out, is it actually official that one was dealing with an "explosion" that has an epicentre in the mundane sense? I dunno, maybe the source is actually not in the "middle" of things, but rather somewhere off in a corner, where no one might expect it....

No there's not much that's official on the Mournland. No one that could have really seen what happened survived. Some say the gas merely started expanding from the center of Cyre. Others say from Metrol. Etc. Some say where the glass plateau is there was an explosion and the mists followed, flowing from it.

Orien teleportation, and your banks can teleport goods between them location becomes less important.
I'll have to give you that one. Didn't even remotely think of the latter there.

Anyway, don't wanna go into quote-war on the rest, just as much, on the official side, you're absolutely right. I personally don't think the need of "suggestions" only restricts to the facts though, and the Mournland is, well, pretty much a twilight-zone canon-wise. I think wild guesses and long shots are as legitimate there as are just the facts, but that might just be me.

Well, whatever, sorry if it got to you, my stupid canon-worship-remark. For that, I apologize, dunno, maybe it's a reflex, happens from time to time when people just go and call stuff by the books only. Happens to be annoying now and then.

Still, while I suppose your reasoning explains a very frontmost and first choice, that doesn't have to mean it's the only reasonable thing once you dig out a number of other factors here and there. But yeah, by the book, you are correct. Maybe I'm just too much of "when someone is right, the other one doesn't have to be wrong".

Ah well, guess that's just slipping away from the topic and worth a discussion in its own right (or not, who knows).

Coming back to edgewraith's list, living spells might be an element to consider, right? Dealing with a very nasty living spell or actually catching one could make for an interesting encounter, goal or hassle.
Furthermore, dealing on the topics of manifestion zones and related magic effects, one could go and try to find an explaination for the mourning within, uhm, the normal mechanics, so to say (for those who don't like enigmas).

Ideally, I personally would go a little x-files on that one. You know, like, dozens of various mysterious threads that look like something but make no sense in the end anyway? (okay, maybe some x-files fan will kill me for that statement, but I never managed to follow the threads because as soon as one question was answered, it was somehow turned upside down the next day.)

Thing is, maybe go 3-way and try 3 very different, but all in the same possible ways to pursue for the Mourning - and in the end, deliver another piece of evidence that makes all 3 possibilities go poof in thin air, and thus keep the mystery of the Mourning alive.
At least, that would please me in its non-accomplishment. I like mysteries that don't get solved ~

As far as the Mournland goes pretty much anything is game, just try not to get too ridiculous with it.

As far as what your group can find in there that's also for the most part a blank slate. You have the main workshop of House Cannith in Metrol, at least one or two other dragonmarked houses, a House Kundarak vault (doesn't need to be the main one to have some decent stuff in there), as well as what the nobles left in their houses as they fled.

I know you're looking for specific directions to help your adventure, however the very nature of the Mournland is mystery. How did it happen? What's in there now? What was left behind? It can be a pain but it can also be interesting as well.

Orien teleportation, and your banks can teleport goods between them location becomes less important.
the problem with teleportation and the kundarak vaults is that if commonly used, teleportation would remove the need to have more than one vault at all--everything would be deposited at a kundarak branch and then teleported to Mror. There would be only a single 'Vault' and not the dozens that are described in the rule books. It would make a lot more sense to do it that way--if the teleportation were widely used.

The way I see it, it's not widely used. Why? Maybe there's a cost associated with it that's not written into the books. I dunno. But it makes the world less interesting, imho.

I'm not arguing with you that in your campaign the Mror Vault is the biggest one. I don't like that in MY campaign, so it's in the Mournland.

Problem? It's not a problem. It only works with small objects and there is still only so much room in a single vault. Also I'm sure there are different levels of service. Where the very rich
can get the premium service with all the bells and whistles middle class people probably make do with services at the level of a standard bank.

The way I see it, it's not widely used. Why? Maybe there's a cost associated with it that's not written into the books. I dunno. But it makes the world less interesting, imho.
There definitely is a cost associated with it but I thought we were talking about the BEST stuff. Maybe we have different ideas on best but I would also consider that to be the most valuable stuff. And as the most valuable stuff cost is probably not such an issue for the owner.

I'm not arguing with you that in your campaign the Mror Vault is the biggest one. I don't like that in MY campaign, so it's in the Mournland.
Which is fine. You can do whatever you like but when a poster asks for stuff from the Mournland to present to his DM you should make it clear what's official and what is just your adventure idea. Though personally I think the Mournland has more than enough treasure in it to entice people. You don't need to add more nonsensical stuff to make it worth it.

wow. you need to chill.

first, i wrote that perhaps their greatest vaults were in cyre. moreover, the argument that MAYBE the biggest vaults would be where the richest, most talented, most creative people in Galifar are. It's just a possibility--you know... like why the big banks are in New York, Tokyo, London... where the rich people are.

the mror vaults, and most everything else ARE mentioned in the present tense, after all....

as for 'service' arguments, those don't make sense either. after all, it's going to be cheaper to just teleport something to the main vault than go through the bother of building, staffing, and warding the heck out of every vault in the continent.

