Hello

Has anyone seen or read anything that would identify where to place the Cyran city of Saerun, I think its suppossed to be somewhere near the Field of Ruins, but there is nothing specific that I have been able to find.

Thanks

Where is Saerun ?In the Sorgotten Realms, of course. :P
Sorry, couldn't help myself. It was just sitting there like the pension fund.

Anywho, I don't recall that one, where did you hear about it? Was it in the ECS?

I was thinking the same thing, Edymnion. Same thing...

The only mention of the name that I can remember is in Forge of War, the part about 994 and the battles before the Mourning. It mentions that the troops of Breland and Thrane, on their way to Making, "cut the Saerun Road", and refers to the battle of the Field of Ruins by the alternative name of "battle on the Saerun Road".

I haven't heard the name anywhere else, either, so my tendency would be to just assume that it's the name of the road, rather than any location. Maybe it's named like the Roman roads, and Saerun may have been the name of the guy who built it?

Yeah, in that case, my first reaction would be that Saerun was the name of the area the road travelled through, like "The Plains of Saerun" or "The Saerun Hills", since its fairly rare to name a road between two cities after only one of the cities.

It could also be a major trading road, with the name Saerun being a corruption of Sea-run, as in a road that was as fast to travel (relatively speaking) as taking a ship would have been.

Honestly, the way some of the other parts of the FoW background stuff was written, I'm inclined to believe that the real answer is that the writer just completely made it up out of the blue, and that it doesn't really mean anything. They just needed to come up with another name for a battle, and thats the first thing they thought of.

Must have been looking around the room for inspiration, and saw a Forgotten Realms book on the shelf. "Hey yeah, run sounds like a road, but can't call it Faerun... I know, I'll make it Saerun and no one will ever notice! Ha, I'm brilliant... *type type type*". ;)

Quoted for truth.

Otherwise, I assumed Saerun was somewhere southwest of Making, since it looks like that was where those armies were heading. About halfway between the Brelish border and Making was what I guessed.

It was mentioned in Tales of the Last War, Saerun is the city protected by the amnesiac wizard.

Additionally in FoW on page 25 under year 942, The Saerun Pike is listed as a unit (and, it appears) most of the units are named for their home city, and on page 27 under years 947-952, the Lords of Saerun and Making are hiring mercenaries.

There are a couple more references I think, but the location of the city is vague.

It still happens, like when the namers are from the other city and assume people will know you're traveling from there ("All roads lead to Rome") or, conversely, when the named city is considered important and the other end of the road isn't anywhere in particular, just a last stop along a series of decreasingly important stops.

Great catch, BTW. Guess it does have a context.

Heh... being a big fan of the Mournland (and the Dreaming Dark, and the Lords of Dust, and...) I have an idea...

How about we add yet another community project?

Creating the CURRENT Saerun, ruins and all?

Obviously Marked for Death Series would be a good inspiration for the Mournland and Tales of the Last War would help a lot with the specific city.

Of course, being flighty as I am, it's probably a bad idea if you think about it. I don't think.