LOL Which came first? The rich people or the financial market? There's not really a right answer to that. They grow together obviously. It's not first one then the other. But the Dwarves grew in the Mror Holds and are very rich. Cyre was hardly the only nation to have great wealth. And the stereotype of Cyre was a CULTURAL and artistic center not an economic/financial one.

If we followed your logic the Union Bank of Switzerland would be in the US instead of Switzerland. The Dwarves of Kundarak do have national pride and there are plenty of very rich, influential individuals in the Mror Holds.

the mror vaults, and most everything else ARE mentioned in the present tense, after all....
What in the world is your point? Most everythings mentioned in the present tense when it is the present.

as for 'service' arguments, those don't make sense either. after all, it's going to be cheaper to just teleport something to the main vault than go through the bother of building, staffing, and warding the heck out of every vault in the continent.
Is it? I see nothing to back up your claim. Magic items are a LOT of money. Since it's powered by the Kundarak Dragonmark that takes a dragonmarked individual's time. Also very expensive. Then there's large items they can't teleport. Then you're forgetting you still need a branch out there to teleport it to. And if you've got a branch out there that can receive valuables it needs to be protected. And once that happens why shouldn't you start providing services to the middle class that could use a bank but don't need/can't afford the same things as a Nobleman?

Then there's the letters of credit and the materials to make them they must keep safe and secure. What's this all add up to? A vault.

You do know we have things like wire transfers and lines of credit, debit cards etc. now right? So why do we not follow some sort of wacky single bank theory like you propose? Think about it.

treasure: one of my goals is to find a darrens instant fortress, an item noone in eberon has the cl to make...

Airships have a CL > 13, so go ask House Cannith for an Instant Fortress.

King Kaius' unnamed court mage casts Mind Blank on him every day. He should be able to create an Instant Fortress as well.

There ARE high level pc class characters in Eberron, they are just not mentioned explicitly. ;-)

But more on topic - places to search.
- House Sivis installations: Perhaps someone tried to mail the reason for the Mourning. Bit mundane, but hey, still possible.
- All sites where Cyre's or one of the invading armies died. Loot to last you to the next age.
- Libraries. As the most advanced nation, Cyre probably had some very impressive academic knowledge. Steal it.

Ways to survive:
- Don't travel on the ground. Flying mounts (Nightmare Skeletons being something of bargain there), Wind Walking (Planar Binding: Genie), Carpet of Flying etc.
- Always have Rope Trick prepared. Inside, you can heal (magically or naturally).
- Get yourself some Kind of Construct or Undead as a hp sponge. Both types can be healed by a wizard, even in the Mournland.

King Kaius' unnamed court mage casts Mind Blank on him every day.
He does? I'd assume it to be some kind of item... Oh, well.

However, it's highly probably House Cannith (and possibly some others) have found a way to combine caster levels to build items (I'd assume according to a formula of sqrt{sum[square(individual CL)]}, cause this way, you'd still be needing about eleven level3 magewrights to just get to a CL 10, making high level characters still stand out).

Back to topic: Yes, it's somewhat probable House Kundarak will have some goods in their vaults. It's unclear whether their teleporting network works for goods that are heavier than 10 lbs (doesn't say you can simply buy several vaults to stack the weights).

So the most important locales would probably be the Cannith Headquarters and Metrol, the capitol of Cyre.

If we followed your logic the Union Bank of Switzerland would be in the US instead of Switzerland. The Dwarves of Kundarak do have national pride and there are plenty of very rich, influential individuals in the Mror Holds.

The flaw in that logic is that not every rich person in the US puts their money in Switzerland. A lot of people prefer keeping their wealth in a secure area within close proximity, so they can have access to it at any time without having to deal with international market concerns.

Likewise, I can definetly believe a lot of Cyran notables preferred keeping their wealth and personal items in a nearby House Kundarak vault facility, rather then having to take a trip to the Mror Holds everytime they wanted to take a look at the priceless family heirlooms. Even with Lightning Rails and Airships, it's a long way to go between Cyre and the Mror Holds, and wealthy nobles have better things to do with their time.

Remember, Conveniance is just as important for financial institutions as Security.

Could you please know what you're talking about before you speak?
1) You are completely misunderstanding the context in which the Union Bank of Switzerland was brought up. Re-read it. I brought it up to explain why Kundarak might have their best banks/vault in the Mror Holds and not Cyre. It had nothing to do with the idea EVERYTHING would be stored there which I never claimed anyways.

2) Kundarak has safety deposit boxes with limited teleportation abilities so you can access your items from any vault. So you can store them in "Switzerland" but still go to your nearest branch and pick up your priceless family heirloom. I mentioned them in addition to airships and the rail.

3) Nobles have better things to do than make sure they're priceless family heirlooms have the best protection they can afford? When you own a 100 million dollar work of art you put up with alarm codes, fingerprint scanners security guards etc. even though yes it can be a hassle but what would the hassle be if you lost it? Because the important thing is never losing that irreplaceable object. Convenience takes a backseat to security unless you're a fool. And a fool and his money are soon parted.

PS> While not all rich people have their wealth in Switzerland they will have their money in places like Swiss banks spread wirelessly throughout financial institutions/markets. Of course this has nothing to do with anything. It's just the purpose letters of credit serve so I don't know why you brought it up or thought it was a "flaw."

Allow me to clarify my point. Simply put, if House Kundarak can guarantee the security of it's Cyran Vaults, why go to all the trouble to ship Mum's old Jewelry to the Mror Holds for safe keeping, if you can have both the security of a Kundarak Vault and the conveniance of being able to go down to your Friendly Local Kundarak Bank to withdraw a few of those jewels to pawn off to pay those pesky gambling debts?

Sure, if you really want to, you could get the Mror Hold Vaults with conveniant Teleport Access, but that'll cost Extra. A lot Extra. Them teleport runes aren't cheap, y'know.

As for the "Nobles have better things to do than make sure they're priceless family heirlooms have the best protection they can afford?" thing, the answer is, usually, Yes. Some have Demenes to run; others have military careers; yet others will be busy spending away their inheritance in frivolous pleasures.

Don't get me wrong, though. Sure, the smart and careful ones will have secured their most treasured items in the Vaults of Kundarakhold for that extra level of security.

But nobody ever said one needed to be smart or careful to be a noble, did they?

We are talking about people that can afford them obviously. If you have some magical amulet worth 100k gp you can probably afford the works when it comes to security.

As for the "Nobles have better things to do than make sure they're priceless family heirlooms have the best protection they can afford?" thing, the answer is, usually, Yes. You continue to make zero sense.
1) You seem to be confusing hard and liquid assets. If a rich person wants to fritter away all their money they can do it with letters of credit. They don't need the actual coinage to be in a nearby vault. It can be on the other side of Khorvaire and they can go to any Kundarak bank and get letters of credit.
2) Only an idiot let's mild convenience trump security. If you own some sort of magical one of a kind artifact that for whatever reason you want locked away you pay for protection that is up to the task of guarding something like that.
3) Your examples of what they would be doing instead are asinine and obviously would not preclude anyone from having their goods stored in any vault they'd like. Such people will use the Kundarak teleportation for quick and easy access to their goods. It will still require them actually going to the bank. Whether that is where the item is actually stored or if that is where it is being teleported.

Don't get me wrong, though. Sure, the smart and careful ones will have secured their most treasured items in the Vaults of Kundarakhold for that extra level of security.
:waits: Which is exactly what I said from the very beginning. The BEST stuff is in Kundarakhold. Absolutely agree. Again I have to ask WHAT are you arguing?

But nobody ever said one needed to be smart or careful to be a noble, did they?
If you want to STAY a rich noble. Yes you do need to. Or someone smart enough to handle your affairs. Parents, lawyers, whatever.

Well what's your point? This whole argument got started over whether or not any nobles would use vaults within Cyre over vaults in Kundarakhold. I've been coming up with reasons why some Cyran nobles would favor vaults closer to home, and you just keep taking down my arguments.

Ok, yes, the smarter Cyran nobles will have kept their prize possessions in Kundarakhold.

But I'm just saying, if you want a good excuse for sending an adventuring party into the Mournlands because someone in New Cyre is paying good money to retrieve a valuable (or sentimental) heirloom from their old family vault in the old Kundarak banking house in Metrol, there's no reason why you can't do that.

THAT's what I'm trying to say.

And I agree. Any Kundarak vault is worth knocking over and has valuables galore.

You know, Kundarak's greatest vaults may very well be in the Mror Holds... but those vaults are secured and guarded by the world's premiere security agency. If you want to find Kundarak's greatest lootable vaults, then Cyre is definitely the place. :D

As for what else you might find in the Mournland: expect freakish encounters in abundance. Trees with bark made of human flesh, houses that get smaller as you get closer to them, your dead uncle's voice calling from beyond the fog, half-petrified people still standing on the streets, dead babies possessed by unnatural forces crawling across the ceiling... If it could happen in a Stephen King novel* or a decent horror movie, it's probably happening right now in the Mournland.
